PE 12 (DANCE)

DANCE

- Refers to the movement where there emerges organization, structure

and pattern.

- It is a composition that implies arrangement of parts into a form.

RHYTHM

- A measured motion of flow, characterized by basically regular recurrence of


elements or features as beats, sounds, or accents.

REASONS WHY PEOPLE DANCE?

FEATURES OF DANCE (MAIN COMPONENTS)

1. THE DANCER- is someone who uses movements to express ideas and stories in
performances.
o TECHNIQUE – SKILL IN EXECUTING MOVEMENT
2. BASIC STEP AND FORMATION- A default movement and use of particular space
that shows fundamental structure on any form of dance.
Ex: Ballet – attitude, arabesque,
Ballroom – Box step,
Folk Dance – skips, hops, twirl
3. CHOREOGRAPHY- Choreography is the art of making dances, the gathering and
organization of movement into order and pattern.
o MOVEMENT-action of dances with the use of body/bodies to create
organized pattern.
o THEME- content/main ingredient, or a message
4. DANCE NOTATION- Dance notation is mostly used in recording rather than
creating dances.
5. THEATRICAL ELEMENTS- refer to dramatic visualization of a concept that provides
enhancements of a certain piece of art.
o MUSIC- used as accompaniment, sets the mood, motivation to a
particular dance piece

ELEMENTS OF DANCE

The foundational concepts and vocabulary that help students develop


movement skills and understand dance as an artistic practice.
The acronyms BASTE helps students remember the elements:

BODY - SIGNIFIES WHAT PART OF THE BODY TO USE


ACTION - SIGNIFIES HOW THE BODY WORKS
SPACE - SIGNIFIES PLACE WHERE TO PUT THE ACTION
TIME - SIGNIFIES WHEN AN ACTION WILL BE USE
ENERGY - SIGNIFIES WHY AN ACTION IS BEING CONSUMED.
MOVEMENT CONCEPT

1-Locomotor - MOVING

Walking, Running, Jumping, Hopping, Skipping, Leaping, Galloping, Sliding

2-Non-Locomotor – IN PLACE

Flexion (bend/shortening),
Extension (turning, twisting, circling)
Arm shoulder circling
Pendular – (swaying arms and body)
Vibrating- (Shaking, Beating)

FEATURES OF DANCE PROGRAMS (TYPES)

a. Creative rhythms – usually done for children


b. Natural dances – natural in form, informal
c. Folk/ethnic - customs, beliefs, rituals of people from a particular region
or country
d. Ballroom and Social Dance – formal atmosphere in ballroom / usually done in
social gatherings.
- Latin Dances- originated from latin America usually a couple dance believe to
have evolve mostly as social street dance gathering.
o Chacha - a fast rhythmic ballroom dance of Latin American origin with a basic
pattern of three steps and a shuffle

o Rumba - ballroom dance of Cuban origin in ²/₄ or ⁴/₄ time with a basic
pattern of step-close-step and marked by a delayed transfer of weight
and pronounced hip movements
o Samba - Brazilian dance of African origin with a basic pattern of step-close-
step-close and characterized by a dip and spring upward at each beat of the
music

o Jive- lively style of dance popular especially in the 1940s and 1950s, performed
to swing music or rock and roll.

o Paso Doble - a fast-paced ballroom dance based on a Latin American style of


marching.

- Ballroom – inspired by European and American elite by which a couple dances


with its form usually dance socially and competitively.
o Slow Waltz
o Viennese Waltz
o Standard Tango
o Foxtrot
o Quickstep
- Club Dance – originally formed in streets but nowadays it has become a
popular dance craze by hippies on the dance clubs usually after work.
o Disco, Salsa, Argentine Tango, Bachata, Kizumba, Cheroke, Merengue,
e. Recreational and Creative Dances
- shows interaction, relaxation, informal gatherings, parties
- Product of exploration and improvisation of movements, emotions, and
feeling.

f. Competitive – dance that became competitive in nature, rigorous training and
undermining of techniques in dance.
1. Rhythmic Gymnastics- inspired by gymnastic movement usually done on the
floor with apparatus (ball, hoop, lace) combining different types of dance steps
that fits to the theme of a particular competitive piece.
2. Dance Sport-popularized in the European region Social Dance and Ballroom
became the inspiration of this sports… now a days it has become a group
competition in the collegiate level.
3. Dance Battle – popularized in the hip hop community where 2 groups or
individual battle on the floor
4. Cheer Dance- popularized in the high school and college sorority/fraternity in
support of their athletes and became famous of its athletic movement through

gymnastics.
