Pete Seeger in the theater of the mind

Cowboy Boots
Established 1990 Santa Fe, New Mexico
“It’s a challenge to write about a complex man whose motto is, ‘Strive for
simplicity, and learn to distrust it.’” So notes author David King Dunaway in
How Can I Keep From Singing?: The Ballad of Pete Seeger (Villard Books/Random
House), his recently updated biography of the folk singer and activist.
Dunaway also produced a new three-part radio documentary on Seeger, which is
broadcast on KUNM-FM 89.9 from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday,
July 4, 5, and 6. This three-hour show features interviews with Seeger and
his peers, friends, and family members. Expect renditions of many tunes that
Seeger wrote, co-wrote (“Turn! Turn! Turn!” and “If I Had a Hammer”), or made
famous (“Which Side Are You On?”).
Born in New York and now an octogenarian, Seeger helped make folk music 989-8110 www.backattheranch.com 209 East Marcy St.
popular in this country in the ’50s and ’60s. He survived being blacklisted and
cited for contempt of Congress in the 1950s for failing to cooperate with the
House Un-American Activities Committee. In 1969, Seeger and his friends
launched the Clearwater sloop into the Hudson River in an effort to encourage
environmental support for clean waterways; the public-education program

continues today.
