Public Relations is a year-long course that is open to any student, but upperclassmen are especially encouraged to join. In this course, students will design, create, and write content for Harbor Beach Community Schools social media, including but not limited to the school website (hbpirates.org), Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Students will write for the school newspaper, The Pirate Press, as well as potentially create or work on video announcements. Students will need to analyze public view of the school and portray a positive media presence in all forms. In order to succeed, students should have a strong sense of social media appropriateness, excellent writing skills, a willingness to learn, and enjoy working with others, including peers, students, staff, and community members. Course Expectations: 1. Attend all classes and be on time. If you are going to be absent, it is your responsibility to hand in any due assignments that day via e- mail or else it will be late. 2. I utilize a paper-free classroom. All writings will be shared with or emailed to me at aroggenbuck@hbpirates.org--no paper copies will be handed in. 3. You will be responsible for producing at least one piece per week for whichever site you choose/you have been assigned to work on. On Friday, you will produce a log of what you have completed that week. It should include a short summary of what you did (on each item), where it was published, on which date, and anything else you’d like to add. 4. All late assignments will be graded down by 50%, and no late work will be accepted more than two weeks after an assignment is due. If you are a senior, you must complete all of your work before you graduate. This may mean turning in assignments after your last day of school (May 10). 5. Class participation is a must. Work time is work time--bounce ideas off of me and your peers--that’s why we are here! 6. Cell phone use is acceptable within reason. Using it all the time is not. Please make a responsible choice when you come to class. 7. You may bring your own laptop to class if you would like to use it. Otherwise, you are more than welcome to use one of the four computers in the back of my classroom.
