Steady-State Heat Conduction with Internal Heat Source

1. A plane wall 7.5 cm thick generates heat internally at the rate of 0.35 MW/m3. One side of the
wall is insulated, and the other side is exposed to an environment at 93 C. The convective heat
transfer coefficient between the wall and the environment is 570 W/m2.K. The thermal
conductivity of wall is 21 W/m.K. Calculate the maximum temperature in the wall.

2. A 30 cm thick plate has heat generated uniformly at the rate of 5×105 W/m3. One side of the
plate is maintained at 200 C and the other at 50 C. Calculate the temperature at the center of
the plate and the maximum temperature.

3. A plane wall of thickness L, thermal conductivity K has its surface at x=0 insulated and the
other surface at X=L is kept at zero temperature. Heat generated within the wall at a rate of
x
g ( x)  g o cos W / m3
2L
Where go is the heat generate per unit volume at x=0.
a) Develop an expression for one-dimensional, steady-state temperature distribution in the
wall.
b) Develop an expression for the temperature of the insulated surface.

4. Consider the shielding wall for a nuclear. The wall receives a gamma-ray flux such that heat is
generated within the wall according to the relation:

q  qoe ax
Where, qo is the heat generation at the inner face of the wall exposed to the gamma-ray flux and (a)
is a constant. Using this relation for heat generation, derive an expression for the temperature
distribution in a wall of thickness (L), where the inside and outside temperatures are maintained at
Ti and To respectively. Also obtain an expression for the maximum temperature in the wall.

5. A long cylindrical rod of radius 5 cm, K=10 W/m.K contains radioactive material which
generates heat uniformly within the cylinder at a constant rate of q v= 3×105 W/m3. The rod is
cooled by convection from its outer surface into the ambient air at 50 C with a heat transfer
1
coefficient of 60 W/m2.K. Determine the temperature at the center of the rod and the outer
surface.
.
6. A current of 200 A is passed through a stainless-steel wire (k = 19 W/m.K) and 3 mm diameter.
The resistivity of steel may be taken as 70 μΩ.cm, and the length of wire is 1 m. the wire is
submerged in a liquid at 110 C and experiences a convective heat transfer coefficient of 4
kW/m2.K. Calculate the center temperature of the wire.
If the heater wire is submerged in another fluid maintained at 93 C, the convective heat transfer
film is coefficient is 5.7 kW/m2.K, determine the center temperature of the wire.

7. In a cylindrical fuel element for a gas-cooled nuclear reactor, the heat generation rate is given
by:

 r 
qv  qvo 1  ( )2  W / m 3 .
 R 
Where R is the radius of the element and qvo is constants the boundary surface at r=R is maintained
at a uniform temperature To.
a) Develop an expression for the temperature drop from the center line to the surface of the
element.
b) For radius R=2 cm, thermal conductivity K=10 W/m.K and qvo=4×107 W/m3. Calculate the
temperature drop from the center line to the surface.
