Job vs. Work
 Job: paid work
 Work: labor (paid or unpaid)

Definitions of Work
 Physics: Displacement
 Business: Mental or physical effort in order to achieve a purpose
 Church:
o “A sustained human activity done for a purpose. Work can be
manual or intellectual, paid or not paid, light or heavy.”
- Laborem Exercens (Through Work). St. JPII, 1981
o “tilling the soil” – Genesis 2:5
(meaning to prepare soil for planting/ creating opportunities for
people to work)
o Human work therefore, is more than an activity or a commodity,
but an essential part of our human nature. It’s a fulfillment of our
being human. It’s a spiritual participation in God’s creative work.
o “Work is a good thing for man – a good thing for his humanity –
because through work, man not only transforms nature, adapting it
to his own needs, but he also achieves fulfillment as a human
being…”
 Work is a sacred duty, which fulfills the ff:
o Earning a living and providing for material needs
o Expressing and developing ourselves as unique creatures of God
o Serving our community
 Work vs Slavery
o Work is a free act

Dimensions of Work
 Objective Dimension: refers to the output or product of human work
 Subjective Dimension: the primary basis for determining the value of
human work is not the kind of work done but the agents who are working
are human persons (workers); disputes the importance of capital over
labor and workers

 In the hierarchy of commodities, products are less important than
services.

Expressions of the Subjective Dimension of Work


1. Human persons are the purpose of work.
2. Work is for the common good.
3. Labor is more important than capital.

Relation of Work with Jesus


 Jesus was a carpenter
 Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist
o At mass, we unite the fruit of our human work with the sacrificial
work of Jesus Christ

Virtue of Munificence
 lavish generosity (which is bad)
 e.g. parents spoiling their children to the point that they don’t teach them
to work anymore
 Teach a person how to fish, NOT keep on providing the fish for that
person (munificence)

Solidarity with the Worker


1. Direct Employer: employee and employer enter directly into a work
contract
2. Indirect Employer: actions affect or influence other workers (e.g.
preference for local products)

 No. It’s ok as long as it is for the common good and it follows the

 Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving
 40-day preparation for the celebration of the core of our faith – the
resurrection of Jesus
 This season leads us to be ready for the celebration of Easter Sunday

- One may not have a job or a career, but one will always have a vocation
- We are called to love in whatever career

2. The Religious State (nuns, brothers)
3. The Clerical State (priests, bishops)

What is discernment?
- It is not choosing between bad or good, rather it is choosing between two
goods, which is more difficult
- To find one’s place in the greater scheme of things
- Entails listening to yourself and to God in His Word, in prayer, in silence
- One may seek a spiritual director to aid in discerning
