A couple of centuries ago, in Pennsylvania, our forefathers created the
Books & the Best Declaration of Independence, which few of us can accurately quote from these
Selection of days. According to some, about 60 years ago, an alien craft crashed in the desert
outside of Roswell, New Mexico. Most people can probably tell you more about
World Music CDs
that than about what happened in Philadelphia in 1776.
What do these two historic moments have in common? They’re both being
1O 9 8 1/ 2 S. S T F R A NC I S DR . @ P E N R D. MON – SAT 1O – 5 9 8 2 . 2 5 9 2 celebrated this weekend in Roswell. Every year that little town on U.S. 285 (you
can reach it if you just follow 285 south from Eldorado) pays tribute to the day
when the town’s name became forever tied to the term “crackpot.” Since that
date comes pretty close to our country’s birthday, Roswell has good reason to
display fireworks and the results of alien autopsies in one big ceremony!
Want more information on the Roswell UFO Festival 2008? Check out
roswellufofestival.com, which provides data but warns it isn’t necessarily reliable.
There should be a parade, costume contests, movies screenings, and panel talks.
Among the expected guests are UFO authority Stanton T. Friedman, who pops
up on cable TV shows a lot, and performers Dee Wallace (who, along with
Ursula Andress and Lee Meriwether, is one of my favorite actresses) of E.T.:
Happy The Extra-Terrestrial fame and Keir Dullea, best known for 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Element 115 (billed as the only band with an alien drummer) is scheduled to
Independence Day! perform, and you can take in an original play called Alien Hunters of the ET Café.
Plus there’s the always-enjoyable International UFO Museum and Research
Open 4th of July Center (114 N. Main St.). What are we all doin’ up here going to the opera and
stuff like that, when new frontiers await us down south? Roswell, here I come!
