Career Episode 1
Introduction
The first career episode of my Competency Demonstration Report is founded on a project
which I completed for the client Kurian George and Sumitha Jacob. I was employed as an
Estimator and Quantity Surveyor with SJ Builders Private Limited, Melbourne, Australia. The site
address was Ferngully, Crescent, South Morang. I successfully completed this project in 9
months from March 2015 to November 2015. I was assisted by my colleagues in the effectual
execution of this project.

Background

CE1.1 SJ Builders Private Limited is a company that provides perfect building solution for
innumerable clients. The company deals in building homes and redesigning them as per the
requirements of the clients. The company appoints individual project managers for a
project and the project managers thus develop customized housing and Building Solutions.
The Company takes projects from client companies and assigns their workforce to execute
them successfully. The vision of the company is to provide quality service and product to
the clients.

CE1.2 This project aimed to develop a site at Fern gully, Crescent, South Morang for the
client. I was appointed as and Estimator and Quantity Surveyor. It was a single story
building, and the client asked complete designing of the building. I went to the site to
gather preliminary details and made a proposal draft out of the collected data.

CE1.3 The client analyzed thoroughly the draft proposal prepared by me. Finally, my
design and got approved and I was appreciated from both ends. The whole project work

excluded any costs incurring owing to additional edge beam deepening, bored piers and
blinding concrete. Along with this, it also did not include cost of landscaping.

CE1.4 During this project work, I fulfilled some critical responsibilities as given below:

nquires for material prices, study, compare and negotiate with suppliers and
subcontractors and get quotations from them.

rafting sites using AutoCAD by considering the required alterations.

Personal Engineering Activity

CE1.5 I began my work by a thorough study and analysis of the existing process. I
proposed a novel layout and contacted with different material suppliers. I sent them
quotations for my requirements. I extracted all the vital details and formed a report for my
company and my client to comprehend and then executed the project as desired and also in
a successful way. It was a brainstorming task for me.

CE1.6 I collected the conceptual plan from the architect and thoroughly studied it. I also
took working drawings for the site. I also obtained a copy of estate guidelines approval
from my company and always adhered to them during the project. I noted the main project
requirements and made a MS-Word file in English to be sent to every stakeholder and
supplier.

CE1.7 I faced some major issues too in this project as it was the first single-handed
project. I assured that concrete slab was designed as per structural drawing. It was a
crucial component of the whole project. I engineered roof truss frames, and double gazed
all the sliding doors of the building. I always took care of safety issues and other project
issues to complete this project effectually.

CE1.8 I had gained theoretical knowledge from my studies in the university, but this
project was my first hands-on practical experience as a Site Structural Engineer, and I
found that application of work was different from what I had learned at university. With
the help of my supervisors, I succeeded to avoid obstacles and learned how to lead the
project in a short period.

CE1.9 I prepared the complete work plan. I took data from similar projects, I made
calculations based on the old experiences, and I prepared a draft work plan. I discussed it

with my chief on technical meetings. These work plans consisted of the schedule of the
work, work description and the cost of the work. I also dealt with the suppliers to get
required amounts of materials which were calculated and determined from the project.

CE1.10 My work on-site started with the supervision of work on the foundation of the
building. A building audit firm was hired to supervise all construction work. They were
responsible for accuracy of the project, and the application on site was performed
according to their projections and according to the standards. I didn’t have any disputes
with the audit firm, because I made sure that the quality of our work will pass the
Construction standards.

CE1.11 I supervised both static and architectural projects at the same time. In the delicate
works stage, I oversaw all the works done on-site. These works included internal plastering
work, papier-mâché work, gypsum work, leveling concrete on the floor, sandpaper the
walls before painting, interior painting, etc. Since my work in this position and further on I
always work according to the schedule. The schedule helps to manage my time effectively
and to prepare progress reports, calculations, and drawings, etc. on time.

CE1.12 I always made sure that there must not be any damage to the environment owing
to my project activities. I also provided safe workplace standards to my project team, my
workers, and all the stakeholders involved in the project execution. I felt fortunate to be
given the opportunity to lead this kind of project. It was also a great honor for me to have
the appreciation and recognition of my manager on completion of the project.

Summary

CE1.13 this job was my first hands-on experience as a qualified Site Structural Engineer,
and I learned so much about the practical application of the situation. I had the opportunity
to practically apply all my civil engineering knowledge in the real sense. I enhanced my
time management qualities and also developed my communication skills. In addition to
this, I learned many things including how to read a project, leading workers, price analysis,
purchasing, communicating with people, etc. I gained knowledge in the field of civil
engineering as well as experience in other related areas. I learned great knowledge and
skill in building and construction during my time with my company.

Personal Engineering Activity

CE2.6 Working on this project was very challenging for me because of the large scope of the
project, my direct responsibility for work and on the big number of workers. I applied novel
techniques of construction in this project. I browsed the internet to get more information on the
techniques. I also read several books and journals to sharpen my skills and capabilities.

CE2.7 I held significant project responsibilities. I also worked in the technical office at the
same time preparing required documentation, reporting current situations, designing and drawing
structure projects. I had technical meetings with my chief at least once a week. In these meetings,
I published the works that have been done on site. After sessions, I applied the decisions that
have been agreed in meeting on site.

CE2.8 I went to the construction site in the mornings every day, and I made briefing meetings
with workers. During these briefings, I gave instructions for that day to the workers according to
the work schedule that has been decided on our weekly meetings. I recorded the works progress
on my field manual and reported the information to the site manager daily. I compared the
actions with the projects and also, I controlled the plan compliance.

CE2.9 During my site visits I also explained to the workers about the activities they must make
to follow the safety rules. With a small technical team, we made risk assessments to detect
problems we could encounter on site. As the result of our risk assessments site conditions
became following the national health and safety regulations. I made my workers to use safety
equipment, and I always observed that they worked according to safety standards.

CE2.10 I took over the responsibility of calculations and drawing for the project. Preparing of
these drawings provided me with a better understanding of the site and the construction
requirements. I applied all my knowledge in civil works, mathematics, IT and engineering fields
achieved during my studies, skills that I made during the university studies and my experience
obtained during employment in this company in the preparation of the project.

CE2.11 When I finished with the calculations of the dimensions of the structures, I drew them
in the Auto-CAD. I made predictions by using Excel and prepared the summary tables for the
results. When I completed all the calculations and design work, I developed the final report that
included engineering sketches, tables, operational descriptions and draft drawings, etc. Then the
technical meeting was arranged, and after approval of the project, we started to make an
application of the structures on site.

CE2.12 In this project I also acted as a member of the office technical team. At the end of the
original design stage, I worked with the cost estimation team to define the initial cost of the
project and to prepare a report for the project manager. We calculated the amount of the
materials necessary for the works, and we received offers from 3 suppliers. We compared these
offers, and we found the most effective option regarding price, quality, and deadlines.

Introduction

CE3.1 The third career episode of my Competency Demonstration Report is founded on a

project which I completed for the client Gideon DevavaramBhaskaran and
FebinPriyaThanakaraj. I was employed as an Estimator and Quantity Surveyor with SJ
Builders Private Limited, Melbourne, Australia. The site address was Mountleigh Circuit,
Craigieburn,Victoria. I successfully completed this project in 8 months from September
2015 to May 2016. I was assisted by my colleagues in the effectual execution of this
project.

Background

CE3.2 SJ Builders Private Limited is a company that provides perfect building solution for
innumerable clients. The company deals in building homes and redesigning them as per
the requirements of the clients. The company appoints individual project managers for a
project and the project managers thus develop customized housing and building solutions.
The company takes projects from client companies and assigns their workforce to execute
them successfully. The vision of the company is to provide quality service and product to
the clients.
CE3.3 I supervised the structural works on site and was responsible for applying formworks and

 Researching, investigating and evaluating materials, processes or systems related
to civil engineering works.
 Providing effective communication between various departments.
 Administering contracts and verifying and certifying satisfactory completion.
 Determining construction methods, materials and quality standards.

Personal Engineering Activity

CE3.6 I conducted all stages of civil work by myself from the stage of commencement to the
completion of the project. I designed some structure parts that were not existed in the
project. I used Microsoft Office and AutoCAD applications for creation of design and
documentation. I solved problems that we faced during the construction stage. In order to
succeed in this, I made lots of investigations from the different sources and use all my
previous experience and knowledge.
CE3.7 I also specified which construction contractor would do the structural works. The
selection was made through a tendering process. During the actual site work I was
submitting progress reports to project manager once in 2 weeks. Also I reported to
general manager once for a month. These reports included the cost analysis, time
analysis, and works programs. I discussed the materials to be purchased and their costs,
suppliers and other technical questions during technical meetings. Also I had general
meetings once a week between whole the project team and shared the parts we have done
in the project.
CE3.8 I supervised both workers and this engineer himself. I discussed the project one-to-one on
site, made decisions which applications should have be done according to the customer
demands and specifications. I followed the applications that have been made by workers
and I have corrected them if they made something wrong.
CE3.9 I worked with the mechanical engineers to determine where to put the foundation
depending on where the machines were to be located. All of the engineers (civil, electric
and mechanic) contributed to the design of the infrastructure and worked in coordination.
CE3.10 I found solutions for the problems with the help of his knowledge and his help and I
improved myself very much.I was responsible for supervising the contractor on-site as
there were different problems that occurred every day. Although the contractor had a civil

engineer and a master builder they made mistakes therefore a third eye was always
useful. The most common mistake was in the reinforcement process.
CE3.11 While the construction work continued, I purchased materials for the civil works. I was
the only person who understood civil works in the company. In addition to the main
requirements concrete and steel, I purchased all materials from anchor bolt, sand and
gravel to screws etc. For each different purchase we took three different tenders to
compare and I reported to the general manager explaining why I chose that firm and why
I needed those materials. The main parameter for the comparison between different
companies was quality and cost. I managed this very successfully.
CE3.12 Before I started to design the channels, I received soil report, architectural technical data
from our mechanical department, topographic field application, other data sheets and
various calculations. Then I prepared a draft design for the project. These drafts have been
evaluated during technical meeting which were attended by me, mechanical engineers
and our project manager.
CE3.13 In these meetings we discussed the feasibility of the projects, costs, implementation
methods and other technical aspects of the project. I worked in close collaboration with
mechanical and electrical engineers. After the evaluation of the draft, I prepared the final
project and it was approved by the project manager.
Summary
CE3.14 I gained great knowledge and skills in concrete, steel, formwork and delicate works
during my time in this company working on this Project. Because I was the only engineer
in the office and on-site, I learned the key aspects that a designer should take into
consideration including the specific details about projects and I had the capability to work
with different departments. My time management skills allowed time and my team to
finish our objectives on time.I increased my knowledge and experience by applying my
professional skills in another company.
