Solving one-step equation Teacher: Randa Ahmad

Unit: Solving linear Equation. Course: Foundation of math

Objective:
NC.M1.A-CED.1 Create equations and inequalities in one variable that represent linear, exponential, a
relationships and use them to solve problems/equations.

An equation is a mathematical expression that includes numbers and variables such as

X+3=16 3X+5=13 4X+1=X+10 Y+6=2Y

Solving Equations Means solving for X or Y, by isolating the variable on one side of the
equation and all numbers to the other side of the equation.

For EXAMPLE: Solve the following equations by solving for X.

1) 2x + 5 = 13

Step-1 isolate X by subtracting 5 on both sides

2x+5-5 = 13-5
2x=8

Step 2 Divide both sides by 3 to isolate X

2x = 8
2 2

1x= 4

Step 3 check your answer by substituting

If X= 4 then 2(4) +5 = 13 is that correct
8+5 = 13 yes it is correct.
Equation: Check:

5x + 6 = 8x + 3 If x=1
6 = 3x + 3
3 = 3x 5(1) +6 = 8(1) +3
1=x
11 = 11

example one to remove numbers from both
sides to isolate the variable.
Example 3: 4x + 1 = x + 10 13 = 13
3x + 1 = 10
3x = 9
x=3

.
2(2x + 3) = 2x + 16 26 = 26
4x + 6 = 2x + 16
2x + 6 = 16 *Remember to go back to
