iPatch 360 Hardware and Installation 11 - 1

Introduction

iPatch stands for ‘intelligent patching’. iPatch adds

intelligence to the physical layer, the benefits of which are
becoming ever more apparent as the building infrastructure
market matures. iPatch requires intelligent hardware to be
linked to imVision software in order to provide the
infrastructure advantages. It is a comprehensive mix of
hardware and software and is covered in a new course,
GL5555 Certified imVision Support Specialist. More and more
installations are taking place and increasingly installation
engineers are involved in at least the iPatch hardware
installation aspect. This lesson covers installation of the iPatch
products including upgrading 360 iPatch ready copper and
fiber panels to iPatch enabled.

Why Intelligent Patching?

Before we look at the characteristics of iPatch, let’s take a look

at why an intelligent infrastructure solution might bring huge
benefits to today’s fast-changing networks.
It has become evident that a passive network infrastructure can
be a blind spot in a network. Effective configuration
management cannot rely on manual documentation or be
affected by potential mismatches in labeling that can result
from outdated information.
Critical incident management processes may be seriously
hampered by undetected changes at the physical layer, missing
port information, or unattended critical connectivity events.
Change management becomes a flying-blind exercise when
relying on paper work orders, unguided moves and changes,
and unknown connectivity paths, requiring labor-intensive
deployments and manual updating of applications.
An ad hoc approach to configuration, change, and incident
management is no longer an option for any serious business,
large or small.

By deploying an intelligent infrastructure, customers can gain
the vision, knowledge and control they need to optimize
critical processes and prevent unnecessary degradation of
performance or downtime.

With an intelligent infrastructure, configuration management

can rely on automated connectivity documentation, including
networked device discovery and location mapping, as well as
real-time reports showing up to the minute configuration
information.

11 - 4 iPatch 360 Hardware and Installation

Incident management is greatly enhanced with real time

detection of physical layer changes, monitoring of switch port
status, event notification, and integration with external devices
such as cameras or environmental monitors.

Change management can be made into a controlled and

automated process that relies on electronic work orders to
provide advanced guidance to the technician, while removing
the need for the IT administrators to get involved with the
cabling management details due to the use of intelligent service
provisioning and server deployment algorithms.
Integration with external applications allows for closed-loop
incident management and change management processes that
increase the efficiency and productivity of the entire
organization, while audit trails improve accountability. So,
Vision + Knowledge = Control.

SYSTIMAX 360 iPatch Components

The components of SYSTIMAX iPatch are:

1. Copper iPatch panels
2. Fiber iPatch panels
3. iPatch Rack controller
4. imVision system manager software

What is imVision?

The imVision Solution is the new Infrastructure Management

Solution from CommScope which includes SM (System
Manager) V7 software and an additional imVision controller. It
combines software and hardware platforms that allow
customers to document, administer and manage their network
infrastructure devices and connections

iPatch Rack Controller

This is the new main component in the iPatch system and is

used to communicate with all the panels in a rack and keeps a
local database of the port status learning all patching adds,
moves and changes involving iPatch ports on its rack
One iPatch controller must be installed in each rack or cabinet
with the iPatch panels. Note that the term Rack controller is
used in a generic way, and refers to iPatch RM (Rack Manager)
Plus devices, Panel Manager devices and also the new
imVision controller.

If there are iPatch panels installed on both sides of a rack or

cabinet, one controller must be installed on each side (one
would serve the front and one would serve the rear).
The display in the controllers can be used to show instructions
for moves/adds/changes pending for the rack, as well as
tracing information, alarms, etc.
Rack controllers can also communicate with each other. For this
purpose, they come with IN and OUT ports that allow the
interconnection of controllers in a “daisy-chain’ fashion,
creating the controller LAN (previously this was called the
Rack Manager LAN). One controller per controller LAN will
have an Ethernet connection and will communicate with the
imVision software.

iPatch Rack controllers are responsible for implementing iPatch

inference engine. The inference engine is the software that
tracks the sequence in which patch insertions or extractions
take place, and documents two consecutive insertions or
extractions as a patch /un-patch event.

The old rack manager below has been discontinued.

360 Panel Intelligence

iPatch Evolve 1100 GS3 & GS6

Now, let’s take a look at the characteristics of the intelligent
copper and fiber panels.

These copper panels come in two sizes: the 24-port panel that
takes 1U of rack unit of space, and the 48-port panel that takes
2U rack units.

There are also angled versions of both 24 port and 48 port.

The panels are factory assembled and tested with intelligence

built-in and are rated GigaSPEED XL GS3 or GigaSPEED X10D
GS6. They provide easy cable routing and bundling through
an improved rear cable management system.
There is one panel bus jumper cable to connect per 24 port
panel so a 48-port version comes with two jumpers and that is
two connections to the panel bus.

The intelligent panel is the heart of the iPatch System. Each 360
iPatch copper port or fiber port has an infrared (IR) sensor that
monitors the insertion/extraction of a standard patch cord.
Note this means it is possible to track even the patching of
simplex fiber connections.

ND3361
11 - 8 iPatch 360 Hardware and Installation

When the panel detects a patch cord being added or removed,

it records the change of connection locally in firmware. This
record lets you trace a cord connection by pressing the button
above one of the ports containing the patch cord. An LED
above each port turns on to indicate where the connection is
made, even across racks. In addition, the Panel Manager lights
and displays the connectivity details on its display.

PUSH BUTTON LED

11

Panels achieve this by communicating additions and removals

of patch cords to the Rack Controller in their rack. This
information is also communicated to other Rack Controllers
locally connected in a row of racks, and to the System Manager
software.
It is important to emphasize that iPatch panels work with
standard patch cords, unlike many other solutions. It is also
important to understand that the ‘patching intelligence’ is
external to the communications path, i.e. the copper or fiber
channel between say a PC and a switch.
iPatch panels are an integral part of the SYSTIMAX channel,
ensuring that consistent and reliable performance is
maintained.

iPatch-enabled means that the panels are ordered with iPatch

intelligence built-in at the factory.

360 iPatch G2 Fiber Shelf

The shelf is iPatch-enabled with iPatch intelligence built in at

the factory.
Ordered as a 360-iP-G2 it comes in two versions: fixed (FX) and
sliding (SD), and includes 4 LC cassettes, for a total of 24
duplex LC intelligent ports.
Please note that when ordering or identifying this panel, the
lower case iP in the code stands for iPatch, and not upper case
IP which is InstaPATCH. Also, the overall panel code
configuration for the two panels is slightly different.
One panel bus jumper is included, as this shelf requires one
connection to the panel bus.

360 iPatch G2 HD Fiber Shelf

Unlike the previous panels, the SYSTIMAX 360 iPatch-enabled

G2 High Density (HD) Fiber Shelf is only sold in iPatch-
enabled, which means that the panels are ordered with iPatch
intelligence built-in at the factory.

This shelf supports up to three iPatch G2 High Density pre-

terminated InstaPATCH Plus modules from LazrSPEED (LS),
TeraSPEED (TS), or OptiSPEED (OS) solutions for a total of 72
duplex LC ports (144 fibers) in a 2 rack unit footprint.
This sliding shelf features the elegant SYSTIMAX 360 design,
including a translucent door and bend limiters. The
Alpha/Beta module polarity orientation can be auto-detected
and reported to the System Manager software.

Note that the shelf comes with no modules. It has three plastic
covers. The modules must be ordered separately, either
individually or in packs of 3.
The shelf comes with one panel bus jumper, as it requires only
one connection to the panel bus.

Additional Hi Density Shelf Installation Information

In the case of a High Density fiber shelf, it is important to route

the panel bus jumper in preparation for installing the shelf. To
do this:
• First, remove the tape or twist tie securing the panel bus
jumper to the cable support.
• Second, route the panel bus jumper with protective
corrugated tubing around the end of the sliding rail to
the outside of the rail.
• Third, snap the corrugated tubing protecting the panel
bus jumper into the cable retainer on the outside of the
rail, as shown here.
• Position the corrugated tubing so that about one inch of
the tubing extends past the end of the cable retainer.

Position the exposed ribbon cable of the panel bus jumper in

the flat retainer on the outside of the sliding rail, as shown
here.

To install the shelf in the rack:

1. Remove the plastic cover from the shelf.
2. Fully extend the sliding shelf to allow access to the
mounting brackets.
3. Install the shelf in the rack using the four #12-24 x 3/8
inch mounting screws provided

Finally, connect the panel bus jumper to the nearest connector

on the panel bus. Remember that the connector is keyed. The
polarized tab on the jumper connector fits into the opening in
the header connector on the panel bus.

ND3361
11 - 12 iPatch 360 Hardware and Installation

It is important that you make sure that the jumper connector is

fully seated in the header connector on the panel bus.

The high density iPatch fiber modules must be oriented for the
proper InstaPATCH polarity. Identical modules are used at
each end of a trunk cable, but one module must be in the
ALPHA orientation and the other module must be in the BETA
orientation.

To install the modules:

1. First, fully extend the shelf.
2. If the plastic cover is installed on the shelf, remove it.
3. Next, to remove the blank panel from the left position in
the shelf, use a flat blade screwdriver to turn the two
quarter-turn latches to the open position.
4. Pull out the blank panel.
5. Rotate the module to the ALPHA or BETA orientation, as
needed. With the module’s quarter-turn latches in the
open (horizontal) position, align the module with the
opening in the shelf and slide it into the shelf so the
connector on the back of the module mates with the edge
connector on the back plane board.

ND3361
iPatch 360 Hardware and Installation 11 - 13

Important: Make sure no fiber cables are pinched beneath the
module.
Finally, use a flat blade screwdriver to turn both latches to the
closed (vertical) position. Repeat these steps to install
additional modules in the center and right positions.
Note: When installing only two modules in the shelf, use the
left and center positions.
Important: Dust covers are installed in the ports to protect the
fibers connected to the back of the ports. Do not remove dust
covers.

To finish with the installation, install the plastic cover and
trough door (both provided) to shield the shelf from foreign
particles.
The cover, which is made of clear, flame-retardant plastic,
slides on and off the shelf. The door for the patch cord trough
is hinged and has touch-latches for closing and opening.

iPatch Installation Tasks

To install an iPatch system logically, you must complete the

following tasks in the order described:

a) Mount the panel bus

b) Install the iPatch rack controller and set switches on back
c) Install iPatch panels, connect iPatch panels to panel bus,
power up rack controller and check panels
d) Install the other equipment in the racks
e) If more than one rack check routing for connecting to
adjacent iPatch rack controllers
f) Cable iPatch panels and other equipment
g) Power up rack controller and program panels in each rack
h) Connect either first or last iPatch rack controller to the
Network

Task A: Install the Panel Bus

The first step is to mount the panel bus in the rack or cabinet.

The panel bus is provided with the Rack Controller which
allows it to communicate to the iPatch panels. The bus needs to
be reasonably accessible, so inside the channel of a rack may be
difficult to access, but near enough to connect the ribbon cables
from the panels. Check that the surface is free of protrusions,
such as threaded inserts, nuts, and bolts.

ND3361
11 - 16 iPatch 360 Hardware and Installation

The new latest panel bus shipped with the new rack controller
has a deeper channel and fewer connections than the previous
version. The deeper channel design will be discussed later.

Once you have found a good place to install the panel bus,
follow these steps:
1. Unfold the panel bus, which is shipped folded in four
sections, each approximately 19 inches long.
2. Orient the panel bus with the ‘Bottom Rail’ label at the
bottom
3. One section at a time, remove the adhesive backing and
press the panel bus firmly against the surface.

Please note that a panel bus extension from one rack to another
rack is NOT allowed.

The panel bus may be cut for short racks but it needs to be
done cleanly ideally with scissors.
The panel bus connecting jumper cables must be clear from
patch cord ‘interference’ so they cannot be snagged or
disturbed by surplus patch cordage.

ND3361
iPatch 360 Hardware and Installation 11 - 17

Installing the iPatch Rack Controller

The second step is to mount the controller. It typically is

mounted at “eye” level so the recommended height is at the
34U position on a standard rack.

You will be able to populate iPatch panels above and below the
controller later. In the case of the imVision controller, you may
want to adjust the height of display unit by loosening the
retainer pin fastener and sliding the display unit up or down.
It should also be noted that the cable manager/display mount
bars can also be repositioned closer or further away from the
unit. This final position should be considered during initial
installation to clear fiber cord managers or the front door if
mounted inside a cabinet.
When finished, re-tighten the fastener to secure the display
position.

Connect the jumper cable in the rear of the controller to the

closest socket in the panel bus.

Panel Bus Cables

All new iPatch panels come with a redesigned jumper cable.

This is a short cable which includes one female connector to

attach to the panel bus, one small connector to attach to the
iPatch panel and a male 10 pin connector or socket that can be
“seated” inside the plastic U shaped Panel Bus protection
channel. This means that each time a panel is connected to the
panel bus and uses one port in the bus, the jumper used
provides a spare bus port.
This panel jumper is also compatible with the original style
panel bus, included with legacy Panel Manager and Rack
Manager Plus controllers

The deeper channel of the bus allows the additional socket that
is fitted to the new panel bus cables, to be firmly secured. Twist
the socket at 45° as it is put into the channel then twist back to
90° and the sides of the channel will grip it tightly. It sits over
the existing ribbon cable in the channel.

Setting Links between Rack Controllers

From
network

imVision controllers have a new multi-purpose port design

which allows them to function as either iPatch LAN ports or
Ethernet ports to provide connectivity to the System Manager.
This is handled by changing the position of the switches
adjacent to the ports themselves.
If an imVision controller is the first controller in a controller
LAN, Button A must be ‘pushed in’ for Ethernet LAN
communication, and Button B ‘left out’. This will configure the
‘OUT’ port to handle Ethernet plus 485 serial communications,
and will be the starting point for the controller LAN.
Connect the ‘OUT’ port in the first controller to the ‘IN’ of the
second controller using a patch cord.

 If an imVision controller is in the middle of the controller

LAN, set both Buttons to ‘left out’.
 If an imVision controller is in the last position in the
controller LAN, set the ‘IN’ Button to ‘left out’, and the
‘OUT’ Button to ‘pushed in’. This makes Port B the
Ethernet Termination Point and tells the iPatch LAN that
no more controllers are connected.
If you have a single rack zone with just one imVision
controller, set both Buttons to ‘pushed in’ and use A for LAN
connection and leave B empty.

Install remainder of panels

The next step is to mount the iPatch panels and connect them
to the panel bus with the jumper cables. Remember that these
panels are unpopulated with structured cabling at this point so
ensure you route the bus cables neatly and as close to the rack
or frame as possible, so they won’t get disturbed by the cabling
engineers.

Power on Controller

Because the display unit in an imVision controller has no flash

memory of its own, the base unit must load firmware onto the
display unit each time the imVision controller powers up. After
that, both base unit and display will boot Linux. Note that
under normal circumstances, it will take nearly 3 minutes
before the initializing legend is displayed. When finished you
will be presented with one of two screens.

If the screen on the left appears we detail the process in the

following pages. If the screen on the right appears follow the
screen instructions to ‘order’ the panels. ‘Ordering’ the panels
in a rack allows the controller to know where each panel is. If
you have multiple connections to the bus cable, ordering
identifies the position of each panel or shelf in the rack from
top to bottom. Even though the panels may not be terminated
with copper or fiber cabling at this stage, it provides a sanity
check to be made that all ports are working correctly.

Powering on the Controller

Checking for LAN connection

Remember to check that the dip switches are in the correct

position on the back of the controllers at this stage. If you do
not have access to the internet at this time all the panels can
still be programed in the rack.

Orange light should Green light

not be showing if a indicates Ethernet
single rack installation activity

Orange lights should Green light

be on if more than one indicates Ethernet
controller linked activity

This check for LAN Connection will normally be carried out

once all the cabling is installed. Skip this section if you are
wanting to just check continuity of the panels, but remember to
do it before handing the installation over. Where an imVision
controller is installed and powered up, the two LEDs next to
each RJ45 port in the rear of the imVision controllers help
identify the position of the ‘port switch’ button in case it is not
easy to see.
If the button is ‘pushed in’, which enables the Ethernet
function, this will cause the Ethernet port activity green LED to
blink when connected to a switch. This is the LED located to
the right of each port. If the button is ‘left out’, which enables
Controller LAN/dual protocol function, this will cause the
amber LED to turn on. This is the LED on the left.

Once the controllers have finished initializing, they should all
display a consecutive Rack number, starting with the first

If the numbering in the racks is not what you expected, you
may want to review the configuration of the ‘IN’ and ‘OUT’
ports of the imVision controllers as well as the cabling from
one iPatch controller to the next.
The controllers will also display the following message:
“Program Order of iPatch Equipment in the Rack”. This is the
next step to perform. To program the order of the panels in the
rack, start from the top and moving downwards push any port
button in each panel. If the panel is a 48 port copper panel,
push one button in each of the two rows.
If you have a G2 HD shelf, push one button in each module,
starting from the left and moving to the right. If at any point the
process becomes disrupted or if an error is made in the
sequence, the process can be repeated from the beginning by
choosing “Start Over” on the controller’s touch-screen.

Installing the Other Equipment

Once you have finished ordering the iPatch panels, the next
step is to install all the other non-iPatch equipment, like generic
panels, network equipment, patch cord organizers, etc., in the
rack.

When doing this, follow each vendor’s instructions.

At this point, you are ready to terminate all cabling to the back
of your panels.
To make it easier to terminate cabling, you may disconnect the
power adapter plug from the POWER jack on the back of the
Panel Manager.
When you have finished cabling the equipment, be sure to
connect the power plug again and route the power adapter
cord through the strain relief.

360 iPatch Implementation Strategies

The SYSTIMAX 360 Solution offers customers three choices to

get started on the road to intelligence. Those customers ready
to deploy intelligence today can deploy the iPatch intelligent
infrastructure solution including factory-assembled intelligent
panels, Panel Managers and System Manager software.

Customers who don’t want or can’t install a fully-intelligent

infrastructure from the beginning can choose to deploy an
intelligence-enabled infrastructure. This includes factory-
assembled iPatch panels without the panel managers and
software. In the future, such a customer can migrate to fully
intelligent network by adding Panel Managers and System
Manager software.

Last, the intelligence-ready infrastructure offers a path to

intelligence for those customers who are not ready today, or
are not yet sure if they will need intelligence, but want to keep
their options open. This means installing SYSTIMAX 360
“iPatch-ready” panels. These panels can be upgraded in the
future. In this case, customers begin with a non-intelligent but
“ready” infrastructure. And, when the moment comes, they
install the iPatch Upgrade kits, add Panel Managers and
System Manager software, and enjoy the benefits of a fully-
intelligent network without having to cause any network
disruptions.

With these three options, made possible by the SYSTIMAX 360

Solution, our customers will have the flexibility to enjoy the
benefits of intelligence at a time that best meets their needs.

360 iPatch Ready Upgrade Copper

As explained in previous lessons, iPatch kits are available to

upgrade different types of SYSTIMAX 360 panels into
“intelligent panels”.
They are:

1. The iPatch Upgrade kit for the SYSTIMAX 360 Evolve

1100 24 or 48-port copper panel and
2. The iPatch Upgrade Kit for the SYSTIMAX 360 G2 1U
Fiber shelf with LC modules
Copper panels are ordered as 360-iP-UP-KIT-1100-24 or -48 and
Fiber 360-iP-UP-KIT-G2-LC

All SYSTIMAX 360 Evolve 1100 panels are ‘iPatch Ready’.
So let’s start with how to install an iPatch Upgrade kit on a
SYSTIMAX 360 24-port copper panel with multiple patch cords
in place.
The procedure is very simple, and consists of 3 steps.

To upgrade:
Step 1: remove plastic label strips on modules
Step 2: mount the upgrade kit
Step 3: attach and route the bus cable

Let’s see this in detail using in the next few graphics.

360 iPatch Ready Upgrade – Copper

The first step is to remove and discard the grey labels from the
fronts of the modules in the SYSTIMAX 360 Evolve panels. This
is shown here, in the sequence of pictures. You can see the
installer is using the standard SYSTIMAX spudger tool to assist
this process.

The second step is to mount the upgrade kit and attach the
panel bus ribbon cable to it.
To do this, feed the smaller end of the ribbon cable through the
slot on the left hand end of the panel with the smooth side of
the mini connector on top.

Connect this to the iPatch upgrade strip then locate the strip
into the rectangular holes along the panel . Slide the strip
towards the left-hand side of the panel ensuring all three lugs
have located and the ribbon cable is running back through the
cable slot without being trapped.

The ribbon cable must be secured to the panel using the

adhesive cable clip retainer that comes as part of the upgrade
kit. Ensure it does not get folded the wrong way or become
entangled in the cable management bar.

The decorative bezel can now be replaced.

Connect the bus cable to the panel bus and seat the retainer.

This completes the copper upgrade procedure.

360 iPatch Ready Upgrade – Fiber

All SYSTIMAX 360 G2 1U LC shelves are iPatch ready. Note:-

only LC shelves not SC or ST versions.

As this shelf has been available for several years, it is important
to check that it has the most recent type of cassettes fitted
before attempting the upgrade.

The first step is to open the front door of the shelf and remove
it. If the shelf is sliding, pull it out, or if fixed you may need to
loosen it in the rack or cabinet to gain access to the tray.

360 iPatch Ready Upgrade – Fiber

Remove hinged dust covers if still fitted but do not remove

fiber patchcords.

If InstaPATCH modules are fitted carefully remove the

Alpha/Beta orientation plastic surrounds.

Upgrade kits come with colored labels to match the fiber type
used in the shelf. If you intend to use these, apply the labels
now or alternatively ensure that the ports are labeled the same
as the original shelf.

So now you are ready to upgrade the panel. With the upgrade
kit you will have found a bag of parts including some
corrugated tubing, corrugated tube retaining clips and ribbon
cable retainers.

Having removed the lid or cover of the fiber shelf, fix the
ribbon cable retainers as shown. Fit one almost in line with the
center of the shelf, the next in-line with it towards the exit
position and the third on the outside of the shelf runner. Fit the
two tube retainer clips in the positions shown below. Put one
just outside the rear cable exit of the shelf on the inside of the
slide runner and the other on the outside on the far end of the
slide runner. Lay the ribbon cable on the shelf as shown below,
running up through the middle but ensure the red stripe is on
the left edge looking at the front of the shelf.
Feed the ribbon cable into the split corrugated tube and
position the tubing so that about 1 inch (2.5cm) extends past
the end of the tube retainer clip. There is plenty of spare length
in the ribbon cable so do not cut the tube but use the full length
supplied. Make sure the tubing is positioned so that it protects
the portion of the panel bus jumper routed around the end of
the sliding rail. See the pictures below. If necessary push the
panel in and out to make sure that the tubing is not obstructed.

Align the iPatch Ready Upgrade Kit with the front of the
panel, arranging the patch cords as required. Each side of the
overlay is ‘H’ shaped allowing it to be offered up to the front of
the shelf. Connect the panel bus jumper to the back and gently
locate the overlay up against the metalwork. You may need
some nimble fingers to do this.

NOTE:- Make sure the overlay is completely flush with the
front of the shelf before attempting to tighten the screws using
a T10 Torx driver. Dress the ribbon cable down inside the shelf
ensuring it is neat. Replace the perspex lid. The dustcovers
cannot be refitted now, so discard them.

Finally, position the kit around the fiber adapters and secure it
to the front panel using a screwdriver. Insert the jumper to the
panel bus at the rear, and secure the retainer. Close the door.
This completes the upgrade. Your panel is now intelligent!
