Different Authors and their Written Works (* provide summary)

1. BORIS PASTERNAK. Won a Nobel Prize for his novel DR. ZHIVAGO but was forced by the Soviet
government to turn it down. Pasternak was very disappointed by those orders.

2. GEOFFRY CHAUCER. Wrote “The Canterbury Tales” who helped define the Middle English language.

3. DANTE ALIGHIERI. He is an Italian and he wrote the “Divine Comedy” and the famous “Inferno”.
4. LEW WALLACE. Wrote the “Ben-Hur”.

5. CHARLES DARWIN. Wrote the “On the Origin of the Species” which began a debate between Science
and religion that is still going on today. Darwin gained the information supporting evolution by natural
selection.

6. ROALD DAHL. Wrote the classic children’s novel “Matilda” and entitled his autobiography “Boy”. Also,
authored “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “James and the Giant Peach”. He was married to actress
Patricia Neal.

7. THOMAS GRAY. Wrote the heroic poem “Ode on the Death of a Favorite Cat, Drowned in a Tub of
Goldfishes”.

8. L. FRANK BAUM. Wrote the famous children’s book, “The Wizard of Oz,” a book that would become the
first of a series of fourteen. “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” usually reprinted under the name “ The Wizard
of Oz” was the first of 14 Oz novels written by Baum.

9. MIGUEL CERVANTES. Wrote the “Don Quixote”.

10. KING JAMES I OF GREAT BRITAIN. The Puritans were anxious for a less Catholic edition of the Bible,
and King James I agreed, and ordered a committee of scholars to produce a new translation.

11. HOMER. His works deal DIRECTLY with the Trojan War (not just its aftermath), the Iliad. The Iliad is
the story of the clash of heroes at the end of the Trojan War.

12. EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS. He was an American author who wrote the story, “Tarzan”. Tarzan was
such a popular character that Burroughs wrote over 20 books in the series. “Tarzan of the Apes” was made
into a movie in 1918. The 1934 sequel, “Tarzan and his Mate,” starred Johnny Weissmuller, who was
responsible for the famous “Tarzan” yell.

13. WASHINGTON IRVING. Wrote the short story “RIP VAN WINKLE” IN 1819.

14. EDGAR ALLAN POE. An American poet and fiction writer who wrote the; THE FALL of the HOUSE of
USHER (1839), The RAVEN (1845), The MASQUE of the RED DEATH (1842), and ANNABEL LEE (1849).

15. FRANK STOCKTON. Wrote the classic, clever short story “The Lady and the Tiger.”
