Installation Instructions for the CADSYM

ELECTRICAL IEC 617


Symbol Library.

NOTE: IF YOU ARE USING THE DEMO VERSION OF THIS LIBRARY, ONLY THE TOP LEFT
HAND SYMBOL IN EACH SELECTED DROPDOWN MENU IS ACTIVE. PICKING ANY
OTHER SYMBOL WILL CAUSE AUTOCAD TO PRODUCE AN ERROR MESSAGE. IF YOU
HAVE PURCHASED A CD, THIS DOCUMENT FILE AND SETUP EXECUTABLE FILE CAN
BE FOUND IN THE FOLDER NAMED;
ELECTRICAL IEC 617

The installation consists of two parts. First to install the files onto your hard drive, and secondly to
configure AutoCAD or LT.

Installation of program
Double click on the ‘setup.exe’ file you have just downloaded. Follow the screen instructions and a
C:\CADSYM65 folder will be created. The symbol files and support files will then load into that folder.

Configuring your version of AutoCAD or LT

AutoCAD LT 95
Run AutoCAD.

To set search path


From the AutoCAD menu bar, go to 'Tools' > 'Preferences'
Click on 'File System' tab
Select 'Support Dirs' .
Click on 'Add' button
Type C:\CADSYM65.
Click on 'Close' button

To install partial menu


From the AutoCAD menu bar, go to 'Tools' > 'Customize Menus'
Click on 'Menu Groups' file tab.
Click on 'Browse' button.
Navigate to the C:\CADSYM65 folder.
Make sure that 'Files of type' box is set to 'Menu Files (*mnc:*.mns)'
Click on 'P65_IEC617_A.MNS
Click on 'Open' button. 'C:\CADSYM65\P65_IEC617_A.MNS’ should appear
in 'File Name:' box.
Click on 'Load' button, then ‘Close’.

To position partial menu heading on AutoCAD menu bar.


Click on 'Menu Bar' file tab.
Open 'Menu Group:' drop list.
Highlight ‘ELECTRICAL_IEC617’.
In 'Menus:' window, highlight menu heading to be inserted.
In 'Menu bar:' window, highlight 'Format'.
Click on 'Insert' button and selected menu heading will appear in the
AutoCAD menu bar at top of screen. (The inserted menu heading will appear,
to the left of 'Format' in the AutoCAD menu bar at top of screen. You can
choose other positions.)
Repeat for the other menu headings, if required.

Some useful tips.

To ensure that wires and lines that interconnect symbols, line up correctly, make sure that the Snap
value on your drawing sheet is set correctly. This is automatically done for you if you use one of the
CADSYM prepared drawing sheets found at the bottom of the dropdown menus.
If you are using your own drawing sheets, the Snap values are:
0.2 for Imperial (standard)sized sheets.
8.0 for Metric sized sheets.
It is recommended that you click on 'Set Parameters' towards the top of each dropdown menu. This
action will set the 'Snap', Grid' and 'Linetype'

AutoCAD R14, LT 97 & LT98


Run AutoCAD.

To set search path


From the AutoCAD menu bar, go to 'Tools' > 'Preferences'
Click on 'Files' tab
Click on 'Support File Search Path' to highlight it.
Click on 'Add' button
Type C:\CADSYM65, depending upon library being installed.
Click on ‘Apply’, then 'OK' buttons in ‘Options’ window.

To install partial menu


From the AutoCAD menu bar, go to 'Tools' > 'Customize Menus'
Click on 'Menu Groups' file tab.
Click on 'Browse' button.
Navigate to the C:\CADSYM65 folder.
Make sure that 'Files of type' box is set to 'Menu Files (*mnc:*.mns)'
Click on 'P65_IEC617_B.MNS
Click on 'Open' button. 'C:\CADSYM65\P65_IEC617_B.MNS’ should appear
in 'File Name:' box.
Click on 'Load' button, then ‘Close’.

To position partial menu heading on AutoCAD menu bar.

To load partial menu


Type ‘cuiload’ on command line. ‘Enter’.
Click on ‘Browse’ in ‘Load/Unload Customizations’ dialog box.
In ‘Files of type:’select ‘Customized User Information (*cui)’.
In Select Customization File’ dialog box, ‘Look in’ C:\CADSYM65.
Highlight ‘P65_IEC617_D.CUI
'C:\CADSYM65\P65_IEC617_D.CUI’ should now appear in ‘File name’ box.
Click on ‘Open’.
Click on ‘Load’ in ‘Load/Unload Customizations’ dialog box.
‘ELECTRICAL_IEC617’ should now appear in ‘Loaded Customization
Groups:’ window.
Click on ‘Close’
IEC617(Met.)’ should now appear on the Menu Bar..

To select menu headings within partial menu


Type ‘cui’ , and hit ‘Enter’. ‘Customize User Interface’ dialog box should
appear.
In the ‘Customizations in All CUI Files’ window, open ‘Workspaces’, and then
depending upon the release of AutoCAD being used, right click on either
‘AutoCAD Default’, ‘AutoCAD Classic Default’ or ‘AutoCAD Classic’.
From the dropdown menu, click on ‘Duplicate’
Highlighted ‘Copy of AutoCAD Classic’ (or whatever) appears.
Right click on highlighted ‘Copy of AutoCAD Classic’
From dropdown menu, click on ‘Rename’ and type ‘CADSYM’.
Hit ‘Enter’.
Right click on ‘CADSYM’, and from the dropdown menu, click on ‘Set
Current’.
Right click on ‘CADSYM’ again, and from the dropdown menu, click on
‘Customize Workspace’. In the ‘Workspace Contents’ pane, ‘Customize
Workspace’ changes to ‘Done’’.
Open ’Menus’, in the ‘Workspace Contents’ window.
In the ‘Customizations in All CUI Files’ window, open ‘Partial CUI Files’.

Open ‘ELECTRICAL_IEC617’, Open ‘Menus’.
Click on check box to the left of ‘Menus’ (a tick means ‘selected’).
Click on check boxes to the left of required menu headings. The selected
menu headings should now appear at the bottom of the list of menus
appearing in the ‘Workspace Contents’ window

To position menu headings on AutoCAD menu bar


In the ‘Workspace Contents’ window, left click on a CADSYM menu and drag
it to the required position. For example, if ‘IEC617(Met.)’ is required to be
located between ‘Format’ and ‘Tools’, drag ‘IEC617(Met.)’ up the list until the
horizontal bar lies between ‘Format’ and ‘Tools’.
Click on ‘Done’, ‘Apply’, then ‘OK’.

To remove a CADSYM heading from an AutoCAD menu bar


Type “cui’ on command line and hit ‘Enter’. ‘Customize User Interface’ dialog
box should appear.
In the ‘Customizations in All CUI Files’ window, under ‘Workspaces’ right
click on the required workspace. For example ‘CADSYM’
In the ‘Workspace Contents’ window, click on ‘Customize Workspace’ . This
changes to ‘Done’.
Open ’Menus’.
In the ‘Customizations in All CUI Files’ window, open ‘Partial CUI Files’, Open
‘ELECTRICAL_IEC617_, Open ‘Menus’.
Click on ticked check boxes to the left of menu headings to be removed.
(This will remove the check mark). The selected menu headings should now
be removed from the bottom of the list of menus appearing in the ‘Workspace
Contents’ window.
Click on ‘Done’ again, then ‘Apply’, and then ‘OK’.

Notes:-
1) The above installation procedure has created a Workspace named
‘CADSYM’. If you do not wish to use the symbol libraries, click on
‘Window’ on the menu bar and then ‘Workspaces’ and then ‘AutoCAD
Default’

Your menu is now loaded.

Run AutoCAD.

Note: The ‘Menu’ can now be displayed in two ways, ‘AutoCAD Classic’ and the new ‘Ribbon
Toolbar’. To change the display to ‘AutoCAD Classic’, type ‘Menubar’ and hit ‘Enter’. ‘Enter new

value for MENUBAR <0>:’ will appear on the cursor. Change the <0> to <1>, and hit ‘Enter’.
>Menubar will appear. This installation procedure applies to the ‘AutoCAD Classic’, type ‘Menubar’.

To set search path


From the AutoCAD menu bar or browser, go to 'Tools' > 'Options' .
Click on 'Files' tab, if not already on top.
Click on 'Support File Search Path'. To open it. (click on ‘+’ sign).
Click on 'Add' button.
Type C:\CADSYM65 in empty box.
Click on ‘Apply’, then 'OK' buttons in ‘Options’ window.

To load partial menu

Click on ‘Open’.
Click on ‘Load’ in ‘Load/Unload Customizations’ dialog box.
‘ELECTRICAL_IEC617_ should now appear in ‘Loaded Customization
Groups:’ window.
Click on ‘Close’
IEC617(Met.) should now appear on the Menu Bar.

To select menu headings within partial menu


Type ‘cui’, and hit ‘Enter’. ‘Customize User Interface’ dialog box should
appear.
In the ‘Customizations in All CUI Files pane, open ‘Workspaces’, (if not
already open), then right click on ‘AutoCAD Classic’.
From the dropdown menu, click on ‘Duplicate’.
Highlighted ‘Copy of AutoCAD Classic1’ appears.
Right click on highlighted ‘Copy of AutoCAD Classic1’
From dropdown menu, click on ‘Rename’ and type ‘CADSYM’.
Hit ‘Enter’.
Right click on ‘CADSYM’, and from the dropdown menu, click on ‘Set
Current’.
Right click on ‘CADSYM’ again, and from the dropdown menu, click on
‘Customize Workspace’. This changes the ‘Properties’ group to ‘Workspace
Contents’ group.
Open ’Menus’, in the ‘Workspace Contents’ pane.
In the ‘Customizations in All CUI Files pane, open ‘Partial Customization
Files’.
Open ‘ELECTRICAL_IEC617_
Open ‘Menus’.
Select menus by checking the appropriate check box to the left of required
menu headings (a tick means ‘selected’).
The selected menu headings should now appear at the bottom of the list of
menus appearing in the ‘Workspace Contents’ pane

To position menu headings on AutoCAD menu bar


In the ‘Workspace Contents’ pane, left click on a CADSYM menu heading
and drag it to the required position. For example, if ‘IEC617(Met.)’ is required
to be located between ‘Format’ and ‘Tools’, drag ‘IEC617(Met.)’ up the list

until the horizontal bar lies between ‘Format’ and ‘Tools’.
Repeat, for the other menu headings
Click on ‘Done’, ‘Apply’, then ‘OK’.
Note:- In order to read the menu bar correctly, it may be necessary to open
the ‘Workspaces Settings’ toolbar and toggle between ‘CADSYM’ and
‘AutoCAD Classic’. If the toolbar is not open, right click on any toolbar then
click on ‘Workspaces’.

To remove a CADSYM heading from an AutoCAD menu bar


Type “cui’ on command line and hit ‘Enter’. ‘Customize User Interface’ dialog

In the ‘Customizations in All CUI Files’ pane, under ‘Workspaces’ right click

Open ‘Menus’.

Run AutoCAD.

IEC617(Met.) should now appear on the Menu Bar.

To select menu headings within partial menu

Note:- In order to read the menu bar correctly, it may be necessary to open

AutoCAD & LT versions of 2015


Run AutoCAD.

Note:
To display the CADSYM menus, it is necessary to display the AutoCAD traditional 'Classic'
Menubar. To the left of the header, at the top of the screen is a symbol consisting of an inverted
triangle with a short dash above it. Click on this symbol, and from the drop down menu, click on
"Show Menu Bar.

The traditional 'Classic' menubar should now appear, above the ribbon menu.

To set search path

To position menu headings on AutoCAD menu bar


In the ‘Workspace Contents’ pane, left click on a CADSYM menu heading
and drag it to the required position. For example, if ‘IEC617(Met.)’ is required
to be located between ‘Format’ and ‘Tools’, drag ‘IEC617(Met.)’ up the list
until the horizontal bar lies between ‘Format’ and ‘Tools’.

Repeat, for the other menu headings
Click on ‘Done’, ‘Apply’, then ‘OK’.
Note:- In order to read the menu bar correctly, it may be necessary to open
the ‘Workspaces Settings’ toolbar and toggle between ‘CADSYM’ and
‘AutoCAD Classic’. If the toolbar is not open, right click on any toolbar then
click on ‘Workspaces’.

To remove a CADSYM heading from an AutoCAD menu bar


Type “cui’ on command line and hit ‘Enter’. ‘Customize User Interface’ dialog
box should appear.
In the ‘Customizations in All CUI Files’ pane, under ‘Workspaces’ right click
on the required workspace. For example ‘CADSYM’
From the dropdown menu, click on ‘Customize Workspace’. This changes the
wording of the ‘Customize Workspace’ button in the ‘Workspace Contents’
window to read ‘Done’.
Open ’Menus’ in the ‘Workspace Contents’ window.
In the ‘Customizations in All CUI Files’ window, open ‘Partial CUI Files’,
Open ‘ELECTRICAL_IEC617_,
Open ‘Menus’.
Click on ticked check boxes to the left of menu headings to be removed.
(This will remove the check mark). The selected menu headings should now
be removed from the list of menus appearing in the ‘Workspace Contents’
window.
Click on ‘Done’, then ‘Apply’, and then ‘OK’.

Notes:-
4) The above installation procedure has created a Workspace named
‘CADSYM’. If you do not wish to use the symbol libraries, open the
‘Workspaces Settings’ toolbar and deselect the ‘CADSYM’ workspace.

Your menu is now loaded.

Some useful tips.

To ensure that wires and lines that interconnect symbols, line up correctly, make sure that the Snap
value on your drawing sheet is set correctly. This is automatically done for you if you use one of the
CADSYM prepared drawing sheets found at the bottom of the dropdown menus.
If you are using your own drawing sheets, the Snap values are:
0.2 for Imperial (standard)sized sheets.
8.0 for Metric sized sheets.
It is recommended that you click on 'Set Parameters' towards the top of each
dropdown menu. This action will set the 'Snap', Grid' and 'Linetype'

AutoCAD & LT versions of 2016 & Newer


Run AutoCAD.

Note:
To display the CADSYM menus, it is necessary to display the AutoCAD traditional 'Classic'
Menubar. To the left of the header, at the top of the screen is a symbol consisting of an inverted
triangle with a short dash above it. Click on this symbol, and from the drop down menu, click on
"Show Menu Bar". Alternatively, type ' Menubar ', hit ' Enter ', change the ' 0 ' for a ' 1 ', and hit '
Enter '.

The traditional 'Classic' menubar should now appear, above the ribbon menu.

To set search path


From the AutoCAD menu bar or browser, go to 'Tools' > 'Options' .
Click on 'Files' tab, if not already on top.
Click on 'Support File Search Path'. To open it. (click on ‘+’ sign).
Click on 'Add' button.
Type C:\CADSYM65 in empty box.
Click on ‘Apply’, then 'OK' buttons in ‘Options’ window.

To load partial menu


Type ‘cuiload’, which should appear in the drawing area, by the mouse
cursor. Hit ‘Enter’.
Click on ‘Browse’ in ‘Load/Unload Customizations’ dialog box.
In 'Files of type', select 'Customized Files (*.cuix).
In 'Select Customization File’ dialog box, ‘Look in’ C:\CADSYM65.
Highlight ‘P65_IEC617_E.CUIX
'C:\CADSYM65\P65_IEC617_E.CUIX’ should now appear in ‘File name’ box.
Click on ‘Open’.
Click on ‘Load’ in ‘Load/Unload Customizations’ dialog box.
‘ELECTRICAL_IEC617should now appear in ‘Loaded Customization Groups:’
window.
Click on ‘Close’
IEC617(Met.) should now appear on the Menu Bar.

To select menu headings within partial menu heading


Type ‘cui’, and hit ‘Enter’. ‘Customize User Interface’ dialog box should
appear.
In the ‘Customizations in All Files pane, open ‘Workspaces’, (if not already
open), then right click on ‘Drafting and Annotation Default’.
From the dropdown menu, click on ‘Duplicate’.
Highlighted ‘Copy of Drafting and Annotation 1' appears.
Right click on highlighted ‘Copy of Drafting and Annotation 1'
From dropdown menu, click on ‘Rename’ and type ‘CADSYM (EL_IEC617)’.
Hit ‘Enter’.
Right click on ‘CADSYM (EL_IEC617)’, and from the dropdown menu, click
on ‘Set Current’.
Right click on ‘CADSYM (EL_IEC617)’ again, and from the dropdown menu
click on ‘Customize Workspace’. This changes the ‘Properties’ group to
‘Workspace Contents’ group.
Open ’Menus’, in the ‘Workspace Contents’ pane.
In the ‘Customizations in All CUI Files pane, open ‘Partial Customization
Files’.
Open ‘ ELECTRICAL_IEC617 '
Open ‘Menus’.
Select menu headings by checking the appropriate check box to the left of
required menu headings (a tick means ‘selected’).
The selected menu headings should now appear at the bottom of the list of
menus appearing in the ‘Workspace Contents’ pane
