FASH 62A, Flat Pattern Design 1

Course Description: Meets Wednesday 6:00-9:00pm, with 15 minute break.


The student will learn basic patternmaking skills using the Flat Pattern Method. A basic fitting
pattern is developed and used to create patterns for original, individual designs. Patterns for skirts,
tops, dresses, sleeves & collars are discussed. Construction of a garment from an original design and
pattern required. Basic sewing knowledge recommended.

Student Learning Outcomes:


Students will be able to:
1. Analyze garment design utilizing the basic principles of flat pattern technique: dart manipulation,
added fullness and contouring.
2. Apply basic principles of flat pattern techniques on a variety of designs in order to create
patterns.
3. Implement the basic principles of flat pattern techniques by creating an original design.

Grading:
Participation 180 points possible 30% of grade
Quizzes 100 points possible 10% of grade
Lab Assignments & Homework 420 points possible 30% of grade
Final Project – Pattern & Garment 100 points possible 30% of grade
A 95-100 B+ 86-89 B- 78-81 C 70-73 D 60-66
A- 90-94 B 82-85 C+ 74-77 C- 67-69 F 00-59

Student Responsibilities:
1. Regular class attendance.
2. Participation in lab assignments & projects.
3. Completion of exams at scheduled times. *If absent, talk to me prior to the exam date to
reschedule.
4. College Policy for Attendance:
 If you miss 10% of classes, you can be dropped from a class. With 18 classes, if you miss 2,
this is grounds for being dropped from class.
 Excessively Late (more than 15 minutes) = marked absent
 Skipping Lab = effects grade participation
5. Late assignments lowered 2 points per working day (M – F).
6. Cell phones turned to silent during class. Use the hall or outside to talk on your phone.
7. NO food allowed in the lab. Drinks limited to a designated area in the lab.
8. Academic dishonesty, cheating, & plagiarism in any academic exercise will not be tolerated.
9. For disability related accommodations, provide the Authorization for Academic
Accommodations (AAA letter) from the Disability Resources Department (DRD), 3rd floor of
Bertolini.
10. Being under the influence of controlled substances, alcohol, or cannabis is not permitted in class.
11. Respect for your classmates is mandatory. Act professional and be kind towards others.
12. Students are expected to abide by the Santa Rosa Junior College Student Conduct Standards.
