Drill String Design

Tutorial Sheet

(a) A well has to be drilled for 12000 ft depth using12 ppg mud and 60,000 WOB. The
drill collar is 6.5 inch × 2.5 inch. Calculate the required length of drill collar for
vertical well drilling and inclined well drilling if the well inclination is 45 degrees.
(Assuming 19.5 ppf nominal weight of drill pipe to support the drill string).

(b) Which one grade and class should be chosen for the following drill pipe
characteristics by using design criteria –

Given Value: d = 2.375 (inches) and t =0.280 inches, D = 15000 ft

Grades: S and G
Class: P and 3

Properties:
1. Burst Pressure
2. Tensile Strength

(c) An exploratory drilling rig has following variations of drill pipes of 5 in. X 4.276 in.,
19.5 ppf, standard specifications to design the drill string with minimum MOP 50,
000 lbs.
i. 21.3 ppf, Grade E, Premium class pipe
ii. 22.5 ppf, Grade X, New pipe

The drill collar is of 8 inch OD (de) and 2 inch ID (di). The linear weight of drill collar
can be calculated by the relation-
wdc = 10.68 t (de – t) and 2t= de - di

The mud weight is 100 pcf and WOB is 60,000 lbs.

a. Calculate the length of drill collar assuming 15000 ft. equivalent

length of string.
b. What is the maximum depth of the bore hole that can be drilled using
all the drill pipes shown above with drill collar?
c. Calculate the available safety factor of tension for each section of drill
pipe.
(d) Calculate all the drill pipe possible properties with the data given below for the
Grades – S and G

D (inches) t (inches)
2.375 0.280
2.875 0.362
3.5 0.368
3.5 0.449
4 0.262
4 0.330
4.5 0.2710
4.5 0.337
5 0.500
5.5 0.304

(e) Cross check the design of drill string and comment on suitability of the design
solution. Assume design factor for collapse and burst as normal.
Drill String:
WOB = 60,000; MOP = 50,000; SFT = 1.35; RPM = 60
Drill Collar: Ldc = 1200ft; wdc = 96.12 ppf; L = 10,000 ft
Drill Pipe: Outside diameter = 4 in.; Thickness = 0.262 inch; 11.85 ppf
