book and the Hollywood film
starring Julia Roberts. On the

people visit the compound,

come not for treatment or
prophecies, but only wishing to
see the house where scenes from
'Eat Pray Love' was filmed," said
Latra.
Each session with
Mangku Liyer costs Rp. 250,000
(US$28). Balinese patients are
often treated without charge,
bringing only a traditional offering
as compensation.
Those who only come to
see the location are allowed to
make a voluntary donation.
Mangku Liyer's home
compound is exceedingly simple,
a fact that surprises many visitors.
When the actual filming of the
Hollywood picture took place, the
home was quarantined for six
days, off limits to all except the
cast and crew of "Eat Pray Love.'
The old healer's family
freely admits they are now reaping
the windfall of Mangku Liyer's
fame. While keeping a watchful
eye on his Father who was
reading the palm and face lines of
a visiting foreigner, Latra
lamented : "Now, the big
responsibility is on my shoulders,
and I must be responsible to the
family our sacred knowledge
which must be passed on to the
next generation now that my
Father is old. Thus, I must
diligently study from Father, in
order that the knowledge and
power of the family is passed to
the next generation."

Hande, founder of Selco Solar in
Bangalore. “But he might have to
spend as much as 210 rupees of
that on kerosene or candles.”
By contrast, the modest
electricity produced by rooftop
panels is effectively free,
recouping the initial investment
after a few years. But even a 15
percent down payment on a loan
for a small solar home lighting
system which typically costs
8,500 to 11,000 rupees is
beyond the reach of many
families, Mr. Hande said.
In developing nations like
Sri Lanka or India, said Damian
Miller, an American-British
citizen who set up Orb Energy in
2006, the cost of a panel can be
20 percent of the annual income
of a poor off-grid household.
In terms of the scale of the
investment, he said, “it's similar
to a Western household buying a
car.”
Banks were long reluctant
to lend to the poor. Increasingly,
however, companies like Selco
and Orb Energy have been able
to convince some local banks
that low-income earners are
creditworthy and that solar-
related credits bring in solid
business in much the same way
that car financing does.
“The trick to making it work
commercially is to make it
affordable: To allow for bite-size
financing that the poor can pay
for, on a monthly basis, rather
than in large chunks,” said Mr.
Miller.
On the large-scale level

overall electricity grid activity
also is picking up.
“Many parts of Asia have

three or four times the
amount of sun that Germany
gets,” said Mr. Chander of the
Asian Development Bank. “It
makes a lot of sense to deploy
solar-based electricity
generation facilities here.”
At the same time,
governments have become
more willing to promote
alternative energies and,
because of falling costs, more
able to do so.
Over the years,
technological advances have
made panels cheaper and more
efficient, while the global
financial crisis created a glut of
panels as many projects in
Western countries stalled. China
has become a major
manufacturer and exporter of
solar energy equipment, though
it has yet to generate solar
power on a large scale.
Cheaper panels,
combined with lower interest
rates since the financial crisis,
have helped put solar energy
systems within the financial
reach of poorer nations, said Anil
Cabraal, an alternative energy
expert who, until his retirement
from the World Bank in April, got
many of the bank's solar projects
in Asia and Africa under way
over the past decade.
Under the solar initiative it
announced this year, the Asian
Development Bank hopes to
help put in place solar power
projects with a total capacity of
3,000 megawatts by 2013.
The total operating
capacity now is less than 500
megawatts. (One megawatt is
enough to cover the power
demand of about 200 homes, or
1,000 people, in developing
Asia.)
The solar mission in India

only about 2 megawatts now.
It also wants to help
increase off-grid solar energy,
currently at about 20 megawatts
a year, to 10 times that amount

program and is hoping it will
attract additional investments
from the private and financial
sectors, said Gauri Singh, a
senior official at the Ministry of
New and Renewable Energy in
New Delhi.
Vast as those numbers
are, the combined target will still
make up only a tiny fraction of
the overall energy mix in India,
Ms. Singh acknowledged. What
is more important, she said, was
that the initiative will help utility
operators and manufacturers
expand their knowledge of solar
technology.
Of course, solar energy
will never be able to wean the
world fully from its reliance on
fossil fuels. Right now, solar
energy accounts for less than a
quarter of a percent of overall
energy demand in Asia, and only
1 percent or 2 percent in the
United States, according to Mr.
Chander at the Asian
Development Bank.
Once the various solar
initiatives start operating in Asia,
however, solar energy could
contribute 3 percent to 5 percent
in the region, he said.
That may not seem like a
lot but it will make a big
difference to a lot of people.

HIS face crumpled, his
composure collapsed and his
trembling hands tried to wipe away
the tears when the siren sounded
on a grand final draw.
Sandy Hardiman, six, had
flown from Darwin for the biggest
day of his short life.
He had a gig at the MCG
to give a winning player his AFL
premiership medal.
And then he wasn't
needed. Without a winner, there
would be no presentation.

Hardiman, said Sandy was
proud and excited to be at the
MCG.
"Everyone at school
knew about it and everyone at
home at Darwin was watching
the match to see Sandy up on
the stage," she said.
Twenty two children
were devastated when they
missed their MCG moment.
Australia-wide, they had
competed throughout the
season to be chosen as a NAB
AFL Auskicker of the Year and
earn their place at the
biggest game of the year.
Ms Hardiman, who stayed
in Darwin with her three other
children, said father Tim had told
her Sandy had been "extremely
upset and it had taken a lot of
cuddles to bring him round".
"He's the sort of kid who is
either over-the-top with
excitement when he is happy, but
when he's sad, you know about it."
But despair can also melt
into joy and that was the case for
the Auskickers when the AFL
announced they'd be back to
present the medals at the replay.
Given the good news at
Darwin airport when he arrived
home exhausted late yesterday,
young Sandy was beside himself
with joy. "That's cool," he said.

wobbles set in and we all witnessed a

whites. The problem I see is that I have
no more finger nails to chew for the

be watching with a certain confidence
as the two titanic teams run on and do
battle once again. As repetitive as it is,
strangely I would have like to have
seen some extra time and question
why if it is a draw again this week they
will go into extra time but wouldn't last
week?? Go figure. I guess there are

craft that used a pilot's arms
and legs to power the wings,

students say they have flown
an engineless aircraft that
stays aloft by flapping its wings
like a bird.
International aviation
officials are expected to certify
next month that "The Snowbird"
has made the world's first
successful, sustained flight of a
human-powered ornithopter.
The Snowbird sustained
both altitude and airspeed for 19.3
seconds, in an August 2 test flight
near Toronto that was witnessed
by an official of the Federation
Aeronautique Internationale, the
University of Toronto announced.
A video of the flight was
shown on news programs.
Others have claimed to
have built machines that flew like a
bird, but the Canadian group says
they have the telemetry data to
prove their ornithopter powered
itself through the air rather than
just glided after being lifted aloft.
"Those past claims were
never verified," chief structural
engineer Cameron Robertson
said.
"We believe we are the
first, because we know what it took

The aircraft weighs just 42
kilograms, but has a wing span of
32 metres, which is comparable to
that of a Boeing 737 airliner.

The Wright brothers' first
powered flight in 1903 lasted 12

ALL ABOUT BALI
BALINESE NAMING TRADITION
Balinese naming tradition is closely
related to social strata or castes, and names
reflect cast not family or group. What is the
foundation of cast in Bali, that is a continuing
question unanswered. On scriptures and
religious books written so far advocating the
foundation is basic function. Among 4 casts
can be summed up as Brahmana Cast has the
function relating to the religious affairs,
Kesatrya Cast has the function of ruling the
country, Waisya Cast has the function in
moving the economic sector, and Sudra,
being the lowest is the servant.
Current fact in Balinese society is
not consistent with what are written and what
people know from the tradition. It seems that
the cast is based on genealogy instead of
function. It is hard to know when it's concept
was changed, but a period from 1345 AD to
16th century was supposed the probable time
of the shifting.
There are different treatment in term
of language, attitude, and place for each of the
cast. Especially for the older generation, say
before 1960s. Seen from the language,
Balinese then introduces 3 level of language
based on respect-layers. Lowest layer is the
Sudra and Waisya, and among them there is a
dialect they speak for their layer, with a little bit
variation if Waisya talk to the Sudra, and if the
Sudra talk to their master. For upper layers ( 2
casts ) which are also called "tri-wangsa" (
three-blood ) has a distinct dialect with slight
variation if the Kesatrya talk to Brahmana, and
a Brahmana talk to a Kesatrya. Among 2
upper casts and 2 below cast there are a great
different in the way of communication. The
basic concept of this dialect is that: A lower
cast if saying an activity that is referring to the
activity of high cast the words to be used is
their words. While if a low cast saying about
their own activity in front of the high cast they
must speak their own words. So basically the
lower cast must put themselves lower than the
higher cast in whatever event which must be
reflected by their two-way communication.
That is also the higher cast will put themselves
higher then their Sudra and Waisya casts by
reflection and expression of their
communication and attitudes.
Here are some notes on the names
of each cast:
Sudra and Waisya Cast
Man begins with "I" example I Made Putra
Woman begins with "Ni" example Ni
Made Putri
I or Ni indicate sex, while Made is the
number of birth. The tradition relating to the
number of birth in Bali exists that a family
would name their children as follows:
First child : Wayan or Gede or Putu
Second child: Made or Nengah
Third child: Nyoman or Komang
Fourth child: Ketut

system first developed in Bali the ruling
class used the group title as " Dewa " or "
Dalem ". This is become complicated again

"Dewa" or "Gusti" and of "Anak Agung" and
of " Cokorda"

Desak Putu. In higher casts it is not always
explicitly mentioned the number of birth,
although within their family this is also in
use. Some example of names among
various names being currently used:

to six finals series in his 11 seasons at

shocked to learn that they were

Bennett's men already past major obstacle

the Dragons' preliminary final
experience will galvanise
them for the decider.
The grand final still
awaits, but St George Illawarra
coach Wayne Bennett believes
the Dragons may have already
jumped the biggest hurdle in
their bid to end the club's NRL
premiership drought.
Through to a decider -
against the Sydney Roosters -
for the first time since the joint-
venture's inaugural
campaign in 1999,
Bennett owned up
to the pressure his
players were under
as they went into
S a t u r d a y ' s
preliminary final
against Wests
Tigers.
This was not
Bennett inferring
that beating the
Roosters was a fait
accompli, rather it
was a reflection of
exactly where his
side was at, with no Dragons
side before or after the merger
having achieved the ultimate
success since 1979.
Since the '99 decider
seven finals campaigns -
including last year's
demoralising straight sets exit -
had ended with the team failing
to make it to the first weekend in
October, a run which had critics
labelling the Red V finals
chokers.
"This game was so
important to them tonight,"
Bennett said after the pulsating
13-12 win over the Tigers.
"This game was a hard
game for them tonight ...

Asked why, Bennett - the
most successful coach in NRL
history with six premierships to
his name - said:
"You can't play in a
grand final unless you win

Given their regular
season dominance last year,

scenario the Dragons would
have found themselves in 12
months ago.
But Bennett conceded
the type of dogged performance
his side delivered against the
Tigers was not possible last
year, where they might not have
had the nerve to stick with a
game plan which saw them only
hit the lead for the first time with
six minutes remaining.
Last year - and for that
matter the last decade - the
Dragons faltered under the
glare of the finals spotlight, but
according to Bennett, this
year's version is different.
"They're all better for
(last year's run) - they couldn't
have won that game last year in
hindsight," Bennett said.
"The way they went
