CRHS wrestlers represent at regatta
CRHS students from the wresting team and members of the Twin Falls community came together to show their support for the Twin Falls Chamber
of Commerce by building boats out of cardboard and racing them around Dierke’s Lake to see who could win this annual event.

Regatta, a term most
typically used to describe
the meeting for boat races.
And surprisingly enough,
many residents of Twin
Falls, including those of the
Canyon Ridge High School
Wrestling Team, took place
in an event such as this in
the recent 2010 summer.
The boys of CRHS gathered
up their cardboard scraps
and headed for Dierke’s
Lake, right here in Twin Falls
on the morning of August
22nd.
The wrestlers took on
the challenge to design and
construct a human muscle
powered boat made
entirely from cardboard,
capable of racing a 200 yard
course three times. There’s
no way of describing how
high the anticipation and
excitement was that hot
day in August unless you
were there to experience it
yourself.

themselves in the zone,
many spectators were
already anticipating the
day’s event. The road
leading down to Shoshone
Falls was experiencing
bumper to bumper traffic
jams and the parking lot at
Dierke’s Lake just wasn’t big
enough to accommodate
all the parking cars. The 35
entered teams had nothing
but a shabby audience; in
fact, almost 500 people
came to cheer on and
show their support for
the competing teams. In
fact, the crowd cheering
on our CRHS wrestlers
brought their crimson and
silver for support and left
a memorable impression
reflecting greatly upon
Canyon Ridge pride. “Over
the summer the wrestlers
really tried to get involved
in many different activities
in order to make a bond
within the boys and build
a better team,” Coach

Pehrson tells when asked
what inspired the boys
to enter the race. Not
only did this event show
how involved our fellow
Riverhawks can be, but it
also went to a greater cause
by raising at least $3,500
to go to the Twin Falls Area
Chamber of Commerce.
Surprisingly enough,
the contestant’s placement
in the race did not
determine their final
standing in the contest.

walked around the park
judging the teams on the
appearance of their boats
and the team’s theme.
Many teams decided to
go with an animal themed
boat, along with dressing
up in quirky outfits and
ridiculous boat names
to catch the judge’s eye.
The boys of Canyon Ridge
however, put together
their cardboard boat in the
shape of a sea monster and
painted it green, putting a
lasting impression on the

So, if you find yourself
wishing you would have
been there to see our
wrestlers in action, fear not,
because more than likely
the cardboard regatta race
will go down as one of the
many new Canyon Ridge
High School traditions.

us that he would imagine
the boys will enter again
next year and how much
they actually enjoyed
themselves in the recent
summer’s race.

music

Am I the only one
who cringes when I hear
what is on the radio in my
friends’ cars? As I listen to
these thoughtless songs
with bad voices singing,
terribly simple guitar and
drum parts (if real people
are even playing them),
and meaningless concepts
in the lyrics, I can’t help but
wonder where the music
world went wrong. The
early nineties seemed to
be the final period of great
music.
I have never been a
fan of grunge rock, and I
still strongly believe that
the birth of this genre was
the beginning of the end
of quality mainstream
music, but even this puts
the biggest bands of today
to shame. Even fans of pop
music, such as Senior, Kelly
Ann Buddecke, admit this.
When asked whether
young musicians are as
talented now as they have
been in the past, even she,
a fan of new music said
simply, “I must admit the
talent level has dropped.”
Pop is now full of hip-
hop and rap, which requires
only one real musician
to rap and a DJ to sit and
watch as the record plays.
Punk rock is possibly the
biggest scam mankind has
ever seen, with its three-
chord, awful-voiced sound.
“I hate punk” says Sage
Baar.
There is a positive
message in all this chaos.

mean? At very least the
public still knows, for the
most part, who needs to be
seen live and who needs to
be ignored.

Fall sports usher in the hope of a winning year

As the 2010 Canyon
Ridge school year opens,
fall sports take center
stage. Beginning practice
long before school started,
players and coaches have
been preparing for a
remarkable second season.
The boys’ soccer team
had an amazing entrance
into the season this year,
destroying Pocatello 6-0,
but as the season has gone
on, the team has struggled
with numerous things.
Canyon Ridge has switched
formations from a 5-3-2, to
a 4-3-3, to a 4-4-2, searching

Residents of Twin Falls
anxiously awaited the open-
ing of the 2010 annual County
Fair. There were many events
and rides this year including
tightrope walkers, The Ball
of Death, game vendors, and
a hypnotist show. The new
rides included Super Loops,
and a new Ferris wheel. Old
favorites returned like the Pi-
rate Ship, the Kamikaze, and
the Zipper. There was some-
thing for everyone at the fair
this year.
Advanced tickets
went on sale for $3. At the
gate, prices were $4. Then
one had the option of buying

Many people go to the
shows to watch others do cra-
zy stuff under hypnosis. Eva
Site (Junior) stated, “It was re-

when she watched the show.
Many also enjoyed
the tight rope walkers. A
group of four men and a six
year old boy took the dan-
gers of tightrope walking and
turned it into an amazing
strong routine with each oth-
er. “You have to watch these
guys! They are amazing. It
gets better as the show goes
on,” stated an excited Kirby
Bridges, Twin Falls resident.
Next to the tightrope
was the Ball of Death, where
motorcyclists take the risk of
driving around in a ball with
up to four bikes competing for
space at a time.
These adventurists take
the dangers of riding mo-
torcycles to the next level.
“These guys are really good
too. I think they get up to four
guys in that ball and it’s really
cool. I’d like to do this some-
day,” Kirby stated about the
Ball of Death.
If you didn’t get to
enjoy the fair this year, stick
around it will be back next
year. Go enjoy the rides, ven-
dors, and events. See the
world’s largest pig or the tini-
est horse; just enjoy the Twin
Falls County Fair.

This year’s PASS room changes

“My goal is to help
kids feel valued so they
value themselves and val-
ue the opportunities they
have”, remarked Mr. Coul-
son, the temporary PASS
room advisor. As the for-
mer director of PALSTEP

The PASS room has
changed immensely over
the summer. It has been
moved downstairs to a
tiny room to the side of
the lunch room. Its small-
er space makes it even
more unattractive to stu-
dents who might visit
throughout the school
year. The new location is
a little tough to find, but
its closeness to the lunch
room makes it easier for
PASS room kids to help
work in the cafeteria.
Some policies at Can-
yon Ridge also changed
over the summer. Three
tardies still equal an ab-
sence and a tardy that
exceeds ten minutes is
counted as an absence.
Four tardies, however,
mean an early Wednes-
day morning detention,
and not showing up
results in a visit to the
PASS room. Eight tardies
in a class result in two

Budget effects around Magic Valley Oil spill progress

The poor economy
is something everyone in
Twin Falls is aware of. Ev-
ery business in the Magic
Valley has been forced to
adjust to the financial crisis
that the United States has
undergone so far. Families
around the Magic Valley
also have to cope with the
higher prices on everything,
especially where school is
concerned.
The budget cuts in
school have dented the ath-
letic funds across Twin Falls.
Every student athlete’s par-
ents have heard the terms
fund raising and spirit pack.
Many kids are involved in
more than one sport, caus-
ing the parents to have to
scrape the bottom of the
barrel to come up with the
mandatory price.
Academic related pric-
es are even soaring as the
school supply lists get lon-
ger and the prices on the
mandatory supplies soar.
Families with more than
one child suffer as the tally
rises with the supplies and
clothes needed for school’s
beginning. The budget ef-
fects are affecting every
school and every family in
the Magic Valley.
Clubs at Canyon Ridge
are also suffering with the
budget cuts. Increased en-
try fees have made it hard
for some students to join.
Many clubs work hard for
charity and with lower bud-
gets, it’s hard to make ends
meet in the club without
intense fund raising. Most
students have to do at least
one or two fund raisers
throughout the school year.
Many of those students find
it hard to fund raise and
still actively participate in
sporting and extracurricu-
lar events while keeping up
with homework and school.
The economy is affect-
ing hard working families,
athletic teams, academic
funds, and clubs at Canyon
Ridge.
Adjustment is tough
but possible is most cases. If
Canyon Ridge students and
teachers stick it out through
the tough times we can
make this year the best de-
spite the falling economy.

On April 20, 2010, an
oil rig exploded in the Gulf
of Mexico resulting in 17
injured workers and 11
more presumed dead. Paul-
rademacher.com states that,
“this explosion caused the
discharge of over 500,000
gallons of oil daily.” The in-
cident has also resulted in
a price rise in fish and oil all
across the world, even here
at Canyon Ridge. Students
and teachers have found
that they must pay more for
gas in order to get to and
from school as well as sport
events and activities. British
Petroleum, better known as
BP, is the company respon-
sible for the well.
BP made multiple at-
plug the well using a “top
kill,” or the process of pump-
ing heavy liquids and other
material into a leak. Unfor-
tunately, neither of these
attempts succeeded, but,
luckily, BP thought to start
pumping some of the oil
onto ships using a four-inch
tube placed inside a 21-inch
pipe.
On June 4, BP had its
first major success in slow-
ing the spill when they
placed a cap over the valves
that were originally intend-
ed to prevent leaking. This
reduced the leakage by
50%, and the flow was basi-
cally blocked following the
improvement of the cap on
July 13.

The walls at Canyon
Ridge are crying, or at least
they seem to be shedding
tears. During the first year of
school, the walls at Canyon
Ridge were overcome with
water due to weak sealant in
the breaks. According to Mr.
Dickinson, “The bricks have
to be resealed.” The sealant
on the walls right now is not
strong enough to hold up
to the water coming in from
rain.

hired to build Canyon Ridge
High School, is responsible
for any warranty failures.
They will come back to
fix any problems at no
additional cost to Canyon

need to have different
builders next time, and they

“I think it is pretty good;
there is a lot that can be
improved on though.” One

our school has is tardiness.
There are simply way too
many tardies. You as a
person are fully responsible
to be on time for school and
class.
Being late to class isn’t
the only thing our school
has a problem with. Jacob
Groesbeck, freshman,
thinks that “dress code is
a big issue.” Which is very
true, so look in your student
planner (agenda book),
and figure out what the
dress code is and obey it!
Disrespect to teachers is

All of these budget cuts are
now affecting schools and
teachers; the students are

school starting later and

students are not as happy

Needless to say, along
with summer 2010, came
a wide variety of new
restaurants that could easily
satisfy the taste buds of any
magic valley resident.
Another vital question
one needs to ask themselves
before making a decision
on dinner is, “mild or hot?”
Yes, you probably guessed

Wild Wings; one of the most
recent additions to Twin
Fall’s eating selection. Not

High school can be the
best time in a person’s life,
but it can also be the worst.
One just has to know how
to survive it and make it fun.
The first way is to just
be nice to everybody. Don’t
go around judging people
or making fun of people
because what goes around
comes around. Eventually
you will be the one that
is the butt of all the jokes.
The second way is to
just keep on homework.
It will make high school
a lot easier just doing
the work and get on
the teachers’ good side.
Getting the homework
done allows people to
get good grades and
participate in many more
fun activities. “Homework
really doesn’t take that
much time if you just do it,”
in sports or activities. Sports
allow new people to meet
and learn new skills that
are life changing. “At first,
I thought I wouldn’t enjoy
school activities, but after
going to a basketball
game I changed my
mind,” says Nik Roundtree
(Junior). Being involved
in activities give senses of
accomplishments and will
make high school more fun.
The fourth and most
important way to make
high school fun is to find a
group of friends and stick
with them. Friends will
keep people out of trouble
and never let people feel
left out of the group.

students as the school year
begins. Students coming

to a great faculty and staff.

and Mr. Hicks welcomed
the students back to
school and laid down the
rules for the freshman
and returning students.
Students enjoy
socializing with their
friends but many aren’t
enjoying their classes.

I love summer so much,

unfolds, recently licensed
drivers are unleashed upon
the rest of the school.
This may not be the worst
thing, but when you add
these overly confident
kids to unneeded road
construction, there can only
be one outcome: disaster. it will lead students safely

aren’t fully awake. This can
lead to running stop signs,
red lights, and eventually

don’t want to get hit, then
don’t drive next to them.
I’m not trying to be
nasty about this issue, but
the younger a person is
the more likely they are
to get into an accident.
Everyone needs to
watch out; the police are
patrolling the schools more
than ever. They are looking
to hand out more tickets this
year due to the economy.
So try not to give them a
reason to pull you over.
Try to be safe,
and do not text and drive.
Taking precautions now,
can prevent an accident
from happening later.

On a warm summer
day on June 22, in Auburn,
Washington (just outside of
Seattle), the familiar scream
of Bruce Dickenson’s air-
raid-siren voice makes a
dent in the volume of the
ecstatic crowd. “Scream for
me, Seattle!” And that they
did.
Dream Theater opened
the night up, blasting into
the china-cymbal-heavy
“As I Am” and playing a
blistering 45-minute set.
As great as they were, the
somewhat laid-back group
of metal heads knew this
was not the real reason
they had gathered at this
20,000 plus seat venue. The
Gods of metal were in the
building.
The spaceship stage
lit up and became a UFO
along with some dark
classical music, and out
walked Adrian Smith with
the powerful opening riff to
“The Wicker Man”. The set
was based on mainly songs

MTV, as most of us
know, stands for Music
Television, but as this TV
station grows older, it tends
to stray further from what
the name advertises. Is MTV
still MTV?
MTV was established
in 1981 with the intentions
of changing the music
and television industries.
Over the years, MTV has
succeeded by heavily
influencing mainstream
music and by helping
introduce many popular
artists, such as Nirvana and
Linkin Park. However, MTV
has lost track of its motives in
recent years. In the mid 90s,
MTV started introducing
non-music related shows,
such as “The Real World,”
to their broadcasts, and
this dilemma has been
continually getting worse.
Today, MTV focuses
on reality shows, such as
“Jersey Shore” and “Made.”
These shows have become
extremely popular, which

This is one farewell

forgotten. I was honored
enough to be in attendance
on August 24 for one of the
final dates that Germany’s
most legendary band, the
world-renowned Scorpions,
would ever play in North
America.
Jackyl opened up the
three-act bill. During their
first few songs, mainly from
their new album “When
Moonshine and Dynamite
Collide”, the audience was
less than excited, but as
Jackyl broke out the hits
and began running into
the crowd and jumping
on tables, they won over
the 21,000 people in
Usana Amphitheater and
earned a standing ovation.
They ended their set by
destroying a stool with a
real chainsaw during their
signature tune, “Lumberjack
Song”.

com, MTV only broadcasts
music videos for six hours in
the middle of the night. If
one happens to be an owl,
or some other nocturnal
creature, one might decide
to tune in to MTV between
3 a.m. and 9 a.m. for some
high-quality, mainstream
music videos.
What do viewers think?
When asked his thoughts on
MTV, Nik Rountree (junior)
says, “I haven’t watched MTV
for five years. I liked when it

channel. There are a lot of
shows that revolve around
high school life, and some
are just really interesting to
watch.”

summer begins and that
means the beginning of the
long awaited hot summer
movies. One of the most
anticipated movies of the
summer was The Twilight
Saga: Eclipse. Fans took a
bite and agree that Eclipse
is to date the best in the
Twilight franchise. It was
even a movie that guys
who like action could go
and watch. It wasn’t a love
filled romance like the other
two, but instead it had
werewolves teaming up
with vampires battling it out
with an army of vampires

comics. They brought back

second feature film was
even more intense with
a wonderful choice of
villain and characters. Tony

the whole world and not

The government tries and
pressures down on Tony for
him to reveal the secrets to
the Iron Man suit, but he
refuses. With him at his side
are Pepper Pots and James
Rhodes as the War Machine.
As years progress so do
movies and there have been
movies remakes along with
that progress with all the
there. Two popular remakes
that got movies goers
thrilled were Nightmare
on Elm Street and Clash of
the Titans. The re-imaging
of Freddy Krueger in a
Nightmare on Elm Street
caused curiosity and made
people wonder if it was
going to be a movie down
the drain or even better
than the original films. The
film might not have been
the best, but at the same
time it was might have been
the same as the older films.
In the end it didn’t turn out
as it was expected, but it
was a good re-imaging.
One really good quality
movie is Prince of Persia: The
Sands of Time. Disney got
the rights to the film making
it a fun adventure for the

Twin Falls claims second Service Bowl win over CRHS

As the crowd rushed
in on September 10th,
thousands strong, to
support our beloved
Riverhawks, confidence
was riding high and the
possibility of stealing the
prestigious helmet trophy
back from our cross-town
rivals was closer than ever;
however, Twin Falls received
that honor when the
Hawks fell to the second-
ranked Bruins 23-0 after a
sloppy affair that until the

Thanks to a penalty on
the defense and a fourth-
down conversion among
other things, Twin marched
down the field on their
first drive of the game to
score an early touchdown
and take the 7-0 lead. The
Hawks drove the field
well themselves but were
plagued with flags and
turnovers abound after
big plays and in the red
zone at the end of each
of the first two quarters.
The scoreboard remained
unchanged going into
halftime.
In the second half,
the bruins capitalized on
a fumble from the first
Canyon Ridge series to

extend their lead to two
touchdowns. Soon after, the
brakes began to come off
the men in crimson. Injuries
and yet more turnovers
along with a few personal
fouls sealed the Riverhawks’
fate. Though this second
game of the young season
didn’t pan out as expected,
Canyon Ridge football is
far from dead. They have
four remaining conference
games, most of which they
will be favored in and a very
good chance of making
the state playoffs, where,
perhaps, they will bump
into their blue-and-white
foe once again.

Sports legend: Mia Hamm, soccer goddess

Mariel Margaret “Mia”
Hamm, born March 17, 1972,
is the best female soccer
player in the world. She has
scored more international
goals, 158, then any other
man or woman in history.
This and more makes her a
true Sports Legend.
Mia was born in Selma,
Alabama and she was raised
on various Air Force Bases
throughout the country
until her family settled in
Wichita Falls, Texas. Born
with a club foot, she was
forced to wear corrective
shoes as a toddler. As a
freshman and sophomore
in high school, Mia played
as a forward for the Notre
Dame Catholic High School
in Wichita Falls, Texas.
She then attended Lake
Braddock Secondary School
in Burke, Virginia for one
year helping them win the
1989 state championship.
At fifteen years old Mia
Hamm joined the U.S.
Women’s National team also
becoming the youngest to
ever play for them.
After high school, Mia
attended the University of
North Carolina at Chapel
Hill. While there she helped
them win four NCAA
national championships
in five years. In the time
Mia played for North
Carolina where her team
participated in ninety-five
games. Out of the ninety-
five games that they played
her, the team lost only one.
She sat out the 1991 season
so she could concentrate on
the ’91 FIFA Women’s World
Cup in China.
During this time, the
Women’s National team
won the FIFA Women’s
World Cup for the first
time and Hamm became
the youngest American
woman to win the World
Cup Championship. Mia
ended up paying for the
Women’s National Team for
seventeen years.
Five years after the
1991 World Cup Mia Hamm
and her teammates won
the Gold Medal at the
1996 Summer Olympics in
Athens, Georgia. They also
went on to win it again
in 2004. This was the last
season Mia Hamm chose
to play soccer. She retired
in hopes of raising a family
with her husband, baseball
star Nomar Garciaparra, who
she married in November of
2003.
According to

over the years Mia Hamm
won more awards, was
recognized more times,
and broke more records
than other female player
in history. Some of these
acknowledges include
being the FIFA World Player

Player of the Year for three
years, and Soccer USA’s
Female Athlete of the Year

and in 1999 she broke the
international career goals

Mia also was inducted
into the Hall of Fame in
2007, put on FIFA’s list of
125 greatest living soccer
players as selected by Pele
and, she is the Women’s
Professional Soccer League

Hawks show improvement over the summer

The American Legion
baseball team for Canyon
Ridge High School,
otherwise known as the
Twin Falls Hawks, had a
pretty good first year. The
Hawks held tryouts just as
school was getting out, and
played quite a long season
finished up in the end of
July.
The Hawks played in
the single “A” class, where
they competed against
such teams as Burley, Buhl,
Jerome, Wood River, and,
cross town rivals, the Twin
Falls Cowboys who they
split with, meaning they
won one game and lost one,
season with a respectable
13-18 record and barely
missed the cut for districts.
Senior center fielder/
pitcher for the Hawks, Scott
Speer says, “It was a good
first season, we would have
like to go a little bit further,
but overall I think we did
just fine.”
The Hawks didn’t know
what to expect after a
disappointing high school
season, winning only 3
games. “I think we surprised
everyone, now all we have
to do is carry that into high
school ball,” Speer added.

are many opportunities to

basketball’s annual ritual,
the persistent question of
who’s going to be “the next
Michael Jordan?” The NBA
has had a lot of close calls
but people still say that
nobody has had as big of
an impact on the game as
Michael Jordan.
Then came Lebron
James, a 6-foot-8,
240-pound, 18-year-old
high schooler who has
been called “the best high
school player ever, with his
explosiveness and excellent
passing ability” according to
www.sportsillustrated.com.
He held an outstanding
32-point scoring average
and a 3.75 grade point
average throughout
his high school career,
according to www.nba.
com. He exhibited the
kind of fan-pleasing ability
that made him the NBA’s
number 1 draft pick in
2003. He quickly became a
sensation with his fans and
the whole league.
The only thing holding
James back is his lack of
an NBA Championship.
So how will he fix this?
Not many people thought
his answer would be the
Miami Heat. The Heat also
consists of Dwayne Wade
and Chris Bosh, two stars
from the year before. With
this power house lineup
Lebron is hoping to put a
championship on his big list
of career achievements. But
with decisions there always
comes consequences. The
way James left his fans
brought a lot of hatred.
So back to the
question, is Lebron as good
as Michael Jordan? “Lebron
is not even close to Michael
Jordan because Michael
Jordan didn’t need other
stars to carry him” quoted

Will Lebron winning a
championship make him

Jordan? “It will take many
more championships for
Lebron to be compared to

CRHS football looks to improve over a rough first season

After what can only
be described as a less than
satisfactory season last
year, the football team is
working hard to correct
past mistakes. Coaches and
players have stepped up the
intensity this season and are
learning from by watching
film and working one on
one if someone is confused.
Brianna Larson, junior, was
quoted saying, “They’re a
pretty good football team.
Pretty good.” And Elliot
Williams, sophomore, said,
“They are getting better.”
