POST GRADUATE PROGRAMME IN MANAGEMENT

Academic Year 2018-2019 | Term VI

Advanced Operations Management: Theory of Constraints
Credits: One
Course instructor: Prof. Mahesh Gupta
Email: mahesh.gupta@louisville.edu Phone: 1-502-876 0446
Consultation hours: TBD
Course Introduction:
The Theory of Constraints (TOC) suggests that managers should focus on the few limiting
factors, popularly called constraints, to improve organizational performance. In this course, we
will learn TOC principles and concepts – mindset, measurements, and methodology (3Ms) – for
improving operations continuously and using it to build sustainable competitive advantage.

Course Objectives:
The goal of this course is to significantly enhance managers’ ability to analyze and solve practical
operations management problems encountered in their businesses by applying principles and
concepts of TOC. On the completion of this module, student should be able to:
 Explain the throughput-world thinking paradigm of TOC – TOC measures
(Throughput Inventory and Operating Expenses) and discuss its relationship with
conventional financial measures of net profit, return-on-investment.
 Explain the logistical paradigm of TOC – the Process of Ongoing Improvement (also
known as five focusing steps of TOC)
 Apply and describe 3Ms of TOC in the context of real-world applications and explain
how TOC can be used to integrate business functional areas.
 Explain the relationship of TOC with often seen competing process improvement
philosophies such as Lean and Six Sigma towards the development of an integrative
TLS framework

Pedagogy:
Class sessions will be primarily discussion-oriented supplemented by lectures. The course introduces the
Theory of Constraints in a logical and easy to digest form. Topics are discussed in simple every day
applications and then applied to harder problems. Students successively gain skills in new areas while at
the same time build on skills presented previously.
