TELEOLOGICAL

Purpose

Surrogacy is presented as a method of medically assisted reproduction among others, a


treatment for infertility which is often depicted as a generous altruistic action meant to help couples
who cannot naturally have children, to offer them the joy of parenting. Surrogate parenting is an
arrangement in which one or more persons, typically a married infertile couple (the intended
rearing parents), contract with a woman to gestate a child for them and then to relinquish it to them
after birth. It aims to give the intended parents the chance of becoming parents. It aims to let them
experience the joy of having children, and also, it aims to give them the contentment and
satisfaction that a child can give in one’s life.

End Goal

The main end goal of surrogacy is to help those who want to start a family but face a variety
of challenges in the process like couples who have often spent years trying to have a child, and
who have exhausted all other avenues for conceiving a child of their own. In many cases, intended
parents in surrogacy are people who have tried for years to have a biological child, either naturally
or through the in vitro process. They badly want to be parents that they’re willing to do anything
to achieve this dream, even pursue the surrogacy process.

Natural Law

Natural law is the rule of conduct that is given to us by God in the constitution of the nature
which God has endowed us. Roman Catholics believe that God intended for married couples to
conceive and carry children naturally. That procreation of a new person must must be the fruit and
sign of the mutual self-giving of the supposes of their love and fidelity to each other. Because it is
only in marriage is it legitimately right to procreate a child. In addition to that, children are believed
to be a gift from God and not an object of desire and that a child has a natural right to be conceived
through an act of love, to be nurtured in the womb by his own mother, and also to be born by his
own mother as well. Lastly, There is a unity between sexual relations and procreation. Procreation
cannot occur apart from marital sexual intercourse, and every conjugal act in marriage must be
open to procreation as the natural result of God's creation design.

Below are the statements from Catechism of the Catholic Church which supports the given
claim as regards the natural law concerning surrogacy:

“Techniques that entail the dissociation of husband and wife, by the intrusion of a person
other than the couple (donation of sperm or ovum, surrogate uterus), are gravely immoral. These
techniques (heterologous artificial insemination and fertilization) infringe the child's right to be
born of a father and mother known to him and bound to each other by marriage. They betray the
spouses' "right to become a father and a mother only through each other.” CCC#2376

“Techniques involving only the married couple (homologous artificial insemination and
fertilization) are perhaps less reprehensible, yet remain morally unacceptable. They dissociate the
sexual act from the procreative act. The act which brings the child into existence is no longer an
act by which two persons give themselves to one another, but one that "entrusts the life and identity
of the embryo into the power of doctors and biologists and establishes the domination of
technology over the origin and destiny of the human person. Such a relationship of domination is
in itself contrary to the dignity and equality that must be common to parents and
children."168 "Under the moral aspect procreation is deprived of its proper perfection when it is
not willed as the fruit of the conjugal act, that is to say, of the specific act of the spouses' union .
. . . Only respect for the link between the meanings of the conjugal act and respect for the unity of
the human being make possible procreation in conformity with the dignity of the person.”

“A child is not something owed to one, but is a gift. The "supreme gift of marriage" is a
human person. A child may not be considered a piece of property, an idea to which an alleged
"right to a child" would lead. In this area, only the child possesses genuine rights: the right "to be
the fruit of the specific act of the conjugal love of his parents," and "the right to be respected as a
person from the moment of his conception.” CCC#2378

“The Gospel shows that physical sterility is not an absolute evil. Spouses who still suffer
from infertility after exhausting legitimate medical procedures should unite themselves with the
Lord's Cross, the source of all spiritual fecundity. They can give expression to their generosity by
adopting abandoned children or performing demanding services for others.” CCC#2379
