b. Chemistry, through Organic Chemistry
c. A proficiency in basic Biology, Chemistry and Physics
Required: M. Bear, B. Connors, M. Paradiso, Neuroscience, Exploring the Brain, 1st, 2nd or 3rd ed.
1996, 2001, 2006 Williams & Wilkins
Course Resources are available at:

Recommended: Use voice recorder to review classroom lectures.
Exams/quizzes: Scientific or statistical calculator
Objectives: To give students an exposure to basic principles of neuroscience via classroom lecture-
discussions. BIO 309 is a GE course, but may be taken as a Core elective course for Biology majors in place
of BIO 424: Neuroscience. Students may not receive core elective credit for both BIO 309 and BIO 424.
Hopefully, students will develop an appreciation for a basic understanding of neuroscience. Through a
review of the history of neuroscience, the student may learn the philosophy of science. Hopefully, the
student will use the knowledge in a constructive way to advance humanity.
General Requirements and Policies: Students should read text assignments before lectures so that they
may better understand lectures and participate in class discussions. Questions and curiosity are important
aspects of learning. Students should attend all lectures (except for illness or other valid reason).
Schedule of Exams: Two midterms (100 pts each), and a final (100 pts). The general nature of the exams
will be announced. The three exams will be cumulative. Each exam will include information from lectures,
and readings. The exams missed due to unavoidable events such as accidents, illness, etc. can be made up
later. Class projects (n=5) will also be given or assigned for a total of 50 points.

Midterm I 100 points 28.6%

Midterm II 100 points 28.6%
Projects (5) 50 points 14.2%
Final Examination 100 points 28.6%
Total 350 points 100.0%
Examination Method: The exams will include mostly multiple choice, problems, and/or short answer
questions on lecture, text readings and demonstration material. Bring a Scantron sheet (#882) to exams.
Grading: The total of all exam scores will be calculated and the overall letter grade will be determined.
Only notification before the test of a documented emergency, acceptable to the University, will be
considered as a valid excuse for missing a Midterm. If you miss a scheduled exam with an acceptable
excuse, & have notified the instructor before the time of the test, arrangements may be made to take a make
up test at the Test Center (x3353; http://www.csupomona.edu/~academic/testcenter/) in the CLA Building
(98-P2-004). There will be no make-ups for the Final Exam.

1
Cheating: Cheating and plagiarism are violations of University policy and are considered serious offenses. The Department of
Biological Sciences takes all incidences of academic dishonesty quite seriously, and will act accordingly.
Bonus points: Donating blood to the Red Cross, or
Donating money to the Red Cross (Emergency relief fund) 5 points
Tutoring or study group 5 points
Assessment sheet (p. 4) 2 points
In-class volunteering 1 or 2 points
