Introduction

Ms Diana started the presentation and introduces her guests. Her first guest was David Cole who

was the law professor at Georgetown University. Another guest was Scott Fredricksen who was

the managing partner at Foley & Lardner and former federal prosecutor and Independent

Counsel. Her last guest was Michelle Quinn who was the Technology correspondent for Politico.

These guests will join them on telephonic conversation.

Theme

The main theme of the presentation was “Privacy Rights and Government Access to Electronic

Messages”.

Discussion

Rehm welcomes all of her guest and asked a question to Michelle Quinn that how government

searches for the electronic data. The Quinn replied that Google tell us that 8,000 U.S.

government request has been send regarding to user data. Then Rehm asked David about the

privacy act. David replies that Electronic communication Privacy Act is an issue at which

amendment is done in order to bring the data up to date with the advance technology.

David added that this law was introduced in 1986 and is designed for the purpose to protect the

stored and electronics communication same way as the personal letter is protected. David added

in it that this law is different from the previous version of the email system in many aspects.

After that again Rehm asked the question to David about the proposal that Sen.Leahy has

rejected. The proposal was that Web-based journalists were considering amendment in civil law

enforcement in order to get access to the information without the permission of judge. That’s’ is

the reason San.Leathy rejected it.

Rehm asked question to Fredericksen about the procedure of how government get the warrant.

Fredericksen answer them all the procedure of getting the warrant. After that Rehm asked

Fredericksen about the so much concern of Sen.Leahy bill of law enforcement. The Fredericksen

replies that he did not hear anything about this news. Rehm then asked Michelle about the

proposed update to the Electronic Privacy Act.

Quinn said that he did not know about the incident may be panelist know about it. Rand Paul’s

plays an argument in order to keep government out of the regulating anything online. Then Cole

said that he is not against the government completely. After Fredericksen about his point of view

of creating free internet in the United States but want to see that what government do regarding

this. On the internet many of the scammers are ready in order to do identity theft as we sign in to

check our mails.

At this point Cole also support the Fredericksen argument in order to save the people from the

scammer who always tried to snatch the identity of the people. Cole added that government

should do some necessary things in order to catch these bad boys. To catch the bad boys

government had to work hard in order to maintain the privacy of the people. Quinn also supports

the David Cole and the Scott Fredericksen opinion. After that Diana Rehm thanks to all of their

guests for their opinions and help them in increasing their knowledge.
