Introduction to Research in Education is a book written by Donald Ari,
Lucy Cheser Jacobs and Chris Sorensen in Canada, 1978. This eighth (VIII) book
edition consists of thirty five pages and was published by Wadsworth, Cengage
Learning.
II. Summary
Quantitative research always depends on measurement. Two very
important concepts that researchers must understand when they use measuring
instruments are validity and reliability.

1. Evidence based on test content involves the test’s content and its
relationship to the construct it is intended to measure. The Standards
defines content-related evidence as “The degree to which the sample of
items, tasks, or questions on a test is representative of some defined
universe or domain of content.” Validation of an achievement test, for
instance, would consider the appropriateness of the test’s content to the
total content area to be measured as well as how adequately the test
samples the total domain.
Although content-related validity evidence is especially important for
achievement tests, it is also a concern for other types of measuring instruments,
such as personality and aptitude measures. An instrument for measuring attitudes
toward capital punishment, for example, would be examined to ensure that it
contains, in sufficient number, a balanced set of positive and negative statements
about capital punishment.
Face validity is a term sometimes used in connection with a test’s content.
Face validity refers to the extent to which examinees believe the instrument is
measuring what it is supposed to measure. The question is, “on the face of it,”
does the test appear to be valid?
