1.

a. If the dimensions of the dog pool must be the same as the family pool then they are 20 feet by 20 feet
by 6 feet which is given to you in the question.

b. To find the amount of water needed you must find the volume of the pool. The volume of a
rectangular prism is length x width x depth. The length and width are both 20 feet and the depth is 6
feet minus 6 inches which is 5 ft 6 inches or 5.5 ft. 20 x 20 x 5.5 = 2,200 ft^3

c. The amount of pool liner is found by determining the surface area of the pool. The surface area is the
sum of the areas of all of the sides. In the case of a rectangular prism such as this, there will be 2 sides
with area of 20 x 20 (the top and bottom) and 4 sides with area of 20 x 6 (the walls). Since the top of
the pool will be uncovered, you eliminate one of the 20 x 20 sides and are left with four 20 x 6 areas
and one 20 x 20 area. 20 x 20 = 400 ft^2 and 20 x 6 = 120 ft^2. You must multiply 120 by 4 because
there are 4 of these and you get 480. Add 480 and 400 to get your final answer of 880 ft^2.

2. For this question I'm assuming the the steps are equal to the width of the pool, as in one of the four
sides of the pool will have steps across it's entire length.

Each of the steps will have a width of 1 ft and a depth of 1 foot.

Each horizontal line is 1 ft and each vertical line is 1 ft.

(ignore the periods, they're just there for spacing)

If they have a width of 1 ft and a height of 1 ft and a length of 20 ft then the first step has a volume of
20ft^3 (1x1x20). What you need to realize now is that you cannot just multiply 20 by 6 and have the
correct answer. For the second step, although only 1 foot of it is showing for you to step on, it actually
has a width of 2 feet from the edge of the wall. (you add the 1st vertical line and the 2nd to get 2 ft
total. That being said, the second step has a width of 2ft, a height of 1ft, and a length of 20ft.
Multiplying l x w x h you get a volume of 40 ft^3. Using this principle you can find the rest of the steps
to be 3 x 1 x 20 = 60; 4 x 1 x 20 = 80; and 5 x 1 x 20 = 100. If you add up all of these volumes you
realize that the total volume of the set of stairs is 300 ft^3.

a. In order to figure out the amount of water needed you must realize that the steps are entirely below
the surface of the water. The water is 6 inches below the top of the pool, but the first step doesn't start
until 1 foot below the top of the pool which is 6 inches below the top of the water. This means that the
entire volume of the stairs is subtracted from the original volume of the pool. That is, take your answer
from 1b) 2200 ft^3 and subtract from it 300 ft^3 to get 1900 ft^3.

b. The amount of liner needed is again a function of the surface area. In this problem you don't use the
additive properties of the width of the steps. Although the second step has a width of 2 ft, only 2 foot of
that is visible and that is the only part that will be covered in liner. In fact, only the top and one side of
each step will be covered in liner. For step one the area of the top is 1ft x 20 ft and the area of the side
is also 1 ft x 20ft. This means the total surface area to be covered in liner of the first step is 40ft^2.
Since there are 5 steps and each one has an identical visible surface area, you can just multiply 40 by 5
and get the total visible surface area which is 200ft^2 which is your answer.
