Pathways and credit for prior study

At USQ we understand that you may have come to us via other universities, TAFEs or private
providers and even one or two employers. W e know that your skills and knowledge come not
only through study, but also through practice and on-the-job learning. So that's why we take into
account both prior study and work experience when you apply for a program.
Please refer to USQ's Credit Calculator to find out what credit you may be eligible to receive for
your previous studies. Exemptions may be granted for relevant tertiary studies successfully
completed in the last five years where the studies have been offered by an institution
recognised by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) or by an institution adjudged as
comparable. In some circumstances, credit may be considered if the studies in question were
successfully completed within the past 10 years.

Teaching mode
As an on-campus student you will be required to attend face-to-face lectures, tutorials and
workshops. W hile this is a requirement for most of your program's courses, USQ's approach to
on-campus study has evolved to be more flexible and there may be occasions where you
complete some of your courses online or externally.
USQ has forged a reputation as one of Australia's leading providers of online education and the
delivery of external education resources continues to lead the way. If you are required to study
some of your courses online or externally, all study materials will be made available through
your UConnect student portal.
A recommended enrolment pattern, including modes of study for the courses you need to
complete for your program, is detailed in the Handbook.

Study periods
Below are the 3 study periods that USQ offer per year for undergraduate and postgraduate
programs.

Semester 1 February - June

Semester 2 July - November
Semester 3 (Non-compulsory semester) November - February

International students on a student visa are required to maintain full time enrolment. USQ
considers full time enrolment to be 4 units per semester, which program enrolment patterns
follow. Each individual unit is normally equivalent to 1 credit point.
English language programs such as ELICOS and EAPP are not aligned with the standard study
periods. Instead, these programs are run during shorter sessions which commence at various
times throughout the year.

Enrolment, deferment & cancellation

At USQ, the full-time load is defined as four (4) on-campus courses/units/credit points per study
period for both Award and Non-Award programs. All USQ programs of study offered to
international students are CRICOS registered in this manner. For details of USQ's Enrolment
Policy, please access policy.usq.edu.au/documents/13120PL#id6.

Academic misconduct includes cheating and plagiarism and is an extremely serious offence which
can lead to suspension or exclusion from the University. For further details of USQ's Academic

specification or on the front cover of the examination paper. Unauthorised material includes
current examination question papers or part thereof in advance of the official distribution by
the University to all examination candidates;
7. Impersonating or attempting to impersonate another student in assessment activities.

Students are able to withdraw from courses without academic or financial penalty if they do so
prior to the census date (end of week 4 for semesters 1 and 2, week 3 for semester 3 and week

considered.
The University recognises that occasions may arise in which students find it necessary to drop a
course after the census date. In such cases, the academic penalty may be waived and fees
reversed if the course is dropped for special circumstances including:
medical

Registered providers may only enable students to defer or temporarily suspend their studies,
including granting a leave of absence, through formal agreement in certain limited
circumstances.

through PRISMS should a student;s enrolment be deferred, suspended or cancelled. It covers
student access to complaints and appeals mechanisms if a provider initiates a suspension or
cancellation of enrolment against a student's wishes. For more information on this policy, please

To satisfy ESOS Act and National Code requirements international students are required to
complete their program in the time specified on their Confirmation of Enrolment. To comply with
this requirement the program load for each compulsory semester (i.e. semesters 1 and 2) for
international on-campus students is 4 courses.
A maximum duration applies to all programs and study should be completed within the maximum
duration. Extensions may be granted in extenuating circumstances.

ESOS framework
The Australian Government wants overseas students in Australia to have a safe, enjoyable and
rewarding place to study. Australia's laws promote quality education and consumer protection for
overseas students. These laws are known as the ESOS framework and they include the Education
Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (ESOS Act) and the National Code of Practice for
Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and T raining to Overseas Students
2018 (National Code).

Protection for overseas students

As an overseas student on a student visa, you must study with an education provider and in a
course that can be found on the Commonwealth Rrgister of Institutions and Courses for
Overseas Students (CRICOS). CRICOS registration guarantees that the course and the education
provider at which you study meet the high standards necessary for overseas students.

Your rights

The ESOS framework protects your rights, including:

Y our right to receive, before enrolling, current and accurate information about the courses,
fees, modes of study and other information from your provider and your provider's agent.
Y our right to sign a written agreement with your provider before or as you pay fees, setting
out the services to be provided, fees payable and information about refunds of course
money. Y ou are responsible for keeping a copy of your written agreement and any receipts
for payments in relation to your student fees.
Y our right to get the education you paid for. The ESOS framework includes consumer
protection that will allow you to receive a refund or be placed in another course if your
provider is unable to teach your course.
The ESOS framework sets out the standards Australian education providers offering
education to overseas students must obey. These standards cover a range of information
you have a right to know and services that must be offered, including:
orientation and access to support services to help you study and adjust to life in
Australia
who the contact officer/s is for overseas students
if you can apply for course credit
when you enrolment can be deferred, suspended or cancelled
what your provider's requirements are for satisfactory progress in the courses you
study and what support is available if you are not progressing well
if attendance will be monitored for your course
a complaints and appeals process
One of the standards does not allow another education provider to enrol a student who wants to
transfer to another course, but has not completed six months of the final course of study you
plan to undertake in Australia. If you want to transfer before-hand, you need your provider's
permission.
If you are under 18, to ensure your safety, you will be granted a visa only if there are
arrangements in place for your accommodation, support and welfare.

Your responsibilities
As an overseas student on a student visa, you have responsibilities to:
satisfy your student visa conditions
maintain your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the period of your stay
meet the terms of the written agreement with your education provider
inform your provider if you change your address
maintain satisfactory course progress
if attendance is recorded for your course, follow your provider's attendance policy
if you are under 18, maintain your approved accommodation, support and general welfare
arrangements.
