Mathematics in CAS Words and Music

The College of Arts and

Sciences held a spectacular event
with the theme “CAS: Words and
Music” celebrating various festivals in
the Philippines representing different
departments and featuring Sayawit
competition.
However, upon observing the
entire event I noticed some kind of
regularities in their performance and I
was immediately think that there was
an application of pattern behind the
music (lyrics of song), dance (steps)
and even on the costumes (design).
Because of the presence of patterns
it made their performance easy as
123 with a blast. There was also a
repeated visible decorative designs
adorned on the stage which indeed
pleasing in the eyes. Moreover, I’ve come to see that teachers performed first followed by Sayawit presentation
of the students in every department. And I guess this is what makes the program more meaningful and
organized because that they follow certain patterns. Since the event was spare headed by the CAS, we
perhaps wonder who are those departments performed in the stage. This question can be answered with one
of our lesson called set. Let C = set of all departments in College of Arts and Sciences. Then, in the set-builder
notation, C will be written as: C = (x I x is a department in the CAS); or in roster notation: C = (Department of
Science, Department of Psychology and Journalism, Department of Social Science and Philosophy,
Department of Mathematics and Science). The distinct departments in the CAS are what we called elements or
members. With the given set we can say, this is kind of finite set due to the fact that we can possible write
down a complete list of all the elements.
To be honest, when our teacher wanted us to make a reflection paper pertaining the said event
incorporating the subject GE MMW, I was like shocked for the reason that it would be hard and impossible
task. But when I go deeper, I find mathematics amazing because it goes with the flow and appears in the event
and hence Mathematics is indeed everywhere.
