Rainfall Analysis

The number of rainy days influences the need and design for rainwater

harvesting. The fewer the annual rainy days or longer the dry period, the more the

need for rainwater collection in a region. The ten years period rainfall data that is from

2007 to 2017 will be analyzed. Rainfall data will be plotted against their respective

years. Besides of annual basis, the data will also be plotted against their respective

months with respect to each year. To identify the period of highest peak for rainfall

harvestable, the average rainfall depth for every month is plotted on a graph. Then it

is easy to identify which period is the best for high amount of rainwater harvestable.

The operation to be used in analyzing the rainfall data is; average of annual

rainfall data with period of ten years, the average of monthly rainfall data also in

period of ten years, and the intra annual variability of the rainfall data by finding the

coefficient of variations of the monthly rainfall data. The equations will be used in

analysis for variability of rainfall.

3. Coefficient of Variations of Monthly Rainfall Depth

Where:

CV = coefficient of variations of the monthly rainfall

Sv = standard deviation of the monthly rainfall (in millimeters)

Va = mean of the monthly rainfall (in millimeters)

Estimation of Rainfall Harvestable

The volume of water that could be harvested in Western Philippines University

main campus per month depends on the rainfall depth, runoff coefficient, and the

major factor is the roof area. The amount of rainwater harvestable in Western

Philippines University main campus can be estimated by using the equation below:

𝑅 𝑥 𝑅𝑎 𝑥 𝑅𝑐
𝑉=
1000

Where:

V = monthly volume of rainwater harvestable (in cubic meters)

R = monthly rainfall depth (in millimeters)

Ra = total roof area of Buildings of Western Philippines University (in square meters)

Rc = runoff coefficient (no unit)

Assessment for Potential Amount of Rainwater Harvestable

After finishing the processes such as: estimation of water demand,

determination of roof area for possible catchment of rainfall, rainfall analysis,

estimation of rainfall harvestable, potential amount could be assess and indicate the

volume of water that is harvestable both monthly and annually. Potential rainfall

amount harvestable can be plot versus the respective month. Also, identification for

period of highest amount for water harvestable can be done.
