EXPECTATIONS/RULES: BE RESPECTFUL:

 BE RESPECTFUL OF ALL students, the art room, the supplies and the instructor😊

 Being respectful means - NO throwing clay, ALWAYS leaving your work area, chair, counter,
glaze table, potter’s wheel, tools and all items you used clean.

 Being respectful means - never to endanger yourself or other students by horsing around
(running, wrestling, jumping) and or using tools for anything other then what their intended
use.

 FYI - Not following these safety expectations may result in being transferred out of ceramics.
It takes a certain amount of maturity to be able to work with clay.

OBJECTIVES - WHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN THIS SEMESTER:

 Learn a variety of hand building techniques such as; slab, coil, pinch.
 Learn how to work on the potter's wheel.
 Complete projects ON TIME demonstrating creativity and GOOD craftsmanship.
 Take part in keeping the classroom, tools, tables, sinks & counters and wheels clean.

 Craftsmanship & use of project techniques
 Creativity and Visual Impact (ceramics 2 and advanced ceramics only)
 20% for Ceramics 1 / 2 & for Advanced ceramics - Assessments - Quizzes and a demonstration of
practiced and learned techniques.
 10% on Written Final Exam AND final Oral Presentation (only for Ceramic 1)
 10% for Digital Portfolio (PowerPoint presentation) for Ceramics 2 and Advanced Ceramics)
RECEIVING A GRADE:
 Student’s FIRST NAME AND LAST NAME INITIAL OR FIRST NAME INITIAL AND LAST NAME AND
PERIOD must be carved into the bottom of each pottery project before it is handed in as Green-ware. No
credit/grade can be given if this important step is missed. The reason is that once a clay piece is fired (the
drying and firing process can take up to 2-3 weeks) it is often only identified by a student’s name. Many
projects can look similar and this eliminates students mistakenly claiming another students work for their
own. Remember that No exceptions will be made if students forget this important step.
POTTERY LOG:
 Pottery Logs are pocket folders that are given to each student and put together during class.
 A Pottery Log has a Semester Project list in it, Syllabus, Grading Rubrics, and Design sheets for
sketches and written directions.
 Pottery Logs are required to be kept in the ceramic room and used in class. At the end of each class
Pottery Logs should be put back in student’s lockers.
 Pottery Logs should never be taken home until the end of the semester. It is a record of students
work and is used to grade every project and enables students to design and work on pre-project
planning.
 REMEMBER - All completed fired ceramic projects will be graded using the rubrics that are in the
pottery log. When students turn in their ceramic projects on the grading cart they will be turned in
with their pottery log.

TURN IN WORK POLICY:

 Projects not turned in by the due date will result in an automatic zero.
 Deadline to turn in all missing work will be 2 weeks prior to the end of the semester.
 If a student is ABSENT - it is important that they make arrangements to attend open studio time and
complete their work in a timely manner. (Clay projects dry out when worked on too long and can result in
broken parts that are difficult to repair) - IT IS IMPERATIVE FOR YOUR SUCCESS THAT YOU STAY
ON TRACK WITH ASSIGNMENTS AND THE DUE DATES.
 All students who receive below a B on a quiz may retake the quiz during GRIZ ONLY for a better grade,
BUT must be taken before the last 2 weeks of the semester.
