COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides opportunities for students to communicate in French about personally relevant, familiar, and academic topics in reallife situations with increasing
independence. Students will exchange information, ideas, and opinions with others in guided and increasingly spontaneous spoken interactions. Students will develop their
skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing through the selective use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. They will also increase their understanding

Assessment and Evaluation:
The primary purpose of assessment is to improve student learning. Information gathered through assessment helps teachers determine students' strengths and weaknesses
in their achievement of the curriculum in each course. Assessment and evaluation are based on the provincial curriculum expectations and the assessment levels outlined in
the Ministry document Program Planning and Assessment, as well in the curriculum policy document for each discipline.
Assessment for learning (AFL)
Students will be closely observed and assessed on oral participation and their daily work in the classroom. Short diagnostic and formative quizzes, informal observations,
and discussions may be used to determine what the students know, whether the students have successfully understood the course material, and what the next steps are in
students’ learning. The instructor will provide descriptive feedback to enable the student to adjust what she is doing in order to improve.
Assessment as learning (AAL)
Through formative assessments, instructor modeling, selfassessment, and peer feedback, students will be encouraged to monitor their own progress towards achieving the
learning goals, make adjustments in their learning approaches, and set individual goals for learning.
Assessment of learning (AOL)
After each unit is completed, students will be given a minute summative unit test, assignments, or culminating task, which will assess the material covered. This will
help summarize the students’ learning and allow the instructor to determine and report on the students’ levels of achievement.
There will be a final examination in May. It will comprise an oral component and a written component testing grammar, vocabulary, text comprehension,
literature and writing. Teachers evaluate the student’s achievement levels of overall and specific expectations in the following basic categories:
Knowledge/Understanding of concepts 30%
Thinking Inquiry/organization/problem solving 15%
Communication of knowledge/concepts/procedures 25%
Application/connections of skills 30%
The final grade is determined as follows:
Term 1 and 2 Summative Assessments
70% of the grade will be based on assessments conducted throughout the course and evaluated in the four areas of academic achievement. This portion of the grade
should reflect the student’s most consistent level of achievement throughout the course, although special consideration should be given to more recent evidence of
achievement. Examples of summative assessments include listening and reading comprehension tests, oral presentations, group projects, unit written tests that include
grammar, vocabulary and compositions and essays.

Final Summative Assessments
30% of the grade is based on a final summative assessment in the form of an examination, performance and/or other method of evaluation suitable to the course content,
administered towards the end of the course and evaluated in the four areas of academic achievement. The components of the final assessment will evaluate the three
strands of oral communication (listening and speaking), reading and writing.
