AIM :—
To find refractive index of different liquids ( Water, Glycerin and
Benzene) using a concave mirror.

APPARATUS REQUIRED:—
A concave mirror, A clamp stand, One optical needle, plumb line, meter
scale and all three liquids namely water, benzene and glycerin.

PRINCIPLE:—
When the optical needle is at the center of curvature of the concave
mirror, it’s image is formed at the same place (as rays fall normally on
the mirror) .
When liquid is spread over the concave side of the mirror, rays suffer
refraction before hitting the mirror normally. Reflected rays retrace
their path and meet principle axis at C/, we need to move optical needle
little downwards to remove the parallax.
The refractive index of the mirror is given by
µ = (PC/PC/)

Procedure

1. Find rough focal length of the given concave mirror (say f).
2. Now place optical needle at around 2f and remove it’s parallax
with image and record distance PC.
3. Now spread some water over the concave side and lower the
optical needle to remove the parallax. Record distance PC/.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for other liquids as well.
5. Take minimum three readings for each liquid.

Observations:—
For Water

Distance PC in cm Distance PC/ in cm µ = PC/PC/

21.0 cm 16.2 cm 1.30
21.2 cm 16.0 cm 1.32
21.2 cm 16.0 cm 1.32
Average value µ = 1.31
For Glycerin

Distance PC in cm Distance PC/ in cm µ = PC/PC/

21.0 cm 15.2 cm 1.38
21.2 cm 15.0 cm 1.41
21.2 cm 15.4 cm 1.38
Average value µ = 1.39
For Benzene

Distance PC in cm Distance PC/ in cm µ = PC/PC/

21.0 cm 14.5 cm 1.44
21.2 cm 14.6 cm 1.47
21.2 cm 14.4 cm 1.47
Average value µ = 1.46

Calculations:—

Result:—
From the above investigation, it has been found that
the refractive index of different liquids at 34° C are as
follows
µwater = 1.31
µglycerin = 1.39
µbenzene = 1.46
