 Use of drones strictly
prohibited near wildfires
BC Wildfire Service staff were forced to temporar-
ily halt air operations on the Wilson Creek wildfire on
Sunday, July 22 due to people operating unmanned aerial
vehicles (UAVs, or “drones”) above the fire.
A helicopter that was supporting ground crews was
grounded. Additional firefighting aircraft working on
other fires in the area had to be diverted from their flight
paths to avoid the airspace around Little Wilson Lake
area, which is about 19 kilometres east of Nakusp.
The airspace around Little Wilson Lake is once again clear
for firefighting aircraft to operate. The RCMP is working
with the BC Wildfire Service to investigate this incident.
The use of drones near a wildfire is illegal. The restricted
airspace includes a radius of five nautical miles around
the fire and to an altitude of 3,000 feet above ground level.
The presence of drones near an active wildfire can slow
down, or completely shut down, aerial firefighting efforts,
due to safety concerns. If a drone collides with firefight-
ing aircraft, the consequences could be deadly.
Under federal regulations, anyone caught operating a
drone within an active wildfire could be fined $25,000,
or jailed for up to 18 months. The use of UAVs or drones
near or on a wildfire is also considered to be ‘interference’
as defined in Section 56 of the provincial Wildfire Act.
Operators are subject to a violation ticket fine of $1,150.
If convicted, the operator could be fined up to $100,000
and/or face imprisonment of over a year.

Help for caregivers to
live well with dementia
A conversation over coffee can help Balfour area families
living with dementia. The non-profit Alzheimer Society of
BC brings a Dementia Coffee & Questions session to the
community on Wednesday, August 15. The informal con-
versation about dementia can help caregivers with the chal-
lenges they face, offer reassurance and provide a sense of
connection.
Participants can meet others on a similar path, ask ques-
tions about dementia and caregiving, learn strategies to
try and hear about community resources. They’ll also get
some important reassurance that they are not alone on the
dementia journey.
Dementia Coffee & Questions runs from 10 am to 12
noon at Balfour Covenant Church, 7741 Upper Balfour

de Forest
March 15, 1925 - July 27, 2018
Born and raised by Harold and Nina de
Forest on a ranch near the Porcupine Hills
southwest of Claresholm Alberta, Ron was
initially home schooled, then attended
middle school in Granum, Alberta and
high school in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Ron’s first and primary career was that of
a ranch hand, working the family ranch
and later for neighbouring ranchers. In the fifties he got itchy feet
and did some touring via motorcycle in Canada and the US, eventually
homesteading near Pouce Coupe southeast of Dawson Creek BC. It was
the mid sixties when he discovered Cranbrook and the West Kootenays
and in 1971 found his home for the next 47 years in Kaslo.
In Kaslo Ron worked a variety of occupations including driving the
community bus from Nelson to Argenta return and working in the
sawmill. Much of his work was labour intensive; that combined with
running, cycling and weight training kept him very fit for most of his
life. Ron’s faith was important to him and for many years he was active
in the Nelson/Balfour Christian Science Church.
Some of Ron’s favourite things were: humour, sun (and lots of it),
his 82 Crown Victoria, green paint and duct tape.
Ron was predeceased by his parents, and siblings Barbara Watson,
Bernice Bernard, Gwen Schultz, and Cecile Hanna; and survived by
nieces Belle Parkinson of Vancouver, Grace Williams (Ed) Calgary and
nephew Norm Hanna of Red Deer.
A celebration of Ron’s life will be held on August 17th, Friday at St
Andrews United Church in Kaslo at 2:30 PM. In lieu of flowers please
donate to the charity of your choice or Ron’s favourite charity, the SPCA.

Are you eligible to vote in the October elections for One Mayor, Four Councillors and One School Trustee?
Is your name on the current list of electors?
If you are not sure you can find out by calling or visiting the Village of Kaslo at City Hall 413 4th St. 250 353 2311. The office is open from
8am to 12 Noon and from 1pm to 4pm, Monday to Friday (excluding holidays).
Advance elector registrations will be accepted at the Village of Kaslo office until 4:00 pm Tuesday, August 28, 2018. Except for registrations
on voting day, elector registrations will not be accepted during the period August 28, 2018 to October 20th, 2018.

ELECTOR QUALIFICATIONS
RESIDENT ELECTORS:
• 18 years of age or older on general voting day for the election or assent voting; and
• a Canadian citizen; and
• a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration; and
• a resident of the Village of Kaslo for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration; and
• not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or assent voting and not
otherwise disqualified by law.
NON-RESIDENT PROPERTY ELECTORS:
• 18 years of age older on general voting day for the election or assent voting; and
• a Canadian citizen; and
• a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration; and
• a registered owner of real property in the Village of Kaslo for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration; and
• the only persons who are registered owners of the property, either as joint tenants or tenants in common, are individuals who
are not holding the property in trust for a corporation or another trust; and
• not entitled to register as a resident elector; and
• not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or assent voting and not
otherwise disqualified by law; and
• if there is more than one registered owner of the property, only one of those individuals may, with the written
consent of the majority of the owners, register as a non-resident property elector.
LIST OF REGISTERED ELECTORS
Beginning Tuesday, September 4, 2018 until the close of general voting for the election on Saturday October 20th, 2018, a copy of the list
of registered electors will be available for public inspection, at the Village of Kaslo office at City Hall 413 4th St. during regular office hours,
Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays. Before inspecting the list, a person must sign a statement that they will not inspect the list
or use the information included in the list except for the purposes of Part 3 – Electors and Elections of the Local Government Act. An elector
may request that their address or other information about them be omitted from or obscured on the list of electors.
OBJECTION TO REGISTRATION OF AN ELECTOR
An objection to the registration of a person whose name appears on the list of registered electors may be made in accordance with the
Local Government Act until 4:00 pm on Friday, September 14, 2018. An objection must be in writing and may only be made by a person
entitled to be registered as an elector of the Village of Kaslo and can only be made on the basis that a person whose name appears on the
list of electors has died or that a person whose name appears on the list of electors is not qualified to be registered as an elector of the
