James Lind, president of
Pinkwood, wanted to improve
on building materials by
applying the eye-catching
pink solution to it. “The coat-
ing makes any wood fire-
resistant,” he says.
The company is focusing
mainly on I-joists right now,
but hopes to expand to all
wooden building products in
the future.
“Putting the solution on, we
drastically reduce the spread
of flame. It takes longer for
this to catch on fire.”
Pinkwood is a distinctively-coloured wood that is fire, mold and moisture resistant. With every
purchase of materials, the company will contribute to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
Pinkwood also offers pro-
tection against mold and
moisture.
“In open construction sites,
materials constantly get wet,
contributing to mold growth
in the house,” Lind says. “This
is a water-based, non-toxic
latex acrylic base that encap-
sulates the wood, making it
far more moisture resistant.”
An added bonus to both
h o m e ow n e r s a n d h o m e
builders, there is no differ-
ence in cost.
“We are bringing this prod-
uct to market at the exact
same price as all the other
competitive products on the
market, so there is no pre-
mium from using this prod-
uct,” Lind says.
Some might question the
use of the colour pink.
“This is not a colour you’d
traditionally connect with the

construction industry by any
stretch of the imagination,”
Lind chuckles.
But the reason for pink is a
celebration of the new part-
nership between Pinkwood
and the Canadian Breast Can-
cer Foundation.
“We donate one cent of
every linear foot of the prod-
uct to the foundation, so eve-
ryone who buys one of these
houses is making a contribu-
tion of $20 to $25 to searching
for a cure for breast cancer.”
Lind is hoping there’s a mar-
ket for a product that makes
homes safer and healthier for
no extra cost, while support-
ing a worthy cause.
“Right now people might
drive by and ask why their
house is pink. It’s not going to
be very long before people are
asking why their home isn’t
pink.”
