Philippine Experience in

Developing Sustainable Geothermal Power Projects:

Geothermal for Peru’s Low Carbon Future and Social Development
Joeffrey A. Caranto and Agnes C. de Jesus

This keynote will address all the stages of geothermal development, from surface
exploration, field development and operation of the steam field and power plant. Focus
will be on The Philippine experience in geothermal development and will include
technical, environmental and social considerations.

The geothermal industry has been constantly growing and improving its processes to
be more efficient and continue to be environmentally friendly. The process of
reinjection of separated fluid from liquid-dominated resource has become one of
the proven practices in the industry that has resulted to the sustainability of the resource.
With proper geothermal resource management, power generation can last for hundreds of
years. For this reason the geothermal energy is considered the best renewable alternative
to provide base load energy.

The vast geothermal areas in Peru have the potential of delivering a baseload energy that
is clean and indigenous. It is just waiting to be harnessed. Peru is one of the two countries
in South America with the greatest geothermal energy potential and existing legal
framework to promote and develop this industry. Geothermal energy is Peru’s alternative
energy option that is clean, renewable, sustainable and stable that will ensure
diversification and energy supply in a medium and long term.

In addition, climate change is perhaps of the most important environmental issue of our
generation. As energy is a major trigger for this global crisis, an enlightened energy
choice is of paramount importance. Geothermal gives Peru the opportunity to meet its
Paris Climate Summit commitment on emissions reduction as well as underpin the
country’s sustainable economic development. In its 40-year journey, the Philippines,
through Energy Development Corporation (EDC), met multiple challenges and out of
these experiences the company formulated appropriate protocols, developed best
practices and delivered positive outcomes to the government, business and society.
EDC’s sustainable development strategy has three focal areas: a) environmental
stewardship and integrity for optimum ecosystem services, b) stakeholder engagement to
promote social welfare and c) strategic governance and business ethics to balance societal
and business interests. We are grateful that our country is blessed with geothermal to help
protect mankind. Everyone has a choice and EDC chose to be “powered by good” to leave
behind a livable planet for future generations. After gaining proficiency on geothermal
resources in our country, we are pleased to offer our knowledge, skills and talents to the
world.

Energy Development Corporation is one of the largest vertically integrated geothermal
companies in the world that has developed geothermal projects in The Philippines for the
last 40 years, and continues to expand overseas with geothermal projects in Indonesia,
Chile and Peru. As a green and renewable energy company with a strong financial
capability, EDC’s focus is on developing energy resources that are renewable and reliable
to provide the present and future generations a better life with clean and sustainable
energy.
