COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is a beginning level and an introductory class of four sequential Korean studies. It is
designed for the students who have no experience or had little knowledge about Korean. Students
are expected to learn skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) of Korean language and to be
familiarized to its grammar and comprehension skills. No prerequisite is necessary for this course.
Basic knowledge of Korean grammar, vocabulary, expressions and cultural points will be given
during the lecture.
The objectives also include enhancing understanding of historical and cultural aspects through
various activities and field trip. Students are expected to preview and review class materials
before participating the class. Students are encouraged to use only Korean in discussion for
improvement in Korean. A cultural event or a field trip will be instructed during this semester and
further details about final presentation will be given toward the end of the semester.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The goal of this course is to master basic grammar, conversation and reading comprehension skills.
By the end of the semester, students are expected to have oral presentation and written
statements about the topics related to Korean culture and assigned subjects.
Students are expected to be responsible to study prior to class and submit assignments on time in
order to reach the goal in this course.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS

1. Preparatory work and review at home:
Students are expected to prepare well for every class and review on their own, following their professor’s
directions.

2. Attending every class, being on time, and participating actively:
Attending class and participating actively are also essential to learning. Students should therefore attend
every class, participate actively, and be on time.

3. Submit class works and home works in timely manners.

* Please be advised that more than three (3) absences will affect your final grade.
- Cell Phone Use and Text-messaging are NOT Allowed in Class.
- A record of attendance will be kept. Students are required to arrive to class on time.
GRADES

• Attendance / Participation and progress: 20%
Regular class attendance and active participation are critical to language learning. The
instructors will give daily grade based on a student’s participation and performance to
create better learning environment. If a student is absent, she/he will get 0 point, and if
absence is excused, s/he will get ‘E’ for that day’s attendance grade and it won’t affect the
grade. Absence will be excused under these conditions: 1) job interview with verification,
2) official University activities with verification, or 3) religious holidays. Students should
notify me of these conditions at least 24 hours in advance: The last-minute notice will not
be honored. Missing a class more than 15 minutes will be counted as an absence.

• Homework/ Assignment: Weekly Assignment: 15%


Homework assignments will include online activities and other exercises
assigned by the instructor. Students will be expected to read weekly passages
and study vocabularies and grammar prior to classes.

• Quiz: 5 times: 15%

• Field trip: 5% Participation+ Report: Class will be going on a field trip (Sep 21) and a field
trip report will be due on Sep 24.

• Korean Movie Day (Sep 12) and a report due on Sep 24: Pass or Fail

• Midterm: 20%

• Final Project: Oral Presentation/Interview + Written statement: 25%
- Students are expected to follow the criteria and instruction for the projects.
- Students must submit a final statement on due date after meeting with the instructor. Presentation
guideline related to topics and detailed instructions will be provided.


Final Grade General Frame Lines

Grade A
-Always well-prepared, participates actively.
- Uses full sentences in responses to questions as often as possible
- Asks questions, makes the most of each group’s activity with his/her partner.


Grade B
- Usually well-prepared, often participates but sometimes needs to be called upon
- Usually speaks in Korean but quickly switches to English if encountering difficulty
- Asks questions and completes each group activity as required, without pursuing
further
- Occasionally speaks in full sentences

Grade C
- Often not prepared for class, participates minimally and not spontaneously
- Quickly resorts to English and does not try to speak Korean unless supervised
- Rarely speaks in full sentences or asks questions


Grade D
-Frequent Absences and/or tardiness
-Participates minimally, usually only when called upon
-Relies primarily on English and only uses Korean when directly prompted
-Korean utterances are not typically complete sentences

Grade F
- Not prepared, often late, or absent
- Unable to speak Korean even when called upon
