dissipates an existing charge. These materials have surface resistivity levels between 10 5 and 109
ohms per square.

3.15 Static Sensitive Devices (SSD's)

Any electronic component or assembly that can be damaged by an electrostatic discharge.

3.16 Static Shielding Material

Material which prevents an electrostatic discharge or electrostatic field to pass, penetrate, or
puncture through the material.

3.17 Wrist Strap

A device worn on the wrist that is used to provide a soft ground for personnel.

4.0 Responsibilities and Requirements

4.1 Engineering
Engineering identifies components and assemblies as electrostatically sensitive, and highlights
them as SSD's on the item drawings or component specifications. The Engineering Manager
notifies appropriate departments of all new electrostatically sensitive parts and assemblies.

4.2 Manufacturing/Facilities
Manufacturing/Facilities supplies and maintains infrastructure to meet the needs of this
procedure.

6.0 Procedure

6.1 Facilities
When possible, meet the requirements stated below for areas where SSD's are routinely used
and/or stored.

6.1.1 Air Treatment

Select air treatment equipment to keep area temperature within the range of 60 to 80
degrees Fahrenheit, and relative humidity within the range of 30 to 60 percent.

6.1.2 Floors and Floor Treatment

ESD flooring will be conductive or static dissipative flooring that meets surface
resistivity of between 105 and 109 ohms per square.

6.1.3 Power and Appliances

Employ a standard third wire AC ground connection in AC power receptacles. Make
direct earth ground connections available for ESD related equipment. Use conductive
fixed racks or shelves with a hardwired connection to an earth ground reference point
for the storage and/or sorting of exposed SSD's. Use conductive fixtures, with a path to
an earth ground when feasible, for the transport or storage of exposed SSD's.

6.2 Equipment

6.2.1 ESD Workstations

For workstations that routinely handle SSD's, meet the requirements stated below.

 Clearly identify ESD workstations.

 ESD workstation surfaces will meet specifications for static dissipative material
having a surface resistivity of between 10 5 and 109 ohms per square.
 Provide connection points for wrist straps and other personal grounding
equipment. The total resistance connecting static dissipative work surfaces to earth
ground will be between 0.5 meg ohm and 2 meg ohms.
 Operate the continuous monitors installed on ESD workstations in accordance
with manufacturer's instructions.
 When feasible, provide individual connections to the earth ground to prevent
daisy chaining.
 Maintain ESD workstations in accordance with company operating procedures.

6.2.2 Personal Apparel and Equipment

In areas where static sensitive devices are routinely used, personnel should follow the
requirements stated below.

 In general, use ESD compatible protective smocks, especially at an ESD

workstation.
 Personnel working at ESD workstations must employ the use of ESD wrist
straps and/or smocks.
 Check ESD wrist straps/smocks before handling SSD's. A check at the
beginning of the work shift is preferred.

6.3 Handling and Storage of Static Sensitive Devices

6.3.1 Handling
Inspection will check the custom item drawings or component specification for SSD
status. If the item is a SSD, Materials will ensure proper identification and handling
and, if possible, mark the item as static sensitive in the Dataworks system. All personnel
use proper handling techniques for SSD's and when ESD sensitivity is suspected.

 Use closed conductive containers which meet ESD specifications for conductive
materials when transporting SSD's.
 Open and handle SSD's only at ESD protected areas or ESD workstations, and
only by properly grounded personnel trained in ESD handling techniques.
 Keep SSD's clear of insulator and non-ESD packaging and handling materials
which are prime ESD generators.
 Apply ESD handling procedures to printed circuit boards assemblies (PCBA's)
containing SSD's as well as to assemblies designated as being ESD sensitive.
 No special handling is required for closed product unless so designated.

6.3.2 Storage
Store and transport SSD's in conductive totes with lids or in static shielded bags. Use
ESD warning labels. Static shielding bags containing SSD's will be free of tears or
punctures.

6.4 Monitoring and Requalification

6.4.1 Humidity and Temperature Monitoring

Monitor and record humidity and temperature in designated ESD sensitive areas on a
daily basis, preferrably at the beginning of the shift and after mid-shift break. Keep
values in logs maintained by the department responsible for the area. The logs will
contain the following data:

 Date
 Time A.M.
 % R.H.
 Temp ºF.
 Time P.M.
 % R.H.
 Temp ºF.
 Initials of person who took readings

6.4.2 Requalification of Designated ESD Areas

If area temperature goes out of range or if area relative humidity falls below 30%, take
the following steps:

 Immediately contact facilities to correct the condition.

 Recheck ESD wrist straps.
 Operators check ESD workstations. Removed ESD generating materials.
 Continue work that uses SSD's.
 Continue monitoring area temperature and humidity.

If the area relative humidity reading falls below 20%, take the following steps:

 Repackage exposed SSD's. Stop work on exposed SSD's.

 Immediately contact facilities to correct the condition.
 Recheck ESD wrist straps.
 Operators check ESD workstations. Removed ESD generating materials.
 Continue work which uses SSD's at workstations using ionized air sources.
 Continue monitoring area temperature and humidity.

6.5 Training
Personnel working in an ESD environment must attend a training session on ESD prevention
and SSD handling techniques as a minimum of once per year.
