President Ron Mucovich opened the
meeting with a verbal flourish. Roger
Gregory offered an invocation that
reminded us to live our life today.

Debbie Roessler recently returned from
a trip to Idaho, She is also sad about
the closing of Gump’s Department Store
which has been a landmark in San
Francisco since 1861.
Dianne Wilson is happy that Lou and
Debbie stopped at their Idaho ranch
while they were on their trip.
Angelo Costanza presented a check to
the club in memory of Ron Julian, a
past member of our club who passed
away recently.
Linda May spun the wheel for a
vacation that She and Frank took to
Erie, Gettysburg and State College PA
and the Jersey Shore.

It was announced that Clyde Wilson is
now an honorary member of the club,
Congratulations, Clyde!
FIRE RELIEF: If you would like to donate
to fire relief in the Redding area, please
get your check to Treasurer Lad, made
out to Moraga Rotary Club or Foundation,
and he’ll send our consolidated donation.
Debbie Roessler presented a flag from
the Lahore Model Town Rotary Club in
Pakistan. Debbie received this flag
when she attended the International
Convention in Toronto recently.

At the end of the last Rotary year, then
president, Dianne, lead an effort and
succeeded to make Moraga Rotary a
100 Percent Paul Harris club. Our
foundation chair, John Erickson,
presented many Paul Harris pins to club
members last evening.

~PROGRAM~~
Our speakers today were Lisa Gregory
and Shamekka Marty talking about
Lupus and their personal experiences
with this disease. Lisa and Shamekka
were introduced by Lisa’s dad, Roger
Gregory. The talk today was to
increase the knowledge and awareness
of this disease.
Shamekka and Lisa Addressing the Club Last Night
Lisa began by describing the symptoms
of this autoimmune disease which are
varied and different for each person.
Symptoms include rashes, joint pain,
and fatigue. Lupus attacks the bodies
healthy tissue along with viruses,
bacteria and germs. Thus, the body is
essentially attacking itself.
Cases of Lupus in women outnumber
men 9 to 1. The disease is more
prevalent in the African, Asian and
Hispanic populations.
Lisa described her own experiences
with Lupus indicating how hard the
disease is to diagnose, the physical
effects of the disease along with her
ability to live with the disease.
Shamekka talked about the presence of
autoimmune diseases in her family
including her grandmother (rheumatoid
arthritis) and mother (Lupus). She also
talked about the personal experiences
with Lupus including Reynaud’s disease
which caused the tissue on the ends of
her fingers to deteriorate.
Shamekka talked about her work to help
people with Lupus and thus bring value
to the world. She talked about her
association with the Lupus Association
of Northern California,
Shamekka and Lisa displayed their
positive mental attitude and how they
live very productive lives.
Louise Schopke won the raffle but did
not find the green marble this week.
She was “So Close”!”

AN EXCITING YEAR ABROAD
Each year over 7000 Rotary Youth
Exchange Students travel to
another country for a rare
experience in a different culture.
This extremely popular program
was initiated in 1927 in Nice,
France and Copenhagen, Denmark
as a positive way to promote better
relations among European nations
following World War I.
The majority of the Exchanges are
for one high school year, with the
students living in the homes of
Rotary members. Rotary Districts
usually provide opportunities for a
wide variety of entertainment,
cultural, and traditional activities for
all Exchange students living within
the host district. Students also
learn much about the customs,
language and family life in their
host nation.
Clearly, the Rotary Youth
Exchange program has become a
significant agent in promoting
Rotary’s goal of building greater
world understanding among
peoples, and is one small
step.leading to peace in the world.
