ST. PAUL’S EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH

10th Sunday after Pentecost August 6th & 9th, 2009

Theme of the Day

From the little-known Disciples, James and Jude, we learn to

Serve the Lord in Humility

Hymns: 251 463 770 (see bulletin) 260

Order of Service:
Thursday: Order of Evening Prayer (p. 52-61)
Sunday @ 8 a.m. Service of the Word (p. 38-44)
Sunday @ 10 a.m. Contemporary Service (see insert)

First Reading: Genesis 24:1-4, 10-20

We do not know the name of the servant of Abraham whom God used to
find a wife for Isaac, but we know that he was a man of
faith - as evidenced by his prayer. The names of Jesus’ disciples
today are little known to the world, but their work is of great value in the
eyes of the Lord.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5

Paul’s goal was not to gain fame and attention for himself. When he
came to the city of Corinth, he said, “I resolved to know nothing while I was
with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.” His mission was not to
point people to himself but to the Savior.

Sermon Text: Matthew 10:1-4

Sermon Theme: James & Jude

The Unknown Disciples

1) Jesus must increase, but I must decrease

2) Your labor in the Lord is never in vain

Genesis 24:1-4, 10-208

1 Abraham was now old and well advanced in years, and the

LORD had blessed him in every way. 2 He said to

the chief servant in his household, the one in charge of all
that he had, "Put your hand under my thigh. 3 I want you to
swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of
earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the
daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living,
4 but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a

wife for my son Isaac."

10 Then the servant took ten of his master's camels

and left, taking with him all kinds of good things from his
master. He set out for Aram Naharaim and made his way to the town of Nahor.
11 He had the camels kneel down near the well outside the town; it was toward

evening, the time the women go out to draw water.

12 Then he prayed, "O LORD, God of my master Abraham, give me success today,

and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13 See, I am standing beside this spring,
and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. 14 May it be that
when I say to a girl, `Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,' and she says,
`Drink, and I'll water your camels too' -- let her be the one you have chosen for your
servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master."
15 Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder.

She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah, who was the wife of Abraham's
brother Nahor. 16 The girl was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever lain with her.
She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.
17 The servant hurried to meet her and said, "Please give me a little water from your

jar." 18 "Drink, my lord," she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave
him a drink. 19 After she had given him a drink, she said, "I'll draw water for your
camels too, until they have finished drinking." 20 So she quickly emptied her jar into
the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his
camels.

1 Corinthians 2:1-5
1 When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom

as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. 2 For I resolved to know nothing
while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 I came to you in weak-
ness and fear, and with much trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not
with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, 5 so
that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power.

1 He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spir-
its and to heal every disease and sickness. 2 These are the names of the twelve
apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of
Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the
tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas
Iscariot, who betrayed him.

5th COMMANDMENT - Next Sunday @ 9:15 a.m.

Next Sunday we will finish our Bible Study on the 5th Commandment. What
does Luther say about the 5th Commandment? The 5th commandment protects
God’s gift of life. “Whoever hates his brother is a murderer in God’s eyes” (1 John
3:15) ?

Have you noticed the large hole in

the ground outside our patio doors in the
narthex? The digging of the hole for the
new entryway to our Children’s Ministry is
finished and the footings for the foundation
are being poured.
The forms for the basement wall will be set
for pouring the concrete also. McGill Con-
struction has placed an order for steel,
so when they “cut an opening” in the wall,
they will have the steel ready to support the
area above the opening in the wall.

HOPE IN LOSS
Pastor John Mentzer had to flee his burning house in 1704. He lost all his posses-
sions. But in the midst of this darkness he declared, “The devil shall not say that he
filled me with sorrow or discouragement,” and then he sat down and wrote this
hymn:
O that I had a thousand voices
A mouth to speak with thousand tongues!
My heart, which in the Lord rejoices,
Then would proclaim in grateful songs
To all, wherever I might be,
What great things God hath done for me.

PASTOR NEEDS HELP WITH SOFTWARE

Pastor Mike used to have his calendar and address directory in his Palm
Pilot. Now that he has a Blackberry his calendar and address directory have been
transferred from the Palm into the Blackberry. On his desktop computer he now
uses “Outlook” software for his calendar and address directory.
When all of the data from his Palm Pilot was transferred into Outlook everything
went smoothly except for two things: (1) He used to have files of addresses in his
directory. For example, all of his prospects for outreach were in one file and all of
his contacts with India were in another file. Now these files have all been “thrown
together.” (2) He used to have various “To Do Lists” - one for Church Council, one
for visitation, one for membership transactions, etc.. Now instead of having seven
“To Do Lists” he has one massive “To Do List” where the various items are not
grouped together in a logical way.
If there is someone who can help with this, Pastor Mike would greatly appreciate it.
You may call him at (920) 723-4243.

WHAT DOES “CHANGE” MEAN

FOR PRO-LIFE ? - Tuesday, August 18th @ 6:30 p.m.
Have you been wondering what's down the line for pro-life issues in Madison and
Washington DC? Our WELS Alpha Life Resource
Center will host an evening of education and awareness
as legislative staffers including Jolene Churchill, assistant
o state Rep. Mark Gundrum and Sen. Glenn Grothan,
share the current “state of the pro-life state” here in
Wisconsin and beyond.
Items to be discussed are: the Family Planning Waiver
(Teen Birth Control Program) or Sex Education in
our school district, the importance of effective community
organizing, the legislative process and the importance
of voting, the UW 's plan for late-term abortions and
Gardasil (the HPV vaccine).
You are invited to join them on Tuesday, August 18th at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Cen-
ter at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church at 215 N 6th Street in Watertown. There will be a
presentation as well as time for questions, and refreshments. Spend a short eve-
ning to see how you might be useful in this new world of "change!" No RSVP is re-
quired. You may call the Alpha Life Resource Center at 261-9207 or e-mail of-
fice@alphalifecenter.org with any questions.

MIGHT YOU DONATE ITEMS

FOR OUR BABY-WELLNESS BASKETS ?
Thank you to everyone who has donated items to our Baby-Wellness
baskets in the past. These baskets are put together and delivered by the caring
individuals from the Bethesda Group Home who belong to our congregation. The
baskets include a Bible and information on the meaning of Baptism - along with
items for new babies.
We are asking those who have “adopted” items in the past to please furnish more, if
they are able. Anyone else who would be interested in “adopting” an item should
sign up on the sheet in the narthex or in church office. You may make a
financial gift to the fund if you prefer - by using the special yellow envelopes in the
back of your envelope packets. Please write “Baby-Wellness” on the envelope.

GOD EXALTS THE HUMBLE

You will never be worth anything to God and his church until you have been hum-
bled. You must go down before you can go up. Joseph finds his path to the Egyp-
tian court through the pit into which his brothers threw him. Paul rose to the apostle-
ship only by falling flat on his face on the road to Damascus.

grateful for this gift and most grateful for the gift of eternal life.

REPORT ON CHILDREN’S FUND

Last Sunday $ 768 was given to the Children’s Fund.
This money is used to help us provide a low student-
teacher ratio in our school. Each gift is a valuable contri-
bution to the General Fund for the support of the school.
Each week we need $ 1,350 to meet our goal.
So far we have received $ 3,722. This is an overall
shortfall in the Children’s Fund of $ 3,027 for the new fis-
cal year. This shortfall is included in the shortfall for the
Total Budget (listed at the end of the bulletin) and is not in addition to that shortfall.
If we are blessed with a surplus in the Children’s Fund, half of the surplus will be
used for finishing the Children’s Ministry area in the lower level of the addition and
the other half will be used for capital improvements in the school.
