Welcome to the 2018 Galway Jazz
Festival. We are thrilled once again to be
able to bring you four days of top class
local, national and international jazz and
improvised music.
We live in strange times, and one of
the strangest things being talked about
these days is the imminence of Brexit.
With that in mind, we have ‘reached
out’ as they say, to our jazz brethren
and sistern in the former Great Britain
to welcome some amazing musicians,
and whatever about the single customs
union, we’ll make sure that there are no
frontiers when it comes to music and art.
There is an astonishing amount of jazz
talent in Germany right now, and we are Artistic Director
delighted to launch snagceol.de with the GJF18
kind support of the Goethe Institut Irland,
hosting some of the finest German
jazz musicians.
Over the four days of the festival, we
will hear musicians from 14 countries
, in 20 venues, and over 50 gigs. Plus
plenty of talk, both formal and informal,
some cinema, kids stuff, masterclasses
and loads of unexpected and unplanned
delights. Come and say Hi,... we’re a
friendly bunch, and we value you, the
listener, and your curiosity and sense of
adventure, which was so inspiring for
us over the past few years of putting
together a cracking festival. Our borders

Poets have often been inspired by the sound of jazz,
and the clubs, cafés, bars and shebeens where it is
played. Writer, jazz lover and well known broadcaster
Vincent Woods will read poems, prose pieces and
texts, with music by Festival Director, flute player and
RTE LyricFM presenter Ellen Cranitch.
Since arriving in Ireland in 2004 from the Congo,
Niwel Tsumbu has developed an enviable
reputation as a masterfully elegant and fluent
guitarist, vocalist, musician, and composer. He
continues to collaborate with leading DJ Donal
Dineen on his Parish live act, the Crash Ensemble,
composer Roger Doyle, Eamon Cagney’s Treelan
ensemble, Dave Flynn’s DFF, Mel Mercier, and
many more. This is an extraordinary opportunity
to be ‘up close’ with one of the most versatile and
respected musicians residing on the Island.

Real’, a band dedicated to playing the
music of Jaco Pastorious’ 70/80’s jazz
fusion group Weather Report.
Revered amongst electric bassists,
the playing of Pastorious has been an
influence, an inspiration, a celebration,
and a high tide mark in terms of the
role of the bass in music. So it was for a
young Barry Donohue when the 13 year
old received a copy of ‘Heavy Weather’
as a birthday present from his father.
When he’s not touring with Mary
Coughlan or performing with numerous
other ensembles, it’s in the music of
Weather Report where the beating heart
of this musician rests. Joined by four
of the hottest musicians working out of
Ireland, ‘Plaza Real’ will do great justice
to their musical heroes, and then some!

Poppy Ackroyd is a composer from Poppy Ackroyd gratefully acknowledges

That’s Life present In Flow, an exciting
project combining Javanese Gamelan,
improvisationand electronic music.
A collaboration with facilitator and
jazz musician Aengus Hackett, the
ensemble has been working intensely
together for the past year, composing
and developing a new approach for
using improvisation to make music on
the Gamelan. Central to the sound of

the acoustic instruments, as well as
programmed electronic beats using
sampled gamelan instruments.

Finnish composer, poet, innovator and
musician Yrjänä Sauros is starting to
gain quiet infamy for the creation and
use of the Saurophone. While it may
sound like an invention of Dr. Seuss,
this instrument comprises a single
long string, the sound of which is
strengthened through amplification,
layered through looping, and processed
in realtime to create rich groove-driven
melodies.

Sixty years on from one of the most iconic festivals
in the jazz canon, the landmark film ‘Jazz on a
Summer’s Day’ graces our festival screen with an
especially restored and re-mastered edition.
Jazz On A Summer’s Day is the first full-
colour Jazz concert film made and is
rightly acclaimed as being one of the
most exciting concerts ever recorded.
The setting was the 1958 Newport
Jazz Festival in Rhode Island and it’s
director was commercial and fashion
photographer to the stars Bert Stern.
At that stage, Stern’s reputation and
growing fame was for his black and
white photographs of Marilyn Monroe
and the beautiful people of New York.
The veteran Columbia Records jazz
producer, George Avakian, was the
musical director of the film.
Stern brought the look and style of his
renowned photographs to this, his first
motion picture, documenting some of
the most stunning images of live jazz
ever brought to the silver screen. With
the look of an impressionist painting,
Stern lets the artists and the people who
attended Newport 1958 do the talking
with minimal additional voice-over
