1. STAFF NURSE:

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION:

 General wards:
o 1:3 (hospital attached with school or college of nursing)

 ICU, ICCU and other specialty: 1:1 for 24 hours.
 Labour room: 4 in each shift
 Operation theatre: 3 for 24 hours per table
 Casualty and emergency: 1:1 in each shift

 And 30 percent leave reserve post of staff nurse should be maintained.

JOB SUMMARY:

 Staff nurse is a first level professional nurse who provides direct patient care.
 Assists in management of wards/units/special department.
 She/he is directly responsible to Senior Staff nurse/ward incharge/Nursing superintendent
grade II.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Direct patient care

 Carry out the procedure of admission and discharge of the patient,


 Makes bed for serious patients
 Maintains personal hygiene and comfort of the patient.
 Attends to the nutritional needs of the patient
 Maintains clean and safe environment for the patient
 Implements and maintains ward policies and routines.
 Takes rounds with the doctors.
 Performs various technical tasks related to nursing care.
 Administration of medication
 Assisting doctors in various medical and surgical diagnostic procedures.
 Performing simple diagnostic procedure.
 Collecting and sending of specimen for laboratory diagnostic procedure.
 Recording of vital signs
 Prepares patients for operations
 Observes all patients condition and takes suitable action accordingly .
 Gives expert bed side nursing to all patients.
 Attends last offices in case of a patient dying during shifts and arrange to
preserve dead body in mortuary, or hand over the body with respect to
concerned family members/relatives/authority.

2.Ward/ Unit management

 Helps the ward incharge to carry out his/her work during their absence.
 Maintains general cleanliness of the ward and sanitary annexure
 Supervises the duties of group D employees and guides them
 Writes the diet register and supervise the distribution of diet.
 Maintains scheduled poisonous drug register.
 Supervises nursing care and other tasks carried out by the students
 Maintains duty room trays, sterilizes instruments and see other procedural trays are in
readiness.
 Take over from the duty nurse of the previous, new and serious patients, instruments,
supplies, drugs, etc and handover the same accordingly.
 Maintains all the records pertaining to the ward/unit

3.Operation Theatre Management

o Maintains aseptic environment of the operation theatre.


o Autoclaving of articles, instruments, gloves, linen, etc required for various types of
surgery.
o Assists the surgeon and anesthetist in every step, skillfully while performing various types
of surgery.
o Maintains records and reports pertaining to the operation the theatre.
o Maintains safety of the boyle’s apparatus, oxygen cylinder, nitrogen cylinder, anesthetic
drugs, and autoclave etc in operation theatre.
4. Management of labour room

 Preparation of expectant mothers for aseptic safe delivery.


 Conducts normal deliveries and reports
 Attends and assist the doctors in all obstetric emergencies
 Attends and assists in difficult and abnormal deliveries
 Takes care of the newborn and premature babies
 Maintains record and reports pertaining to labour room
 Indent and procures necessary drugs, supplies linen etc to labour room.

5. Management of post operative/ ICU/Burns units:

 Indent and procurement of all the necessary equipments, drugs O2 cylinder, which are
required for the unit.
 Operates ECG, EEG, cardiac resuscitation

6. Psychiatric Unit

 Assists the doctor in admission and discharge of patients.


 Prepares patient for ECT and other procedures and therapies.
 Assists in management of aggressive, suicidal as grief and other symptoms of the patient
 Maintains records and reports of the unit.

7. Educational Function

 Helps in orientation of new staff and students.


 Carries out health teaching for individual or group of patients.
 Participates in in-service education programme
 Assists and extends cooperation in medical and nursing research programme.
 Provides for and demonstrates methods and procedures whenever needed.

2. SENIOR STAFF NURSE

EDUCATIONAL QULIFICATION:

 General: Pre university course/10 + 2 or equivalent exam.


 Professional: GNM/ B.Sc nursing
 Registration: Registered in INC/Karnataka nursing council.
 Experience: should have experience as staff nurse of not less than 5 years.

STANDARD NORMS:

 Since it is a first level nursing supervisory role which needs atleast one senior staff nurse for
five staff nurse(1:5)

JOB SUMMARY:

 Senior staff nurse is first level nursing supervisor who is accountable for nursing care
management of ward or a unit assigned to him/her.
 She is responsible for nursing superintendent GrII for his/her ward/unit management.
 She takes full charge of the ward and assigns work for various categories of nursing and non
nursing personnel working with him.her.
 She is responsible for safety and comfort of the patients in her/his work.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Direct patient care.

 Ensure proper admission, discharge of patients.


 Assist in the direct care of the patients.
 Plans nursing care and make patient assignment as per their nursing needs
 Ensure safety, comfort, and good personal hygiene of his/her patients.
 Assist in planning and administration of the therapeutic diet to his/ her patient.
 Makes rounds with doctors, assisting them in diagnostic and treatment of patients.
 Takes nursing rounds with staff and students.
 Assists patients and his/her relatives to adjust in the hospital and its routine.

2. Supervision and Administeration

 Acts as a liaison officer between ward staff and hospital administration


 Maintains good public relations in his/her ward.
 Makes duty and work assignment
 Maintains disciple among the personnel working in the particular ward.
 Deals appropriately with any adverse situation that occurs in the ward.
 Reports about any medico legal cases in the ward/unit.
 Writes and submits confidential reports of the staff.
 Ensures that students get desired learning experience in the ward.
 Assists in making ward requirement.
 Indenting and procurement of ward supplies and equipments and keeps records.

3.Educational Function

 Organizes orientation programme for new staff


 Organises formal and informal ward teaching, conducts bedside clinics and demonstration
etc.
 Conducts ward conferences/meetings.
 Gives incidental teaching to patient, relatives, staff nurse, students and to domestic staffs.
 Guides the formulation of nursing care studies, and nursing care plans etc.
 Evaluates the students performances and submits reports to the school authorities.

3. NURSING SUPERINDENDENT GRADE II

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION;
 General education : Pre university course/10 + 2 or equivalent exam.
 Professional: GNM/ B.Sc nursing
 Registration : registered in INC
 Experience: should have experience as senior staff nurse.

STANDARD NORMS:

 Since it is the second level nursing supervising role, it need at least the Nursing
supererintendent Gr II for three senior staff nurse (1:3)

JOB SUMMARY:

 She is responsible for developing and supervising nursing services of a department


 These units may be in patients wards, out-patient department clinics, operation theatres,
obstetric units, CSSD,
 She is responsible to the nursing superintendent GrII

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Patient care and ward/unit management

o Organizes and plans nursing care activities according to hospital policies and service
needs.
o Plans staffing pattern and the other necessary requirements of his/her department.
o Makes regular rounds of his/her department.
o Looks into general comport of the patient.
o Makes rotation plan for nursing staff and domestic staff
o Plans ward management with each ward/unit.
o Supervises the proper use and care of the equipment and supplies in department.
o Acts as a public relation officer of the unit and deals with the problems faced by the
ward supervisor, employees and patient attenders.
o Keeps the nursing superintendent Gr I and office informed of the needs of the nursing
units
o Officiates in the absence of nursing Superintendent Gr I.
2. Educational Function

o Arranges classes and clinical teaching of nursing students in the department related to
specialty experience.
o Implements the ward teaching programme and clinical experience of the students with
the help of doctors and nurses.
o Does councelling and guidance of staff and students.
o Arranges and conducts staff development programme
o Assists in planning for and participation in the training of auxillary personnel.

3. General:

o Escorts Nursing superintendent Gr I, Medical superintendent, and special visitors for


medical rounds,
o Arranges and participatesfor professional and social function of staff and students.
o Acts as a liaison officer between the nursing department and the higher hospital
authorities
o Carries out any other duties delegated by the nursing superintendent Gr I

4. NURSING SUPERINTENDENT GR I

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION :

 Registration : registerd in INC
 Experience: should have experience Nursing superintendent Gr II

STANDARD NORMS:

 There should be one Nursing superintendent Gr I for 200 bedded hospital, one Nursing
superintendent Gr I for 2-4 Nursing superintendent Gr II

JOB SUMMARY:
 Nursing superintendent is responsible for the medical superintendent in a hospital having 200
or above bed strength.
 She is accountable for the safe and efficient running of the various nursing departments in
the hospital.
 She is assistant in carrying out her duties by the deputy nursing superintendent/ assistant
nursing superintendent, ward supervisors and clerical, linen roomand domestic staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES.

1. Nursing services
 Participates in the formulation of philosophy of the hospital in general and those
specific to the nursing service.
 Determines the goals, aims, objectives and policies of nursing services
 Decides and recommends personnel and material requirement for running various
nursing services department of the hospital
 Interviews and recruits nursing staff.
 Takes hospital rounds with medical superintendent
 Makes regular visit in hospitals and wards
 Selects and secure proper equipment needed for the hospital

In Respect Of Nursing Administration, Management and Supervision


1. She will participate in the formulation of the philosophy of the hospital specific to the nursing
services.

2. She will formulate goals and objectives and participate in formation of policies of the nursing services
of the concern hospital.

3. She will implement hospital policies and rules for better health services to the patients.

4. She will make plan for placement of nursing staff including sister-in-charge, staff nurse, students in
different units, their rotation plan, and maintain a satisfactory schedule.

5. She will recommend personnel requirement and material requirements.

6. She will review the census and daily reports of hospital and report to the higher authority accordingly.

7. She will make regular hospital round individually and with Hospital Superintendent as well as with
various hospital committees to ensure the quality of patient care services.

8. She will responsible for making nursing audit and take necessary action accordingly.

9. She will supervise various stocks of wards for keeping the stock position up to- date with the help of
Dy. Nursing Superintendent and sister- in-charge.

10. She will take initiative and participate actively in condemnation of articles of the hospital.

11. She shall be responsible to ensure issuance of show cause notice to all nurses remaining on
unauthorized absent and long absent and disobey the authority.

12. She will prepare ACR I OPR of all nursing staff working under her regularly and forward to the
Nursing Directorate when ever asked for.

13. She will be responsible to prepare working statement of all nursing personnel and co-ordinate with
hospital authority.

14. She will maintain various record registers such as cumulative record, leave record, attendance
register, explanation letter file, grievance file of nursing services, performance appraisal, health record,

15. She will take action of all disciplinary problems when her Dy. Nursing Superintendent or other
subordinate staff in difficult to handle.

In Respect Of Making Liaison

1. She will foe a member of various Hospital Committees like Diet Committee, Purchases Committee,
Disaster Management Committee, Infection control Committee, Rogi Kalyan Samity, Condemnation
Committee, Enquiry Committee, College Council Committee, Quarter Committee etc and participate in
all developmental planning for the hospital.

2. She will keep communication with the head of the institution, Nursing Directorate, College off
Nursing if any and other category of Staff for smooth hospital management.

3. She will maintain inter departmental communication & act as a liaison officer between Bio-waste
management System operator, Rogi Sahayak Kendra, Diet contractor, Linen contractor etc to run the
hospital smoothly.

4. She will hold periodical meeting with the hospital administrators and nursing staff to make the
nursing administration effective.

In Respect Of Patient Care

1. She will observe and take active part for maintaining cleanliness of the wards, with the help of ward
master, Asst. Superintendent, Deputy Nursing Superintendent and Ward sister.

2. She will enquire regarding presence of Gr. D, presence of nurses, light & ventilation, any sound
pollution, safety security of the patient, fire extinguisher, presence of security personnel etc. during her
every day round.

3. She will formulate the standard protocol, enforce for implementation of the standard by encouraging
the unit in charge to supervise the maintenance of developed standard, review the standard periodically
for quality patient care and maintaining clean, orderly and safe environment.

4. She will ensure regular supply of articles and equipments for proper nursing care to the patients and
be vigilant about proper utilization of hospital properties.

5. She will initiate and encourage the staff to implement the modern technology for the patient care.
6. She will supervise the maintenance of various records such as admission register, discharge register,
Log Book, Hospital Report and Census, various nurses notes, TPR Chart, intake & output chart etc. of
the unit.

7. She will check and ensure the proper patient’s diet as a member of diet committee and also to visit the
hospital kitchen periodically.

8. She will supervise the waste management, infection control and safety measures (Universal/Standard
precaution) of the hospital.

In Respect Of Staff Development And Welfare Of The Nursing Staff

1. She will be responsible to plan, organize, conduct and actively participate in in-service and continuing
education programme like -

Orientation & induction programme of newly posted staff .Participate in seminars workshops directly.
Select the participants for any workshop and keep records up to-date. Encourage the nursing personnel
to go for higher studies.

2. She will counsel the subordinate staff in problem and provide guidance.

3. She should ensure the comfortable physical facilities of the nursing staff in wards and guide them as
far as practicable.

4. She will ensure periodical health check up of all nursing personnel, working in the hospital, maintain
health records and take action for sick nurses.

5. She will arrange nurses’ sick room in the hospital for the sick nurses.

6. She shall encourage recreational programme for nurses and actively participate in all recreational,
social and professional activities.

7. She will visit the nurses’ hostel periodically for smooth running the hostel & mess.

8. She will submit proposal for expansion and construction of nurses hostel as and when necessary.

9. She will ensure that all nursing staff are in tidy, clean uniform and maintain professional etiquette.

JOB SUMMARY

 Principal is responsible to the medical superintendent or district surgeon of the


hospital .
 Once the financial control of the school is handed to the principal. He or she is shall
be directly responsible to the directorate of medical education and directorate of
health and family welfare services.
 As the head of the school he/she will be responsible to the smooth
implementation of the INC syllabus and school administration .

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1, Administration

 Advertising and calling for candidates for nursing programme


 Scrutinizing applications, preparing merit list and calling them for interview.
 Conducting interview for selecting candidates
 Planning for orientation programme for new students and staffs
 Maintaining student records, admission register, results, registers master roll call for staff
teachers and students etc.
 Seeing the supply of audio visual aids, teaching materials as requested by the concerned
authorities of the department
 Placing indents with the government for stationary, uniform for certain category of class IV
servants
 Working out the philosophy and objectives of the institution
 Representing the college and the profession on various committees
 Holding meeting with teachers, staff offline, hostel staffs, students and their commities
 Writing annually the confidential report of staff and teachers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Administration
 Planning
 Develops philosophy and objectives for educational programme
 Identifies the present needs related to educational programme
 Investigates, evaluates and secures resources
 Selects and formulates learning experiences

2. Organizing
 Determines the number of position and scope and responsibility of each faculty and staff
 Analyses the job to be done in terms of needs of education programme
 Prepares the job description, indicate line of authority, responsibility in the relationship
and channels of communication by means of organizational charts and other methods
 Maintains plan of work load among staff members

3. Directing
 Recommends appointment and promotion based on qualification and experience of the
individual staff, scope of job and total staff composition
 Guides and encourages staff members in their job activities
 Promotes staff participation in research
 Procures and maintains physical facilities which are of standard
 Provides freedom for staff to develop active training course within the framework of
curriculum

4. Co-ordinating
 Co-ordinates activities relating to the programmes such as regular meetings, time schedule.
Maintain effective communication
 Initiates ways of co-operation
 Interprets nursing education to other related disciples and to the public

5. Controlling
 Provides for continuous follow up and revision of education programme
 Maintains recognition of the educational programme by accrediting bodies, university etc,
KNC, INC etc
 Maintains a comprehensive system of records
 Prepares periodic reports which reviews the progress and problem of the entire programme
 Prepares, secures approval of and administrates the budget

6. Instruction
 Plans for participation in educational programmes for further staff development
 Recognizes the need for continuous education for self and staff and provides stimulation of
opportunity for such development
 Participates as teacher in the educational programme

7. Guiding
 Provides for systematic guidance programme for staff members and students
 Encourages studies, research and writing for publication
 Provides and maintains a programme for recruitment, selection and promotion of students.

11. SENIOR ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF NURSING

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION

 General : As prescribed by staff nurse


 Professional: M.Sc Nursing/MN or equivalent degree in nursing recognized by INC or, B.Sc
Nursing or Post certificate degree in nursing recognized by any university
 Registration: Registered with state nursing council/INC
 Experience; Should have about 10 years experience in nursing service, of which 5 yrs in
administration and education

 Senior Assistant Director Of Nursing is at present rate, head of the nursing service under
Directorate of Health and Family welfare services, directly responsible to Directorate of
Health and Family welfare services and the director of medical education

 Deputation of B.Sc nursing, M.Sc Nursing in state or out of state and other training higher
learning progrmmes, two years or less to nursing personnel

12. PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE – DISRTICT FAMILY BUREAU

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATION

B.Sc degree in nursing from any university or institution or certificate in Public health nursing in any

Experience of working with rural communities

MEMBERSHIP
The PHN will be a member of the district health and family welfare team in the district health
organization and will enjoy the same status equivalent to that of the District Mass Education and
Information Officer

 JOB SUMMARY: She will work in collaboration with other functionaries in the District Family
Welfare Bureau like the mass media and the Extension Officer, Health education Officer,
Statistical Officer.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 To help in organization of Maternal and Child Health Programme as a whole in the


implementation of the special plan scheme, centrally sponsored and otherwise in
particular like the Immunization programme, training of traditional birth attendants (Dai )
and their other active involvement in MCH/FP work , prophylaxis against nutritional
deficiency disease etc.
 To promote health and nutrition education activities through the Lady Health Visitors,
Auxiliary Nurse Midwife by providing them with “taking points” and printed materials
produced by various agencies
 To help in developing school health programme in the district
 To ensure regular supply of equipments, records, registers, drugs, vaccines and other
sundries necessary for MCH work in PHC and subcentres
 To review the periodical progress reports on MCH/FP work done by the LHVs/ ANMs,
female, multipurpose workers etc, and put to the District Medical Officer/ District Family
Welfare Officer the point requiring attention and further action
 To provide for continuing education of the female MCH/FP /Functionaries in the district
through short in-service training service
