Green Ripper
Introduction
“Otso pa” is a song by the Filipino rock band, Grin Department. It was
released on 2001 as one of the double lead singles from their album 2nah ahgen,
along with “2 na” under the Vicor Music Corporation. Using the Psychoanalytic lens,
this analysis will show how the song presents its view towards the secret
unconscious desires or unconscious sexual desires of humans as basis to their
behavior. Textual evidences in regards with the sexual symbolism, hidden
motivation, and language shall be presented on the latter part of this paper.
Psychoanalytic
Psychoanalytic Criticism is a theory developed by Sigmund Freud where
concentration is placed on the unconscious life of individuals, however recent
conceptions of psychoanalysis see it as a way of 'decoding' the sexual symbolism of
literary texts in order to uncover the authors unconscious obsessions. Stevens and
Stewart (1996) stated that "Freud viewed literature as the fantasy projection of the
artist" and that if "fantasies exist in the unconscious of the artists, they also reside
in the unconscious of the audience"
Textual Evidences
At pagsapit ng Linggo
-Stanza I
In the first stanza, the persona is talking about having a ‘side line’ during
Sundays. This implies that this persona has needs that are needed to be taken care
of. He has this sort of ‘business’ during Sundays that lets him earn extra money.
-Stanza II
In the second stanza, the seller in the song stated that he will do things that
will satisfy his financial needs. Even though the main character in the song probably
has a job during Mondays to Saturdays, he is still in need of money. He is implying
that since he is a man, he will make use of the resources he has such as his body,
most especially his manhood. The persona thought of this idea that his manhood
can be a useful thing in order to gain money rather than just a part of his body that
is always hanged.
Sakit na isipin
Taas na ng bilihin
-Stanza IV
The fourth stanza means that due to the rapid increase in products that
people need, the persona is stating that in the ‘side line’ that he has, he will be
needing to reach something and get through it in order to gratified the need he
have. The word ‘makaraos’ is commonly referred to as the climax during a sexual
intercourse. This simply implies that the persona has somehow had this urge to
‘makaraos’ for him to earn money that will suffice his financial needs.
Nung una
Sa ah eh ih oh uh
-Stanza V
The fifth stanza gives more idea about what the persona is selling. Ah eh ih
oh uh are some kind of sounds or moans that are produced by persons who are
having sexual intercourse. These lyrics let us know that the persona is selling
something in relation with these sounds that are created during sexual intercourse.
Toothbrush and toothpaste are phallic symbols that are used in the song.
Toothbrush pertains to the male genitalia namely penis and toothpaste symbolizes
the one liquid produced by males which is the semen. This indicates that the
persona sold products with free toothbrush and toothpaste. The persona states that
in every product that he is selling there is a penis and semen included as freebies.
Shampoo day!
These lines in the song also represent the male and female genitalia. The
‘shampoo day’ line sounds like a term that is used for vagina. On the other hand,
ballpen and pentelpen are phallic symbols used to characterize the appearance that
the male genital organ looks like. Ballpen somehow symbolizes a thin penis
however the pentelpen symbolizes a bigger sized male organ.
At bibili ng meat
-Stanza XII
The 12th stanza made it clear on what the persona is trying to sell. The
‘meat’ in the lyrics refers to the male genital. The persona basically states that he is
selling male genital organ. Figuratively speaking, this selling of ‘meat’ in the song
can be categorized as prostitution as the persona is trading a person’s bosy for
sexual intercourse in exchange for money.
(Ngah!) At mahaba
-Stanza XIII
In this stanza, the persona is saying that the girl who ordered ‘meat’ prefers
to buy the meat that he has. The word ‘longganisa’ pertains to the male genital
organ and it is described in the lyrics that it is big, thick, and long. This stanza also
supports the 12th stanza that enables us to figure out the ‘product’ that the
persona is selling.
This line has a double meaning. It represents a man’s penis. “Oh tinda ko”
sounds like the bisayan words ‘otin’ that refers to the penis and ‘dako’ which means
big. When combined together, the meaning of this line is big penis.
Sinakyan ko na sya
We usually ride a car or some sort of vehicle but the persona rode a person.
Riding a person is referred to as the sexual intercourse itself. In these lines, the
persona had a sexual intercourse with the girl which happened to be his customer.
The persona rode the customer and vice versa.
Lastly, after the persona and the customer had a sexual intercourse, the
customer paid for the ‘product’. The line’ otso pa’ pertains to the amount of money
that the customer need to add for the product he got to get paid. However, the
term ‘otso pa’ sounds like an activity done to the male genital organ in order for the
persona to feel pleasure. Basically the persona is asking for the girl customer to
pleasure him so that the price of the product that the customer received will be
fully paid.
Conclusion
The song “Otso pa” is a great example of a piece that clearly conveys hidden
desires and gratification of needs. It is very evident in the song that ID dominated
the persona wherein he will do anything just to have the things that will give him
pleasure such as money and his daily commodities. He used his sexuality as a
material for his “side line”. Psychoanalytic approach is very evident throughout the
song due to the symbols and language applied in the lyrics.
