Lesson Plan 14 -- Learning by rote

AIM: Students will recall the melodies and lyrics of their concert music by singing, signing
and writing.

Do Now: students will try to write down the words to the song that we are singing in class.

1. Warm-Up: Students will stand up and review the Kodaly Hand Signs.
a. Go up and down the scale
i. Perform Staccato, using proper breath support
ii. Perform without consistent tempo: they must watch the conductor
1. Provide dynamics as well as tempo, if they catch on quickly
b. Use the “suicides” pattern (D, D-R-D, D-R-M-R-D)
c. Up three down 1 (D-R-M, R-M-F)
d. Skip up to each scale degree (D, D-R-D, D-M-D, D-F-D, etc.)

2. Students will go through the music for their concert:

a. Repertoire: (Students stand up)
i. The Bird With One Wing (602, 610, 606)
1. Sing the very beginning without piano accompaniment to make
sure they remember it.
2. Play piano with them as they sing after this.
3. Go up to the keychange (from d minor to D major). Teach them
the small connecting section in major.
a. If they learn this quickly, move onto the final “Ah”
section.
ii. Cold Snap (607, 609, 603)
1. Sing the beginning without piano accompaniment to make sure
they remember it.
2. Play piano with the class after they remember it.
3. Go all the way up to “Achoo/cough section”
a. If they are able to get all the way up to this section
without stopping, then teach them this section.
iii. A La Ru, A La Me (605, 608, 601)
1. Sing in sections and have students echo, without piano
accompaniment.
2. Play piano with the class when they have a decent grasp on
the shape of the melody. Go through the first two iterations of
the melody. Make sure they have a firm grasp on this section.
iv. Bring Us Peace (604, 611)
1. Sing it in sections and have students echo.
a. Try using both the English and Latin words. Teach
them the proper pronunciation.
2. Play piano with the class when they have a decent grasp on
the shape of the melody.
3. Ukulele:
a. Review C maj, F maj, A min, G maj

4. Give the students time to work on their compositions. Put the checklist on the board
(which they have already copied into their notebooks). Make sure they understand
that they must complete all the sections on this checklist to get an A.
