Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Can I open CATAnalysis documents saved in previous/earlier releases of CATIA?
Answer: Previously saved CATAnalysis databases can be opened but composite and orthotropic
properties may need to be redefined.

Question: Why are the transmitted DOF for RBE3 properties not getting exported properly?
Answer: As of SimDesigner 2005 for CATIA V5R14, the RBE3 property, or ‘smooth property’, was
enhanced to properly include transmitted degrees of freedom on the RBE3 card. For databases created
by earlier versions, you must validate the RBE3 property by double-clicking on it, re-selecting the DOF
and clicking OK.

Question: I cannot get my licensing to work. What could be the problem?

Answer: Starting with the release of SimDesigner R4 for CATIA V5R18 and V5R19, you must upgrade
to and use FLEXlm v11.6.0 license server tools.

Question: Why do I see negative Element IDs?

Answer: Integer values are used to store the element IDs which allows a maximum value of
2,147,483,647 - if that value is exceeded, the element IDs will be negative. It should be noted that
unassigned mesh part IDs will start after the highest assigned mesh part IDs.

Question: Why are stress values for Shell elements different between SimDesigner for CATIA V5
and CATIA GPS?
Answer: The values can be different because SimDesigner for CATIA V5 uses the Global axis system
while CATIA GPS uses a Local axis system.

Question: How can I perform solver-specific checks?

Answer: MD Nastran-specific checks are performed using SD Model Checker, so any elements causing
a fatal error can be pinpointed for further mesh modifications. A generic quality check can be performed
using CATIA V5 FMS.

Question: After I set up the loads and boundary conditions and clicked on the "Compute" button,
CATIA came back with a "Singularity detected (relative pivot too small)". What went wrong?
Chapter 1: Release Notes 9
Frequently Asked Questions

Answer: Selecting “All” on “Compute” will run all the available cases in the specification tree. And it is
likely that you have a case with no Restraints defined or incomplete boundary conditions. Delete that case
and then rerun by selecting “Analysis Case Solution Selection,” and click on the SimDesigner Case
Solution you wanted to run.

Question: In SimDesigner Thermal workbench, and for shell element parts, why is the part not
being meshed and assigned with material properties?
Answer: For shell element parts, part bodies must be children of the main part in order to mesh and assign
material properties. If this is not the case, use the Change Body command in your part file to move it.

Question: Why am I not able to compute after I export a solver input file?
Answer: The case gets updated after export. To recompute, use “Force Compute”.

Question: Why do I see different Von Mises values from the Image toolbar icon versus the Camera
icon?
Answer: The Image icon shows raw data from the external solvers - whereas the Camera icon data is
derived from a calculation done in SimDesigner.

Question: How do I modify the Scratch directory setting specified during installation?
Answer: By using the SimDesigner Storage Manager facility.

Question: How can I change the default External Storage Directory setting?
Answer: By changing the CATTemp setting in the SimDesigner environment file (<install_dir>\v5ienv\).
It can also be changed for each SimDesigner session by using the Storage Manager facility from within
SimDesigner.

Question: Why doesn’t SimDesigner for CATIA V5 recognize the CATSettings' modifications I
did?
Answer: SimDesigner CATSettings are based on the default CATIA settings. To change the settings
specific to SimDesigner, modify the SimDesigner environment file (<install_dir>\v5ienv\).

Question: When I run an MD Nastran analysis with the Gateway Analysis Manager (GAM), it fails,
why?
10 Release Guide
Frequently Asked Questions

Answer: A common reason is the licensing - during the installation process, the auto-configuration for
GAM will pick up SimDesigner-specific versions of MD Nastran and Marc. Make sure the correct
version number is specified in the SimDesigner Solution Parameters dialog.

Question: When the Gateway Analysis Manager services are not running, after selecting Setup
Batch, why does it take a while for the setup batch to respond with a message?
Answer: In such a case, services need to be started manually. Please refer to the SimDesigner Installation
Guide for information concerning the configuration of the Gateway Analysis Manager.

Question: What causes batch job submission to fail with a job ID of zero?
Answer: When defining a new job, ensure that the name of the input file and its location does not contain
any spaces.

Question: How can I include multiple load cases in one bulk data file for MD Nastran?
Answer: Use the Restraint Set/LoadSet and Combined LoadSet icons available in the SimDesigner
toolbar.

Question: Does SimDesigner use the Computations and Results link seen in the Analysis Manager
spec tree?
Answer: The Computations and Results link (CATAnalysisComputations and CATAnalysisResults file)
is not relevant for SimDesigner products.
Question: Where can I find information about SimDesigner for CATIA V5 online documentation?
Answer: The SimDesigner for CATIA V5 online documentation (PDF and HTML) is located in:
<install_dir>/Documentation

Question: When I look through the SimDesigner Structures Nonlinear Workbench Solution
Parameters, and click OK without changing any settings, the solution case gets inactivated.
Answer: Click Cancel if you plan on not changing any parameters.

Question: How are the external CATAnalysis files managed in SimDesigner?

Answer: By using the Storage Manager within SimDesigner. Their location can be modified in the
scratch directory settings. An HTML browser is used for UNIX platforms and Notepad for windows
platforms.
Chapter 1: Release Notes 11
Frequently Asked Questions

Question: When using SimDesigner Thermal workbench and SimDesigner Structures Nonlinear
workbench, why are my images unclear?
Answer: For proper display, the mesh needs to be hidden using the contextual hide/show command.

Question: Why can't I find the SD Temp Dependency option when I right-click on thermal
material?
Answer: You may not be in the SimDesigner Thermal workbench.

Question: Why is the scratch directory and results directory greyed out in GAM?
Answer: The scratch dir in “setup batch” is not used currently and the results directory is for information
only.

Question: Whenever I click on the “Expert Gateway” icon, sometimes I get a message: “Unable to
initialize and start GAM. Check QueMgr and RmtMgr services. Check GAM installation.” Why?
Answer: There are two possibilities:
1. This error message usually appears when the GAM remote manager does not respond within a
minute. In such a case, contact your system administrator to ensure speedier network access.
2. If it takes a while to respond back with a similar message, it is possible that the MSCQueMgr
services may not have been started.

Question: After I submitted my job in batch, when I click on “Check Job”, why do I see the job in
queue for a long time?
Answer: Check if the MSCRmtMgr service is running. If not, it is normal to see this message. Now, if
you close the setup batch window and reopen it to check the job status, you may see a message: “Unable
to reach host. Check Host and configuration service”. In this case, restart the MSCRmtMgr service. See
the GAM configuration section in the Installation Guide for details.

Question: After I submit a job, I see a “Job Failed” message when I check the status. How do I fix
this?
Answer: A log file should be available for viewing. In the GAM Setup Batch dialog, click on the Browse
button and select the stderr file for your job and then click on the View Log File button to view the file.
Based on the error messages, consult the relevant solver documentation for resolution. Usually, it is a
licensing issue - either there is no valid license or the licensing declaration is not done properly.
12 Release Guide
Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Sometimes, when I import large MD Nastran bulk data files, I get a “command
interrupted” and a “full memory address space condition” message and nothing is imported. How
do I import such files?
Answer: As the current buffer size is not enough to read large files, the NIFIMP_BUFFER_SIZE variable
should be increased to a higher value. This variable can be defined in the SimDesigner environment file
or as an env variable in the windows control panel.
Chapter 1: Release Notes 13
Limitations

Limitations

Structures Workbench:
• In this release, when you export a case to a solver deck, any result attached to the solution set of
that case will be detached. If you just want to see the deck, click on the storage manager next to
the compute command and select the deck for viewing.
• (1-19897181) SimDesigner session may hang during the import of an XDB file that contains
6000 or more bar/beam elements that share the same pair of nodes.
• When exporting MD Nastran bulk data file via Gateway for MD Nastran, Beam properties,
dynamic load combinations, and restraints set combinations (i.e. PBEAML/PBEAM, DLOAD,
and SPCADD) are always written in single precision.
• (1-45050025) In a SimDesigner Dynamic case, the displacement plot in the xy-plotter would
only show the real component. The imaginary component and the overall magnitudes would be
available in future releases.
• (1-48641401) "Compute All" command fails to run a complete coupled thermal analysis after
modification is made to a part.
• The workaround is:
After modification is made to the part, first update the mesh independently. Then you can run
"Compute All."
• (1-20173031) RECL Value entered in Tools/Options does not go into effect immediately for
simulations computed in SimDesigner. But does immediately work for exported Nastran decks.
• Suggested workaround is to export a deck first, and then new RECL value will be in effect for
internally computed simulations.
• (1-57704631) Rigid body does not move during post-processing for nonlinear simulations.
• (1-72314861) When the SimDesigner scratch directory in tools/options is defined as the root
directory (C:\), then results for nonlinear solutions do not get attached correctly.
• Suggested workaround is to not define C:\ as the scratch directory.

Motion Workbench:
• Flex body animation limitations are as follows:
• When you animate multiple flexible parts, CATIA will superimpose the color maps from the
CATAnalysis documents. You can select each color map individually and drag it to another
location.
• To ensure a constant stress range for each color in the color map during an animation, you can
impose maximum and minimum stress values on the color map in the CATAnalysis
document.
• (1-49262211) Animation along with simulation of a flexible body does not show any change in
stress contours.
14 Release Guide
Limitations

This is on AIX only for Motion Workbench.

• The workaround is:
Change window to the CATAnalysis document
Select the import results command
Import the transient XDB file that was created during the motion animation step.

Note: The location of the transient XDB file can be found by opening the Storage
Manager command in the SimDesigner Structure Workbench. The transient XDB
file will have a long filename in the format of:

<timestamp>_<resultname>_<timestamp>.xdb

Example:

2007_01_22_11_17_19_Results_1_2007022t111854.xdb

• (1-45190201) When preparing FEA model for modal analysis used for flexible bodies, the
virtual part independent nodes of RBE spiders are not being placed at the handler point (joint
location). Instead independent node is being placed in another location (ex. center of a cylinder).
• Suggested workaround is to edit virtual part and manually redefine the handler point. This will
then result in the correct RBE definition.
• (1-250536154) When changing a part or assembly property such as material, the SimDesigner
Motion mechanism does not detect such a change automatically. To force an update, use the
'Update' button on the SimDesigner Motion toolbar.

Nonlinear Workbench:
• In a SimDesigner Nonlinear solution case, when more than two contact bodies are initially in
contact along a common edge, the Marc solution may fail.

Analysis Manager / Expert Gateway:

• If, during the installation of Analysis Manager 2005r8, the SimDesigner embedded MD Nastran
and Marc solvers are selected, the MD Nastran and Marc paths have to be changed afterwards to
point to the proper solver. This is done in the configuration file:
<..>\MSC.Analysis_Manager\2005r8\default\conf\host.cfg
See the Installation Guide for the correct format.
• In setting up the GAM configuration file, host.cfg, if "NONE" were used in place of the rc file,
then a global environment variable, MSC_LICENSE_FILE, must be set to point to the proper
MD Nastran license.
