FAWB GUIDELINES FOR FILTER MEDIA IN BIOFILTRATION SYSTEMS

What we know...

• Treatment Area = 15m2

• Total depth of the Rain Garden
• Extended Detention
• Mulch Layer (optional)
• Filter Media Depth
• Transition Layer Depth
• Drainage Layer Depth
• Catchment contributing to the Rain Garden
• Minor catchment (ie. 5 year ARI)
• Major catchment (ie. 100 year ARI)
What we need to know...

• Layout of the Rain Garden

• Can this Rain Garden connect into the existing drainage system?
• Overflow outlet – will this be a grated pit or a kerb outlet?
Example

• 15m2 Rain Garden located in a kerb extension of a new

roundabout that is being retrofitted into an existing intersection
• Minor flows were to be designed for a 10yr ARI, not a 5yr ARI
• Don’t mind the messy hand writing!

Calculation of Design Flows
Example: Calculation of Design Flows
Design

Determine the maximum infiltration rate

Qmax = k x A x (hmax + d / d)
Where k = hydraulic conductivity
A = Bioretention media area
hmax = extended detention
d = depth of filter

Design

Size your inlet using Manning’s equation to determine your flow

width in the road and the weir equation to determine the width of
your opening (note: Manning’s will determine the depth of your flow
in your kerb, this depth is then applied as the “H” in the weir
formula
Design

Vegetation scour velocity check:

5yr check: Q5 / (Width x Ext Det) If less than 0.5m/s it is OK
100yr check: Q100 / (Width x Ext Det) If less than 1.0m/s it is OK

MUSIC model must match you design calculations

Don’t simply copy the section from the last slide as this won’t be

What I expect from your assignments...

Treat me as the approval authority

Write me a short report or letter that discusses your design and

assumptions, but also answers your assignment questions

As an approval authority, I don’t know about your development,

include a brief description of it

You must submit your assignment electronically. In the industry, we

provide our approval authorities with a pdf report or letter, the
MUSIC model and the background bitmap supporting this model
