Introduction
Connecting to AmosConnect can be divided in 2 connection types;

A) Via modem into the platform;

B) And using TCPIP via the Internet Network.

The AmosConnect platform supports modem dialup connections on analogue PSTN up to

33.6kbps and digital ISDN connections up to 64kbps. The TCPIP connection via the Internet
can transfer data up to 2048kbps. Throughput is limited by the connectivity method used on the
client side.

Phone line based connections
Because of the generic connectivity supported, AmosConnect can technically be used in
combination with any phone network and Internet connection. Among many others these
include the Inmarsat network, Iridium, Global Star, Thuraya, national land phone networks and
GSM phone networks etc.
Currently Xantic actively supports the Inmarsat, Global Star and Iridium (Rudix) networks.
This does not mean other networks cannot be used. (Contact your sales representative to
discuss options)

Access from or via non-Xantic supplied/supported networks is only possible for subscribed
users of the AmosConnect Full product version (not the Basic version).

Connection phone numbers

From Inmarsat networks the phone nr is 65#
From Iridium networks the phone nr is 6500
Via the Xantic IP networks (MPDS, Bgan, Weblink) the address tcp1.amosconnect.com.

Basically, if you can make a modem dial out or browse the Internet you can use
AmosConnect.

General concepts - PC-Terminal

Connecting a PC to a terminal can be done in 3 ways:

Connect method Be aware of:

Serial cable direct for The max length of a normal serial cable is 10 mtr. The interference
COM port to DTE port from electrical equipment along the path can influence data
throughput and quality. A cable that is too long can result in very
unpredictable faults in the real and perceived quality of data
communication. It can be fine, but it is a risk. Serial cables from
shops are normally 1,8 mtr or 3.6 mtr and should always be used
if possible. These also have better quality-moulded connectors.
Modem line with a From PC to modem, if external, you should never take a serial
separate modem cable longer them 1,8 mtr. Use the one supplied with the modem.
(possibly connected via The modem line (PSTN or ISDN) from modem to terminal should
serial cable) not exceed 30 mtr. If the cable used is longer then 10 mtr, a series
of quality tests should be done, and the vessel monitored when in
use for the first while.
USB The USB cable from PC to terminal directly should never exceed
the length of 5 mtr. A cable that is too long can result in very
unpredictable faults in the quality of data communication.

ALWAYS DOCUMENT THE PC TO TERMINAL SETUP IN VISIT REPORTS

The AmosConnect client software recognises 2 ways of using modems:
A) Direct, via the integrated AM devices. The software controls the modems directly by
addressing the COM port of the PC.
B) Indirect, via the so-called Windows TAPI devices (modems). The software requests actions
from the operating system and interacts with the operating system.

Generally, try to use AM-devices as much as possible if the modem/Terminal is attached to,
or has a (virtual) COM port number.
External modems (and therefore directly attached terminals as well) can then be configured
via AM devices. PC embedded modems, card modems (PCMCIA cards, PCI cards) and
virtual modems must be addressed via the TAPI devices.

The following dialog is displayed in AmosConnect when adding modems:

(TAPI: Windows terminology, Telephony Application Program Interface)

Inmarsat Fleet 77
The Inmarsat fleet 77 supports various connectivity methods depending on the brand of the
Fleet terminal. These include:
-The S0 ISDN bus connector for dialup circuit switched connections
-The RS232 data port for dialup (circuit switched) and MPDS connections (packet switched)
-The USB connector

With the F77 terminal you can connect to AmosConnect using dialup and MPDS in following

out properly via the attached modem. Use the ‘Dial using’ section of the dial dialog in Amos
Connect client to configure the prefix and suffix. The specific modem used might have defaults,
which are not compatible with Amos Connect. When setting up with Inmarsat-A, try to have the
modem attached use the following settings (consult modem AT manual how to set your modem
for these settings)

GSM dialup
Xantic allows limited dial in access for all of its clients via the GSM dial in numbers. This access
PSTN phone number can be used in combination with GSM phones or landlines. This way
Xantic offers the option to continue use of your mail system while in dry dock, vessels attached
to landlines when in port or to test the setup from your office where you do not have a
supported terminal. Only the licensed version of Amos Connect offers this functionality. The
Amos Connect Basic product line does not.

Amos

AmosConnect client offers many modem brands to be used in its modem list, and if not in the
list, the ‘Unlisted modem’ or ‘Hayes 2400’ are good alternatives to try. Also, there are numerous
GSM’s listed to use in combination with the TAPI modems usable in Amos Connect (TAPI
modems are modems configured in Windows instead of directly addressed by the
AmosConnect software).

Xantic keeps track of the usage per vessel/client of this access method to assure the license
agreement is not violated. The license agreement states that access to Amos Connect is only
allowed via the supported satellite networks using Xantic or Xantic-ISP Airtime.
