MEET PER B SUNDBERG.

Designer. Artist. Maverick. Per B Sundberg is one of Sweden’s most acclaimed glass and ceramic
artists. His punkish approach features absurd humour but also a high level of craftsmanship.
Previously, a designer at Orrefors glassworks and Professor at the University College of Arts,
Crafts and Design in Stockholm. Today, Per B Sundberg exhibits in galleries, museums and
art fairs internationally. IKEA invited Per B Sundberg into an explorative process and is proud to
present the results with this limited edition collection launching in September 2018, available in
all London stores and online.

Pelle made some ceramic props for a friend’s film. A skull

and a few bones. He liked the skull, so he continued with the
motif, like the birds and poodles. He experimented by adding a
hat or fake hair or for FÖREMÅL, a crown.
For him, it’s comical food for thought: Life is short folks.

 In the borderland between
art and design.
Artistic objects stir up emotions. And in our

homes, emotions are as important as the
functional home furnishing solutions that
IKEA is known for. That’s why we’ve teamed
up with artist Per B Sundberg to create
FÖREMÅL. It fulfils our need for the pretty,
ugly and lovely in our lives. Sometimes we
can’t explain the things we love, but we love
them all the same.
Per B Sundberg (or Pelle as everyone calls him)
is hard to define. He moves in the borderland of
art and design with never-ending curiosity. “I’ve
probably always thought that I’m an artist, or
maybe a sculptor. I have never labelled myself a
craftsman or ceramicist,” he says. In his process,
he follows his childish curiosity. Steered by feel-
ing rather than trends, he says that his works are
“lush, a bit rough and burlesque, they are based
on folklore and are easy to understand.”
Experimenting at all times
Pelle often works with objects he has found. In his
studio in Gustavsberg outside of Stockholm, there
are figurines, everywhere. When IKEA put him
in a new context at the supplier in Vietnam Pelle
says that “it was awesome, it was so big and full
of knick-knacks. The supplier was perfect for me.”
Pelle picked and mixed from what he saw.
While making FÖREMÅL, Pelle disappeared. The
team at IKEA wondered what was going on, but
he soon re-appeared with mountains of patterns,

something new for the artist. Pelle was creating
an analogue universe of patterns for the textiles,
rugs and boxes in the collection. For example, Pelle
scanned an old egg carton, his pyjamas and fa-
vourite pink sweater. “Then I placed the collage on
an A4-scanner at home and mirrored the pattern
on the computer.”
Fun collaboration
Pelle says he’s had a lot of fun working with IKEA.
“I enjoy doing different things and try to fight
with people’s expectations. Now I can make a tray
that is industrially produced and sold for under 10
Euros which makes my things accessible to a big
audience. I like the democratic aspect of that,” he
says.
FÖREMÅL is the fourth collaboration with an
icon of Swedish design. IKEA is curious about
exploring its Swedish design heritage but the pur-
pose of these collaborations is not to look back-
wards, it’s to push IKEA into the future. In the
foreword to a book about Per B Sundberg, being
released with the collection, IKEA Head of Design
Marcus Engman, says that at first glance, IKEA
and Pelle aren’t especially alike – the big design
brand and the rebel artist. “But we have the same
curi­osity. And we are driven by the same desire to
challenge the accepted. We are as eager as each
other when it comes to researching the unknown.”

 Book “Per B Sundberg”
Get to know Per B Sundberg. For real. This self-titled book covers his journey from rebel student to
in-house designer at Orrefors all the way to his break-out exhibition in Stockholm and adventures with
IKEA developing the FÖREMÅL collection in Vietnam. He's an artist like no other, this book is an in-
depth investigation into how and why he works the way he does. It’s filled with great documentation
of many of his iconic works, his studio in Gustavsberg and working with the IKEA team on the factory
floor in Vietnam. The book is released alongside the collection and is a part of the FÖREMÅL range.
