Paper title Presentation of a software tool for the analysis of technical parameters of subtitles and its
application to DVD series

Abstract Studies on Audiovisual Translation have undergone an unquestionable development during the
Max. 350 words last years, and they are more and more centred on the fields of subtitling for the deaf and
accessibility.

Improvements on accessibility towards audiovisual products that reach us by means of subtitles

must take place after a study of the technical parameters by which the text is presented on the
screen. The formal considerations about subtitles have evolved during the last years, just as
much as the technical means that are used as a support for their transmission. The
popularization of DVDs allows researchers to use powerful software tools that can carry out a
deep analysis of the subtitles and that can offer first-hand results about their technical
characteristics.

The objective of our paper is to introduce a new software tool that has been developed within
the framework of a Doctoral Thesis, and which will be used for the technical analysis of subtitle
files with plain format (in this case, the .SRT standard). This application also allows us to study
any subtitle contained into a DVD, that is, the final texts that are given to the consumers, after

they have undergone all the intermediate production stages in the translation process.

Thanks to this system, we have been able to carry out a diachronic analysis of more than a dozen
television series. The preliminary data we have so far reveal that there has been a clear evolution
along the past five years with regard to two main parameters: reading speed and length of
pauses between consecutive subtitles.
