SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

PROCESSOR SPEED
You must install the CDEGS software on a PC with a Pentium or equivalent processor as a minimum.
However, we strongly recommend the use of a Pentium PC since CDEGS runs can take a long time to
complete on a slower processor. Please refer to the following CDEGS Computation Time Benchmark if
you require an indication about the performance of various types of equipment.

RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY (RAM)

You will need a minimum of 32 MB of random access memory to run. However, we strongly recommend
that you upgrade your RAM to 128 MB or higher as this will significantly improve your system
performance.

HARD DISK CAPACITY

You will need to reserve a minimum of 150MB for a complete CDEGS installation under Windows
95/98 or Windows NT 4.0. However, you should allow room on your hard disk to accommodate input
files, temporary run files, output files, database files, and plot files. Please refer to Table 1 for details on
hard disk capacity requirements of each sub-package and for average size of different types of files
(input, temporary, output, database, plots, etc.).

WINDOWS VERSION
This version can be installed under Windows 95/98, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000.

VIDEO SCREENS
The following IBM PC video graphics terminal types are supported (for text and graphical
displays):
Take note that the minimum recommended screen size is 800X600 pixels.
• MCGA,
• CGA,
• EGA,
• VGA,
• VGA+,
• SVGA,
• Hercules,
• Hercules Plus,
• InColor,
• 100% compatible cards corresponding to any of the above.

PRINTERS AND PLOTTERS

Graphics hardcopy can be generated for devices supporting any of the following protocols:
• Hewlett-Packard HP-PCL (i.e., Laserjet printers),
• PostScript,
• Calcomp,
• Houston Instruments DM/PL,
• Hewlett-Packard HP-GL,
• IBM GDDM (Graphical Data Display Manager),
• Tektronix 4010 / 4014 and PLOT-10,
• WMF (which is supported on all Windows printers)
• DEC REGIS.
For printouts of tabulated values, the engineering application modules create ASCII files with up to 132
characters per line. The output data processor creates ASCII files with a maximum of 80 characters per
line. You can edit these files with any word processor to examine the results or to reformat portions of
them for printing. Note that the CDEGS Windows environment provides a text viewer and editor to help
you edit and view CDEGS input and output files.

PROTECTION KEY AND PARALLEL PORT

SES ships the CDEGS software package, or one of its sub-packages, with a hardware protection key.
The key is to be plugged into the parallel port (LPT1:) of your PC. The engineering modules will not
function without it. Take note that the network version of CDEGS requires the key to be plugged into the
server’s parallel port.
It is important that you secure this protection key at all times. If you return the key to SES, for any
reason (replacement, upgrades, etc.), you MUST ship it using an SES approved courier service such as
FedEx or UPS. Please check with SES BEFORE shipping back the key.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CDEGS PACKAGE

WINDOWS 95/98 AND WINDOWS NT 4.0 INSTALLATION

Please refer to the Installation Instructions for the CDEGS Network Version document if you are
installing either the server or client application of the network version.

1. Insert the hardware protection key into your parallel port (not applicable to the network version).
2. Insert the CD-ROM. The Setup program should start automatically; if it doesn’t, launch setup.exe at the
root of the disk.
3. Preferably, uninstall any preexisting installation of the 32-bit version of CDEGS. However, you can keep
an existing version of CDEGS on your system (e.g. C:\Program Files\CDEGS99) by keeping it in a
separate directory from the new version (e.g. C:\Program Files\CDEGS2K). Setup will automatically
detect and list any previous versions of CDEGS installed on your PC; if previous versions are detected,
then simply select the versions that you want uninstalled and click on the Next button which will proceed
with the uninstallation.
To manually uninstall the programs, go to Settings (from the Start button) then to Control Panel. Select
Add / Remove Programs, then select Grarep (if present) and remove it, and select CDEGS97 (if present)
and remove it.
4. For a first-time installation on a Windows NT machine, the Sentinel driver for the security key needs to be
installed. You will need administrator privileges to be able to install this driver. Consult your system
administrator if necessary. The setup program will automatically install the driver and prompt you for a
reboot. Once rebooted, run setup.exe again to proceed with the installation.
To manually do these steps, go to the Win_nt directory on the CD-ROM and double-click Setupx86.exe.
This will start the application shown in the following figure. Select Install Sentinel Driver under
Functions. The dialog box will appear. Click OK. Once the driver is installed, reboot your system and
restart the installation.

5. Select either a Demo Version Installation or a Professional Version Installation.

6. For the professional version, the setup program will verify the status of the security key. If the program
successfully detects the key, click OK and the Install… button. Otherwise, verify that the security key is
correctly inserted in your parallel port. Under Windows NT, verify that the Sentinel driver is correctly
installed. If necessary reinstall the Sentinel driver as in Step 4.

7. At this point, please follow the instructions that appear on your computer screen for the remainder of the
installation process.

8. If you are installing the demo version, you will prompted to select which groups of demonstration output
files to copy. The Typical option copies the minimum set of demonstration files recommended by SES.
Choose the Custom option if you wish to explore more fully the capabilities of the software.
9. Once the program control has returned to the main setup program, you may be prompted to reboot. Please
do as indicated; otherwise CDEGS will not run properly. If you are not prompted to reboot, you will be
invited to launch the CDEGS program. Click on Finish to complete the installation process and optionally
launch the program.
10. A new Windows group will be created containing the CDEGS icons.

11. To start the CDEGS package (or one of its sub-packages), simply double-click the CDEGS icon, with the
blue SES logo. This program will give access to most of the other SES programs.

DEFINING PRINTERS, PLOTTERS AND VIDEO SCREEN TYPE

All device drivers are contained in the main code of each program. As a result, it is not necessary to
configure the software for a specific printer or terminal screen type during installation: each time you run the
software, you specify what type of graphics device you wish to generate a plot for.
If the plot is intended for your terminal screen, it is immediately displayed on your screen. If you request a
hardcopy, then a plot file is created. You can use the file View/Print/Plot utility to view, print or plot or you can
exit the CDEGS interface and issue a PRINT or COPY command to send files from your hard disk to your
printer or plotter.

INSTALLATION TROUBLE-SHOOTING

Q: CDEGS won’t start. What’s wrong?

Read the systems requirements section of this document carefully. Check that you have the recommended
minimum configuration to run the CDEGS software.

Q: I installed the software and none of the engineering modules work.

The protection key must be installed in the parallel port before the installation is done. The software
requires the key to determine what to install. Also, you must launch the setup program in the root
directory of the CDROM, or floppy, for proper installation. Also make sure that you have installed the
professional version.

Q: The engineering modules will not execute?

When the key is missing or defective, the following message is displayed if one of the engineering
modules is accessed:

• ERROR * Option(s) not available or inaccessible. Access denied.

Please test your system with only the protection key installed in the parallel port. Once you have verified
that this configuration does work, you could then add another connection to the parallel port (such a
printer).
