DRAWING AND PAINTING A SYLLABUS 2018-19

EXPECTATIONS/RULE: BE RESPECTFUL:
 Of other students, the art room, the supplies and the instructor😊

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will:


 Refine technical drawing, painting, and composition skills and build on their foundation learned
in Drawing and Design.
 Learn how to use new materials, focusing on acrylic, and mixed media.
 Focus on creating original art works.
 Learn about different artists past and present and why they are important to the art world.

ART MATERIALS: All art materials will be provided for students

GRADING: GRADES ARE WEIGHTED


 Projects are worth 75% of a student’s grade and are graded on the following:
 Completeness in meeting project objectives.
 Craftsmanship & use of project techniques
 Quiz’s Critiques and presentations are worth 25%.
 Students are graded on the Idaho Visual Art Standards, Creating, Producing, Responding & Connecting.
RUBRIC:

 Each project is accompanied with a project specific grading rubric. My rubrics are designed to
give directions/outline of the project criteria. Rubrics outline the categories students will be
graded on. Rubrics need to be turned in with each project. Each student receives a rubric at the
beginning of the project so if lost, students can print a new rubric from my school website.

TURN IN POLICY:
 Students are given the opportunity to correct ALL work anytime during the semester.
 Deadline to turn in all missing and corrected work will be 2 weeks prior to the end of the
semester.
 Final Deadline for corrected or late work will be announced and posted on the board.
 Projects not turned in by the due date will result in a zero AND ONLY ALLOWED TO BE
TURNED IN IF STUDENTS HAVE COMPLETED THE FOLLOWING:
1. SKETCHES AND PEER EDITING/FEEDBACK FROM INSTRUCTOR PRIOR TO BEGINNING
2. TECHNICAL SKILLS PRACTICE AND QUIZ
SCHOOL APPROPRIATE SUBJECT MATTER requires all students to stay within the
guidelines set by the district. This means no violence or drug related subject matter. Use good
judgment when choosing your subject matter!

ELECTRONICS: Cell phones MAY NOT BE USED - Please keep them in the phone vault unless
otherwise specified.
GRIZ PERIOD
Students with a failing grade will be invited to attend Griz on M, T, Th, F - 7:20-7:40.
OPEN STUDIO HOURS: EVERY MONDAY 3-5PM
CONTACTING PARTENTS:
I’m an advocate of contacting parents/guardians if I have concerns about any of my student's
grades, behavior etc. See Discipline Policy in the classroom expectations for the complete rules.

SEMESTER PROJECT/ASSIGNMENTS
 Digital Portfolio – Power Point Created During the Semester & Presented to the class on
Final day
 Bell Ringer Art History - Learning about different artists and their works of art. 5 minutes EACH
DAY at the beginning of class😊
 BEFORE BEGINNING a project the following needs to happen:
1. ALL PROJECTS are required to be PLANNED out well with evidence of at least 2 different
sketches.
2. Completed sketches need to be reviewed by a peer and feedback given.
3. Final chosen sketch needs to be reviewed/discussed with instructor.
4. Technical skill quiz needs to be passed prior to beginning project.

Art Production Focus will be on original compositions/designs in the following areas:

WEEK 1 –3 Introduction – What makes a good composition?


Batik – What is Batik? – Library research / Project – Students will be introduced to the Batik
technique (using hot wax and dyes to create a work of art)
WEEK 3 Sketchbook assignment – Introduce Sketchbook Assignment

WEEK 4-5 Drawing – revisiting contour, varied line and drawing from observation using value.

WEEK 6-9 Acrylic Painting – Bring a shirt to protect your clothing!


a) Painting techniques
b) Impressionism technique practice
c) Impressionism Final painting- students will paint an impressionism style painting with
acrylic paints on canvas.
WEEK 9 SKETCHBOOK ASSIGNMENT - students have 6 weeks to complete
WEEK – 10-12 Observation Drawing Project - Charcoal techniques such as:
 Contour line with a variety of textures AND Line variation (thick & thin)

WEEK 13-15 Color pencil – “Fauvism Portrait" Students will use color pencils (Layering/Blending)

WEEK 16-18 Digital portfolio work time and all corrected and late work is due.
