Week 1: (26/10/17 – 2/11/2017)

1. DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF ELECTROMAGNETIC DISC BRAKING SYSTEM. [online]

Available at: https://www.irjet.net/archives/V3/i4/IRJET-V3I4160.pdf [Accessed 29 Oct. 2017].

The design an eddy current braking system and optimization for various operational parameters
has been done by simulation and by various calculations and analysis of the model is carried out.
The final product undergoes testing and is then fabricated.

2. EDDY CURRENT BRAKING STUDY FOR BRAKE DISC OF ALUMINIUM, COPPER AND
ZINK. [online] Available at:
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/274371429_EDDY_CURRENT_BRAKING_STUDY_FO
R_BRAKE_DISC_OF_ALUMINIUM_COPPER_AND_ZINK [Accessed 30 Oct. 2017].

The comparative study of three different materials (aluminum, copper and zinc) is done on electro-
magnetic braking system using eddy currents. As Aluminum performs better than copper and zinc
the study continues using two different series of aluminum (AI6061) and (AI7075). By analysis and
calculation, it is observed that that Al6061 have greater performance than Al7075 as the brake
disc material.

3. Development of Electro-Magnetic Brake System. (2016). [ebook] Romin Patel. Available at:
http://www.ijrmet.com/vol6issue2/1/11-romin-patel.pdf [Accessed 29 Oct. 2017].

4. Design & Fabrication of Eddy Current Braking System. (2016). [ebook] Available at:
https://www.irjet.net/archives/V3/i4/IRJET-V3I4160.pdf [Accessed 29 Oct. 2017].

The purpose of the project is to study practical and theoretical braking and establish air gap
beyond which the electromagnetic brakes loses their effectiveness

5. Design & Theoretical Study of Electromagnetic Braking System. (2016). [ebook] Available at:

Week 2: (2/11/17 – 8/11/2017)

6. Anon, (n.d.). [ebook] Available at: https://theses.lib.vt.edu/theses/available/etd-

5440202339731121/unrestricted/CHAP1_DOC.pdf [Accessed 5 Nov. 2017].

The different types of braking systems were discussed and illustrated. Conventional braking and
electromagnetic braking systems was explained in detail.

7. Shapiro, J. (2009). The Basics of Electromagnetic Clutches and Brakes. [online] Machine
Design. Available at: http://www.machinedesign.com/archive/basics-electromagnetic-clutches-and-
brakes [Accessed 6 Nov. 2017].

The ability to increase torque without a heavier or larger clutch is especially important in weight-
sensitive applications. Engagement time depends on magnetic field strength, air gap, and inertia

8. Energy Efficient Electric Vehicle Using Regenerative Braking System. (2017). [ebook] IJARIT.
Available at: https://www.ijariit.com/manuscripts/v3i3/V3I3-1173.pdf [Accessed 6 Nov. 2017].

9. Theoretical research on the issue of heat stress that appears in mechanism of automotive
braking system and their influence. (2017). [ebook] Available at: https://www.matec-
conferences.org/articles/matecconf/pdf/2017/26/matecconf_imane2017_07018.pdf [Accessed 7
Nov. 2017].

The vehicle's kinetic energy is converted into heat, which leads to poor functionality of the entire
braking system. As negative effects of brake system warming can be mentioned: rapid wear of the
brake pads or brake disc, cracks or deformation of the brake disc, occurrence of the "fading"

phenomenon
