Problem 4. Determine the location(s) to place a uniform live load to cause the maximum reaction at
Support 2.
Draw the shape of the influence line by applying a unit vertical displacement at Support2.

Therefore, apply loads to Spans 1 and 2 to cause max. reaction at Support 2.

Problem 5. Determine the location(s) to place a uniform live load to cause the maximum shear at 2.
Draw the shape of the influence line by applying a unit vertical relative displacement near Support 3.
There are four possibilities, all shown below, depending on whether you apply a positive or negative
shear displacement (positive for shear influence diagrams is left side down, right side up) or cut the
beam just to the left of Support 3 or just to the right of Support 3. Note that all four influence diagrams
point to the same span loading pattern (load Spans 2 and 3) since designers do not distinguish between
positive shear and negative shear.

Problem 6. Determine the location(s) to place a uniform live load to cause the maximum moment at
the middle of Span 1.
The influence diagram is:
1rad
1 2 3 4
Therefore, load Spans 1 and 3 to cause maximum positive moment at middle of Span 1.

Problem 7. Determine the location(s) to place a uniform live load to cause the maximum moment at
Support 3.
The influence diagram is:
1rad
1 2 3 4
Therefore, load Spans 1 and 2 to cause maximum negative moment at Support 2.

Problem 8. Determine the load pattern to cause maximum moment at the middle of Span 2 on Level
2.
The influence diagram is:
Level 3
Level 2
1rad
And the span load pattern to cause max positive moment at the middle of Span 2 on Level 2 is therefore:
