(mention officials present) , Distinguished student of ____________ University, Ladies and
Gentlemen.

I would like to say thank you very much indeed for invited us, Indonesia Defense University,
to ___________ University. My name is Colonel Dr. IDK Kerta Widana, SKM, MKKK and I’m
here stand in front of you all as a representative of Indonesia Defense University to presenting
the overview about Indonesia Defense University. And I Hope I will also be able to well
demonstrate about Indonesia Defense University as well as Post Graduate Program of
Disaster Management.

The outline of this presentation are Introduction, IDU Profile, Faculty of National Security
Profile, Disaster Management Program consist of the history, accreditation, organization and
so on, Research and publications and also the Community Service.

Nowadays, there are threat changes from military threats in to nonmilitary threats globally.
After the world war II, military invasion, open war, colonization and other forms of mass
weapon used are strictly regulated under the Geneva Convention. It makes the military
threats shifted to nonmilitary threats such as terrorism, drug use, cyber war, economic war,
disaster and many more. Responding to the change, the Government of Indonesia realize
there is an urgent need to establish a university that focused on defense. The 6 th President
of the Republic of Indonesia, Gen (Ret) Prof. Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono or widely known
as SBY officially inaugurated the Indonesia Defense University (IDU) on March 11 th 2009 with
the motto of this university “Identity, Nationalism, Integrity”.
The students of Indonesia Defense University comes from various background they are
military, police, and civilians. IDU educates the students to think comprehensively and
strategically on defense issue (military and nonmilitary issue) locally, regionally, and
internationally.

Ladies and Gentlemen: with ethos, dedication, and hard work by all IDU academians only
within 8 years in 2017 IDU has been awarded “A” accreditation by BAN PT (National
Accreditation Board-Higher Education) and have 4 major faculties such as :
- Faculty of Defense Strategic
- Faculty of Defense Management
- Faculty of National Security
- Faculty of Defense Technology

I’m going to continue this presentation by explaining the Faculty of National Security.
This faculty led by RADM TNI Dr. Siswo Hadi Sumantri and Dean and FADM TNI Dr. Adnan
Madjid as Vice-Dean. The Faculty of National Security itself established in 2016 based on
increasing need of defense policy analysis facing the dynamics change of threats to national
security. This Faculty has three study program, they are Peace and Conflict Resolution Studies,
Disaster Management Studies and Maritime Security Studies. These are contribute to
maintain the nation’s existence as well as the national security. When disaster occurred, the
Government/local government usually unable to operate normally and it has an impact to
national security.

Focus to the Disaster Management Studies, the purpose of this program is to produce Masters
of Defense who are capable of designing and implementing policies on disaster management
and their relation to strategic environment development, as well as competent in acting as
defense analysts, academics, and practitioners for the welfare of the people.

The Vision of this program is to achieve Disaster Management Studies which excels in
national, regional, and international level as world class university for developing the defense
science in the field of Disaster Management by 2024.

The mission of this program as shown on the screen;
• To carry out academic education on disaster management based on modern learning
technology with foundation of integrity, nationalism, and national identity.
• To educate professional future leader from both military and civilians in the field of
disaster management by producing graduates with adaptive capabilities towards
global strategic environment development.
• To conduct quality and innovative research for theory development and learning
practice in the field of Disaster Management for National Security.
• To conduct and improve community service as academics’ awareness in form of
training, mentoring, counseling, and other forms relevant to the field of disaster
management.
• To improve professionalism of lecturers and educators and their competitiveness in
the field of disaster management.
• To develop adequate learning facilities and infrastructures in order to actualize an
excellent service.
• To establish professional cooperation with government institution, private sector,
local community, and the people in local, regional, national, and international level
which support Three Pillars of Higher Education comprising of Education, Research,
and Community Service

The accreditation of Disaster Management Studies is A, and valid until November 14th, 2022.
This shows that the learning process at IDU is quite competent and has a good quality.

Shown on the slide, the Organizational Structure of Faculty of National Security. Me, myself
acting as the head department of Disaster Management Studies.

A great learning process must be supported with good facilities both for student, lecturers
and staff. The dining hall, where our students carry out their breakfast, lunch, and dinner
serve best quality and healthy food. We also have place to rest and calming the mind when
we got tired called joglo. The health of our students become our concern, we provide the
tennis and volley field as well as

fitness equipment and room. The academic activity supported with a comfortable classroom
and library (equipped with national and international book).

We also have an Auditorium with capacity 500 persons, in this room we conduct seminars by
inviting local and foreign speakers around the world (for example, we invited Ministry of
Defense, Ministry of Higher Education, Professor Keiko from Ministry of Public Works Japan,
Professor Heather S. Gregg from Naval Base Defense Analysis US, Professor Ong Keng Yong
from Rajaratnam School Singapore and many more).

To achieve the vision of IDU to become a world class defense university in 2024, IDU conduct
a collaboration and mutual cooperation with national universities in Indonesia such as
Universitas Indonesia, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh November, Universitas Mulawarman,
Universitas Padjajaran, Universitas Cendrawasih, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Institut
Teknologi Bandung, Universitas Sam Ratulangi SLIDE 15 as well as national institution such as
BNPB (National Disaster Management Agency), BIG (Geospatial Information Agency),
Pertamina (National Oil Companies), Indonesian National Armed Forces Staff Colleges, Air
Staff College, Naval Staff College, Army Staff College, Bank Artha Graha, Local Government
(Special Capital Region of Jakarta, South Kalimantan, East Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan).
SLIDE 16 We also make collaboration with international universities in research such as Naval
Postgraduate School, Norwich University, Australian Defence Force Cadets, US Defence
University, Giessen University, Singhua University, Defence Academy of UK, RSIS, Nanyang
Technology University, China Defence University.

IDU conduct an annually international scientific seminar named Indonesia International
Defense Science Seminar and it’s our 2nd year conducting this seminar. The seminar attended
by 1200 participants around the world. The theme of this year is “Strengthening Defense
Diplomacy to Address Common Security Challenges”.

Of course we are taking serious about disaster in this seminar. One of the sub topic of the
seminar was “Sharing Best Practices and Strategies in Disaster Relief”, we talk about Internal
Displacement Crisis Management Over Rakhine State, The Impact of Sea Level Rise and
Climate Change on Island Nations, the SUUAVE Project, and The Satellite Technology to
Support Disaster Relief Management.

To have a better understanding in terms of disaster management, IDU conduct Local Study
Visit and Overseas Study Visit for every students. This year we visited Palembang, South
Sumatra (together with Jakarta become host city of Asian Games 8-8-18) in this area, forest,
land and wildfire often occur. This study visit aims to enrich students’ knowledge and its
implementation in real life with hands-on experience, directly from the affected areas and
communities. Not only that, the student’s conduct a research on a certain issue and involving
all stakeholders. In this visit, the student engage in dialogue with local governments, affected
communities, DRR actors and practitioners, private sectors, military, police.

For Overseas Study Visit we visited Japan (leading country in disaster risk reduction) this year.
This study visit aims to enrich the student’s knowledge on disaster management at
international level. IDU wants to produce graduates with excellent quality, expertise, and
necessary ability on disaster management which suitable with ever-changing development of
strategic environment. Each study visit has its own topic and different countries to visit. The
students are expected to analyse the implementation of disaster management practice in the
host countries and what lesson that could be learned for Indonesia. In order to do so, the
students conduct throrough research which involves all stakeholders such as with
governments, host countries’ DM agency, affected communities, DRR actors and
practitioners, private sectors, military, police.

IDU has an academic journal named Jurnal Pertahanan. Jurnal Pertahanan publishes
scientific work of military, academics and observers in the common defense strategy and
defense management. The Journal's primary objective is to bridge the gap between theory
and practice in defense studies. Every article contains empirical results, research methods,
managerial implication and latest references from primary sources. The Journal is highly
relevant to all professionals, directors, managers, entrepreneurs, professors, academic
researchers and graduate students in the field of international defense strategy studies.

Disaster Management Study Program has produced 229 graduates which composed of 10%
military officer, 30% government official, and 20% employee of private sector, and 60%
students. Most of the graduates are now working for ministries, national institutions, local
governments, international NGOs, consultant agencies, universities, and many more.

Ladies and Gentlemen: Every higher education in Indonesia must implement a national vision
in higher education called “Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi” next I will call it Tri Dharma. Tri
Dharma consist of 3 points ; (1) education and teaching (2) research and development (3)
community service.
I have explained well 2 points ahead (education and teaching & research and development)
before. The last is community service. IDU conduct several community services, they are
- Basic Disaster Management Training for communities, local youth and students ;
- Disaster vulnerability mapping;
- Installation of evacuation signs, route signs;
- Structural and non-structural mitigation on disaster-prone areas;
- Volunteering in activity related to disaster management;
- Conducting social caring activity to affected communities;
- Tree-planting and reforestation on landslide-prone areas;
- Teaching State Defense (bela negara) and disaster-related materials to students.
