ST. PAUL’S EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH

11th Sunday of Pentecost August 5th & 8th , 2010

Theme of the Day

Shepherd the Flock of God

Hymns: 546 v 1-3 545 (v1,2 & 3) 462 546 v 4,5

Order of Service:
Thursday Order of Evening Prayer (52-67)
Sunday @ 8 a.m. Service of the Word (p. 38-44)
Sunday @ 10 a.m. Contemporary Service

Psalm for the Day: Psalm 84 on page 96

First Reading: Jeremiah 23:9-22 & 30-32

Jeremiah describes false prophets who preached lies to God’s
people. A good pastor—or prophet– teaches the truth of God not
the lies of man. Is this same sin “going on” in the world today?
If so, how?

Second Reading: Matthew 23:13-15,25-28

Here we see the “Lion of Judah” in all his fury. Jesus condemns
the Pharisees for their hypocrisy. Outwardly they appeared to be
holy and righteous, but inwardly their hearts were not right with
God. They rejected Jesus as the Messiah, relied on their own
righteousness instead of God’s grace in Christ, and served God
not in humble gratitude but in worldly pride.

Sermon Text: 1 Timothy 4:16

Jeremiah 23:9-22 & 30-32

9 Concerning the prophets:

My heart is broken within me; all my bones tremble.

I am like a drunken man, like a man overcome by wine,
because of the LORD and his holy words.
10 The land is full of adulterers; because of the curse the land lies parched

and the pastures in the desert are withered.

The prophets follow an evil course and use their power unjustly.
11 "Both prophet and priest are godless;

even in my temple I find their wickedness," declares the LORD.

12 "Therefore their path will become slippery;

they will be banished to darkness and there they will fall.

I will bring disaster on them in the year they are punished,"
declares the LORD.
13 "Among the prophets of Samaria I saw this repulsive thing:

They prophesied by Baal and led my people Israel astray.

14 And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible:

They commit adultery and live a lie.

They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from his
wickedness.
They are all like Sodom to me; the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah."

15 Therefore, this is what the LORD Almighty says concerning the prophets:
"I will make them eat bitter food and drink poisoned water,
because from the prophets of Jerusalem
ungodliness has spread throughout the land."

16 This is what the LORD Almighty says:

"Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you;
they fill you with false hopes.
They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD.
17 They keep saying to those who despise me,

`The LORD says: You will have peace.'

And to all who follow the stubbornness of their hearts
they say, `No harm will come to you.'
18 But which of them has stood in the council of the LORD

to see or to hear his word? Who has listened and heard his word?
19 See, the storm of the LORD will burst out in wrath,

a whirlwind swirling down on the heads of the wicked.

20 The anger of the LORD will not turn back until he fully accomplishes

the purposes of his heart.

In days to come you will understand it clearly.
21 I did not send these prophets, yet they have run with their message;

I did not speak to them, yet they have prophesied.

22 But if they had stood in my council,

they would have proclaimed my words to my people

and would have turned them from their evil ways and from their evil deeds.

30 "Therefore," declares the LORD, "I am against the prophets who steal from one

another words supposedly from me. 31 Yes," declares the LORD, "I am against the
prophets who wag their own tongues and yet declare, `The LORD declares.'
32 Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams," declares the LORD.

"They tell them and lead my people astray with their reckless lies, yet I did not send
or appoint them. They do not benefit these people in the least," declares the LORD.

Matthew 23:13-15,25-28
13 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the

kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let
those enter who are trying to. 14
15 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over

land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him
twice as much a son of hell as you are.
25 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the

outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26
Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also
will be clean.
27 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like

whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of
dead men's bones and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you
appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wicked-
ness.

1 Timothy 4:16
16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you

will save both yourself and your hearers.

1 Timothy
Paul’s first letter to the young pastor, Timothy

What are the “Pastoral Epistles”?

1 Timothy is the first of the three “pastoral” epistles – letters written to pastors (two to
Timothy, one to Titus), rather than to churches. While the letters are written to pas-
tors, they have great meaning for churches today.

Theme of 1 Timothy
“How people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household” (1 Timothy 3:15).

Purpose of 1 Timothy
according to Merrill Unger
in “Unger’s Bible Dictionary”
Paul had four main goals in penning this letter to Timothy.
1) To encourage Timothy to oppose false teaching (1:3-7, 18-20; 6:3-5, 20, 21)
2) To have Timothy appoint teachers in the church who will “watch their life and
doctrine closely” (3:1-13 & 4:16). They need not be “brilliant men”, but
they must be “good men.”
3) To instruct him in the management of church affairs (3:14,15)
4) To exhort him to diligence in the performance of his pastoral duties (4:6-6:2)

Who was Timothy?

Paul came into contact with Timothy probably during his first missionary journey
Timothy lived in the town of Lystra in central Asia Minor –
(sometime around 48 A.D.).
present-day Turkey. Paul’s first experience in Lystra was anything but positive (read
about this amazing experience in Acts 14:8-20).
In this unlikely place Timothy was raised in a godly home. Though his father was
a Greek (a gentile), his mother, Eunice, and his grandmother, Lois, were devout
Christian Jews. These two women instructed Timothy in the Old Testament Scrip-
tures from his earliest childhood (2 Timothy 1:5 & 3:14-16).
When Paul visited Lystra on his second missionary journey (Acts 16:1-3) – three
years after his first visit – Timothy was a disciple so highly spoken of that Paul took
him along as his companion in ministry. When trouble arose in churches – and Paul
was prevented from visiting them personally – he often sent Timothy in his place.
This happened in Thessalonica (1 Thessalonians 3:1,2) and Corinth (1 Corinthians 4:17 &
16:10).

1 Timothy
(Please note - This is the second page of information on 1 Timothy)

When Paul sent Timothy to Philippi, he commended Timothy to them with the
highest praise that any minister of Christ can hope to receive. Paul says of Timothy:
“I have no one else like him, who takes a genuine interest in your welfare. For
everyone looks out for his own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. But you know
that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served
with me in the work of the gospel” (Philippians 2:20-22).
Commentator Martin Franzmann in “The Word of the Lord Grows” adds, “If
Paul was a fond father to Timothy, he was not a blind one. He knew his beloved child’s
weaknesses: Timothy was still young and apparently conscious of it as a handicap (1 Timothy
4:12). He was inclined to be timid (1 Cor. 16:10,11 & 2 Timothy 1:7).
Besides his health was not the best; his stomach troubled him, an ailment not un common
among sensitive and conscientious young men of God (1 Timothy 5:23).”

Timetable for the Pastoral Epistles

as constructed by Martin Franzmann
n “The Word of the Lord Grows”
The following is a probable timeline.
1) That Paul was released at the end of the two years’ imprisonment recorded in
Acts 28:30 (61 A.D.) seems certain. Whether Paul ever carried out his
intention of going to Spain (Romans 15:28) remains uncertain.
2) Paul revisited his former mission fields in Asia (present-day Turkey) and
Macedonia (northern Greece). Paul returned to the East by way of the
island of Crete where he left Titus with the task of “putting God’s house in or-
der” (Titus 1:5). Paul left Timothy in charge at Ephesus (1 Timothy 1:3).
Paul proceeded from Ephesus to Macedonia – and from there he wrote his first let-
ter to Timothy (1 Timothy 1:3)
3) Paul wrote the letter to Titus, either from Macedonia just before his departure for
Nicopolis or during the journey to Nicopolis where he hoped to spend the winter.
Paul then visited Troas, Corinth and Miletus (2 Timothy 4:13,20).
4) Paul was again arrested and imprisoned at Rome. This time his imprisonment
was much more severe than 59-61 A.D. and he saw no hope for acquittal. In his
second letter to Timothy he summons “his beloved child” to him once more before
the end.
5) This second imprisonment in Rome ended in the martyrdom of Paul. It took place
under Nero sometime between 63-67 A.D..

PASTOR RECEIVES CALL TO LIVE IN INDIA

Pastor Mike received a call to serve as the
future Field Coordinator for India.
The current Field Coordinator, Mark
Krueger, plans to retire in the next couple
of years. The Coordinator oversees the
mission work our Synod does in India. He
works with two other missionaries and the
national pastors of CELM (Christ Evangelical
Lutheran Ministry), our national church in
India which has 9,500 souls in 126
congregations and 60 preaching stations.
The Field Coordinator is the Principal of the Seminary and Pre-Seminary in India
where 93 men are studying to be pastors. The wife of the Coordinator serves as the
overseer for the orphanages in India. He is being asked to “shadow” the current
Field Coordinator, Mark Krueger, until his retirement. Pastor Mike and Cathy ask for
your prayers as he deliberates this call.

PLEASE DO NOT RETURN YOUR WORSHIP BULLETINS

We encourage you to take home your worship bulletins each week instead of re-
turning them to the ushers or placing them on the counter. There is so much infor-
mation in them - that we would hope you use them during the week for reviewing the
Bible passages, for checking the upcoming activities, or for sharing with a friend.
The bulletin is one of the best advertisements for your church. We make plenty of
bulletins for the services so there is usually no need to return them. If you missed a
Sunday, you may also find the previous week’s bulletin on the kiosk in the Narthex.

LEADERSHIP TEAM
FOR CHILDREN'S MINISTRY - Sunday, August 15th @ 9:15 a.m.

TEEN OUTING TO NOAH’S ARK - Monday, August 16th

St. Paul’s and Bethany teens will be going
to Noah’s Ark on Monday, August 16th. Those who
want to go should sign-up on the sheet on the kiosk
in the narthex or on the counter in the church office
or contact Deb Kind (920) 728-1026) or Ian Schaefer
(920) 699-9067. God uses water for life and refresh-
ment as he washes our sins away in baptism and in
creation as we bathe and swim in water.

DEDICATION & OPEN HOUSE

FOR CHILDREN'S CENTER - Sunday, September 19th
The first time we use our Children's Center will be Sunday, September 19th. On that
day we will dedicate the Center and have an Open House. We are working on
decorating the Children's Center with a Noah's Ark theme. We are thankful that God
is providing a place in our church facility for ministry to children. We have
always been blessed with the Lutheran Elementary School, but we have never had
a place for children in the church facility. "Let the little children come to me and
do not hinder them for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (Luke 18:16).

JESUS CARES MINISTRY START-UP

Jesus Cares Ministries (JCM)
is a unique outreach ministry whose
mission is to assist congregations in
the WELS/ELS in meeting their
responsibility to share the Gospel with people who have an intellectual and develop-
mental disability, their families and communities. We assist congregations by train-
ing volunteers, encouraging congregations to use our simplified Bible history curricu-
lum, conducting our simplified worship service, helping plan fellowship events, and
helping you locate and conduct outreach to people with special needs in your area.
When possible it is important to include people with disabilities in a regular Bible
class or worship opportunity that the church provides. However, sometimes it is
beneficial to have programs that are specifically designed for persons with special
needs that will allow them to know Jesus as their Savior and for them to have an ac-
tive worship and prayer life.
We have an opportunity in Jefferson to share the Gospel to a large number of
adults with special needs. Many of them gather on a daily basis at the St. Coletta
campus in Jefferson. They want to hear more about their Savior. If you are inter-
ested in hearing and discussing more about this possible outreach program please
join us for a meeting. We hope to see you there.

A NEW RECORD FOR A SUCCESSFUL BLOOD DRIVE

Thanks to all donors who participated in our blood drive on
Saturday, July 31st. We set a new record for our St. Paul’s
blood drives for the BloodCenter of Wisconsin.
We signed in 55 donors and received 52 blood units. We
had 3 individuals who were not able to donate for various
reasons - but they were still able to come out and show
their community support. – This is a new record! Con-
gratulations!
52 units will save up to 156 lives in the community with
those patients using these blood and blood products! How?
Each unit brought in can save up to 3 lives because the
BloodCenter uses the red cells, platelets and plasma for
special patient need and care situations.
Staff from the BloodCenter commented on the congeniality of our donors and volun-
teers and the support given our drive. A special thank you to those who donated
time and/or refreshments to help make for a successful blood drive. Our next blood
drive is scheduled for a Saturday in December 11, 2010, from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.
m. Bethany will have a blood drive for the BloodCenter of Wisconsin on October 2,
2010. Please mark your calendars.
