Fiber optics, or optical fiber, refers to the medium and the technology associated with the
transmission of information as light pulses along a glass or plastic strand or fiber. A fiber optic
cable can contain a varying number of these glass fibers -- from a few up to a couple hundred.
Surrounding the glass fiber core is another glass layer called cladding. A layer known as a buffer
tube protects the cladding, and a jacket layer acts as the final protective layer for the individual
strand.
Optical fiber features low loss compared either to the metallic, balanced paired cable or coaxial
cable using copper.
Optical fiber can transmit signals at far higher frequencies than coaxial cable, although the
frequency range depends on the fiber type.
Optical fiber is narrower and lighter than other transmission media. Compared to 18-core coaxial
cable, for example, the 18-core optical cable is about 1/10 in sectional area and about 1/30 in
weight. Optical cable, when compared to conventional metallic cable with the same outside
diameter, can accommodate more conductors and is advantageous in terms of installation.
(4) Non-inductive
Since glass such as quartz does not conduct electricity, optical fiber is free of noise resulting
from electromagnetic induction from external objects (such as high-tension cables, TV sets, and
radios).
2. Form: A form provides a more convenient and attractive way to enter, display and/or print
the data in a table.
3. Query: A query answers a question about the database. The most common type of query
specifies a set of criteria, then searches the database to retrieve the records that satisfy that
criteria.
4. Report: A report presents the data in a table or query in attractive fashion on the printed
page.
5. Macro: A macro is analogous to a computer program and consists of commands that are
executed automatically one after the other. Macros are used to automate the performance
of any repetitive task. Macros are beyond the scope of this class.
A paint program is a software graphics program that allows the user to draw or paint bitmapped images
on a computer. Though most are discontinued, examples include: KolourPaint, XPaint, Deluxe Paint,
MacPaint, and Microsoft Paint, which is shown in the picture.
Question 5
In the film camera (analog camera), the light falls on a film. This is photosensitive meaning it
undergoes a chemical change once it receives the light. The light image is then processed and
sent for printing.
The following sections discuss the types of cables used in networks and other related topics.
